  • Maria Kallas was Greek... Baltsa is Greek... I'm so proud to be Greek!

  • sounds interesting even i dont understand

  • She`s a perfect Carmen.

  • I am also French and I understand every word (which is not always the case with French singers). I have also seen her on stage and it's certainly the best Carmen I have ever seen.

  • she is amazing! this is an excellent performance.

  • Oh my god she is horrible. As a French speaker I can't understand most of the words she is saying. There is more to singing than just hitting the right notes!

  • @DeanAMacd I'm also French and I understand perfectly what she says. Something must be wrong with your ears.

  • Brava Agne Mpaltsa

  • it's a miracle in musical history that bizet put all his incredible talent in his few works. bravo agnes baltsa, james levin, and all the performers with metropolitan opera

  • @CorporalHicks7 for sure it is.

  • She's not terribly sexy in this role. It comes across a bit like Carmen as "drill sergeant".

This is the reason why i think YouTube is great!

  • Yes, absolutely terrific. Maria Ewing Grace Bumbry and Julia Migenes - I also like these three more than other famous Carmens - but Agnes Baltsa is ABSOLUTELY

    TERRIFIC.

  • É o êxtase, conheço quem tenha o DVD deste ópera, e ADORO.

  • where can I find this performance sub in spanish?

  • Absolutely a terrific Carmen, great voice, great acting chops, the work. Baltsa is one of my favorite Carmens along with Grace Bumbry, Maria Ewing and Julia Migenes Johnson. The Deutsche Grammophon studio recording of Carmen with Baltsa and Carreras is simply electrifying!

  • I have this version on DVD. she is one of the most passionate Carmen I've seen!

  • Carmen!!!

  • Excellent video.

  • Thats why Carmen is a role for mezzos and not for sopranos!!

  • definitly one of the best performances of Carmen I´ve heard. Love her!

  • This performance is what got me into Opera ^.^ Of course I didn't see it live but on laserdisc... but still Agnes Baltsa has an amazing voice!

  • Strong and manly Carmen. Her performance let me guess meaning of live.

  • She IS Carmen!

  • Agnes!

  • perfect french !!!

  • I dont know why but seeing people who are such talented dancers always makes me cry.... its just so beautiful to see that expression through movement!

  • Agnes Baltsa-is multiorgasmus in Carmen

  • I adore how well Balta expresses Carmen's mischievous and flirtatious personality, and on top of that she has an excellent voice!

  • Magnifique!!She has a powerful voice!

  • shes very powerful, the chesty low B and then the nice high G# at 3:38 are beautiful. Its kind of funny though, shes totallyl ike, guessing where those tambourine hits shes playing go, the one at the end is like, such an obvious mess up haha

  • MAGNIFIQUE INTERPRETATION

  • Baltsa una gran personalidad,y Carmen tambien!!! Brava!

  • she has a good voice and I really loved the interpretation, but I really dislike such exaggerated vibrato.

  • i dont think i would call it exagerated, not any more so than most operatic mezzos

  • Please - maybe you have some video or cd from her Fedora? And also Santuzza - on stage, in Vienna?

    Thank You!

    Greetigs from Russia.

  • just love love Baltsa, great performance!

  • the best.W Agnes

GENIAL

  • Pues te diré...

  • bueno decime, he escuchado carmenes y abundan las cantantes prolijas.

  • No... no me convence. Pero cada quien sus gustos.

  • Absolutamente espectacular!

  • quelle voix superbe ,un timbre si faccille à reconaitre at une technique magnifique!

    Diana.

  • My favorite part of the opera! Way to go Agnes Baltsa!

  • my favourite rendtion of this song is sung by geraldine farrar, recorded in 1912 or so. she was born in 1881 or so lol

  • VERY NICE 5 STARS ☆☆☆☆☆

  • yes she is a mezzo soprano.i heard that from my sister who have met her in france

  • rsklav i agree with u but it would be better to have her to ur side.but just forget it i now she have a lot of work.i'd like go visit her one day(if she can speak greece and haven't forget them;)

  • I wish I could sing like Agnes Baltsa. She's fantastic!

  • ripped from the DVD?

  • Wonderful singing!

    mpaltsas96,

you're damn lucky to have a grandmother like her!

  • yes it's true

  • how long now seen her on greece.when i born she wasn't there to see me.

  • if you can see my profil is mpaltsas u now she's from greece and she's my grandma

  • Is this a Bulería?

  • I wonder if Anna Netrebko will ever do Carmen?

  • Ive been wondering the same thing! She really is the best one for the role right now!!

  • She never will becoz shes a soprano while Carmen is a mezzo-soprano.

  • Your completely right, I had forgotten, Shame! she would make a wonderful Carmen.

  • Yes. It is really rare to find a beautiful woman playing Carmen, which really is irritating!

  • I jes read she was a mezzo-soprano.

    Agnes Baltasa

    Bravooooooo

  • Good voice but not enough passion.

  • My favorite Carmen by far!

  • Mine too!

  • carmen should be sexy... i saw a very very good version 1 or 2 years ago ... but i cant find it T_T

  • You...don't...think...she's...sexy. I'm stunned. You've proved it - there is no accounting for taste.

  • great, amazing ,so sexy

  • Baltsa migliore Carmen di sempre!

  • I think the way she dances isnt sensual enough for Carmen, plus she should have learnt to pronounce french better, cause you really get the feeling she doesnt understand the text perfectly

  • LonelyElle what a thing to say. Her french is wonderful you need to listen to it and you also need to listen to her spoken French. watch the opera in its entirety. She is very sensual and sexy with her French. She is Greek and if anyone understands Carmen in is Agnes Baltsa.

  • Also Herbert von Karajan said that.

  • Baltsa had the perfect voice for Carmen

  • great, amazing

  • It's amazing....wow!

  • perfect!

  • perfect!

  • Excellent - this always leaves me craving more. Baltsa is my all-time favourite mezzo; I don't think that anyone else has that 'tang' in their voice. I don't think that I'd like to see her do Carmen now, however, she has developed into the most amazing Klytamnestra in Elektra - if you like Baltsa, this is a must!!

PS - has anyone noticed one of the dancers making a faux-pas at 4:40/1? Poor thing!

  • @Otellogv i know that poor lady but she handled it very professionally! she got o the ground at the same time as the others... I could only tell after looking for it several times:-)

  • great voice

  • Great voice!!! but when speaking about performance on stage I prefer Maria Ewing´s version of Chanson Bohéme

  • Nice choreography, great opera!

    GREAT VIDEO!

  • Myra Merritt teaches at Bowling Green State University. That's where I go to school for vocal performance. She's the nicest lady EVER! She's so sweet. She doesn't sing anymore though :( She hasn't done a faculty recital since 2001.

  • It's very interesting to hear what some of these singers do now. I found another clip of her singing in L'italiana in Algeri with Marilyn Horne on here. Ironically, she is with Diane Keslng again!

  • If you guys looking for these certain opera DVD's live in the New York City area, go to the Metropolitan Opera shop located inside the Met Opera House at Lincoln Center. They have all types of operas, especially those done at Lincoln Center. Also, get this DVD of Carmen with Jose Carreras and Agnes Baltsa. She is so perfect in this part!

  • Met shop is too expensive compared to others like virgin records. Even better is buying online at Amazon. You will save a lot in price and get more.

  • However, one can steal in perfect conditions at the MET shop. There's only a couple of very old ladies selling and virtually no security.

  • Does anyone out there have a video of her O don fatal from Don Carlo at the Met? The most exciting performance of the role I'd ever seen or heard!

  • yeah..I was looking for that too... thei already had it on youtube but it was taken away due to the copyright....

  • It´s still here on youtube. Search it under "O don fatale".

I´ve found it 5 minutes ago.

  • thanks!! they must have put it back on....

  • love it post more if you can

  • who plays the frasquita and mercedes?

  • Frasquita: Myra Merritt

    Mercedes: Diane Kesling

  • LOVE it!, Love her!! =)

This was my first opera!, the one (and the singer) that made me dream about this wonderful world!

    Thanks Manon... =D*
