arguing about music is incredibly stupid. arguing on youtube about it is even stupider. if you don't like it keep your thoughts to yourself and go listen to something you like. no one cares about some strangers opinion. but hey, thats just my opinion.
Total indie shite..but also because there's great authentic quality to alex chilton its also good...so many bands just want to sound tepid and average..dullards with dull haircuts and dull girlfriends..music like this doesnt help despite their being flashes of inspiration which to be honest were more or less realized on the first time. sit down with a guitar if u play it and pick out..'on the street' there's a tune worth talkin about this ..i cant imagine wanting to put this on ..
I don't think this is a bit gay, I think that is reaction formation from straight guy.
Hey Elliot Smith was a lot more "gay" than this (as if gay is a bad think, jerks) and Paul Westerberg and the Replacements were all pretty macho. I think some people think a tender song is gay because they are not in touch with their tender emotional sides.
Elliott's music is not gay at all. First of all his music describes emotions that everyone can relate to, secondly he had many girlfriends throughout his life, including one who might very well have killed him. Yes, most of his songs are quiet and peaceful, but so what. Just because he didn't write head banging thrash metal doesn't make his music gay. There is not one song where he talks about or even suggests being intimate with a dude, and I've listened to literally all of his songs
@breeeegs OK not gay, not that I care, I told you this. You completely miss my points .. what is wrong with you? And you think everyone can relate to emotional stuff ..haha no way. Get real. You are a nice guy (really I can tell) but if you think most guys relate to this you are wrong. And NOW YOU WILL MISINTERPRET ME ONCE AGAIN AND THINK I AM ONE OF THOSE MACHO GUYS. HEY STOP IT and think before you leap into such waters. Take care buddy .. don't mean to disrespect you but don't to me..
Ok, bit gay . Bit of a shame sounds like they have/had a lot of potential but they don't have the soul or the balls to see it through. This is why acid is bad for you kids. It takes away your musical talent and replaces it with empty promises. Shame
Genius. He was pure genius. 59 years is not enough time on this planet. The fact that I never got to see him live leaves a big, aching hole in my heart. Rest in peace, Alex.
And fell through the skies": if that isn't one of the sweetest thing verbally and musically someone can think up,then what is? Memphis's lost one of its most devoted kids.
MAN WE SURE LOVE AND ALREADY MISS ALEX......I looked up cool, and right there man was The Box Top's and Big Star's front man William Alexander Chilton's picture.....rest in peace my friend......maybe we can jam on the night shift when I get up there maestro.....two hearts are better than one.....BUT hey, we won't need old dusty hearts any ol' way..........just a little bit a soul baby.
@KellyGreen5555 i'm not sure how you can message me..i just sent you a friend request, i hope that works! Trying to change my photo now to one of alex and i, and i don't even know how to do that! I'm very saddenned and a mess. I've cried every night and cannot force myself to listen to alex. him & i got close at one point and I'm just very sad...no other words really...but yeah..maybe we can chat
RIP Alex Chilton, one of the most influential artists on not only my own music, but the music of countless artists I love. I can't imagine a world without his work, nor do I want to.
No it hasn't - there've been a lot of great bands. It's no bad thing that groups like the replacements took inspiration from Big Star. It would be good for more people to spread the good word.
@RHutton2710 I am saying that much of the musical progress of the last 25 or so years is actually redundant with what Big Star did in the early 70's, and if the band had been well know at the time *this redundancy would have been seen as obvious*.
That is quite a statement to make, even about Big Star. However, I don't perceive the timeline of music to be so linear as to agree. There have been some incredibly innovative bands that sound nothing like Big Star and have nothing to do with them or their line of influence, I would consider this apparent and obvious.
If you are persistent in wanting an answer from me then fine. A timeline is not the same as time. And even if that were the case time is not linear otherwise quantum physicists wouldn't be talking about the multi-dimensional string theory and perhaps be out of a job.
But to the point, you said 'most' music? okay. I still find that erroneous since Big Star was one little cult band. They pre-emptively understood sophisticated recording and pop-structure I guess. That's big enough for me...
Well thank goodness I thought your next comment was going to quote from Isaiah and tell me there's a hot place waiting for me for mentioning science. Luckily, Big Star fans appear to be somewhat smarter and what a relief.
I wasnt a Big Star fan but they always seem to show up in the top 100 bands that influence Rock. Alex Chilton and Chris Bell both came, and lived, in my home town. Alex sang lead in a former group know as the Box Tops. He was 15 or 16 when he sang The Letter.
I really don't like Big Star that much and I love the Replacements but I am puzzled why they thought Big STar was so great. The Replacement's Alex Chilton is better than any Big Star song. Besides Sept Gurls what are their great songs? .. I mean this one is sweet and somewhat haunting . if anyone wants to recommend another Big Star song .. maybe the Live versions may not do them justice. Not trying to start a fight so please no insults are needed.
Big Star are really fantastic...the Ballad of El Goodo would be enough to cement their status if they did nothing else, Thirteen...they have lots of great songs across 4 albums but personally this song here is my favourite....simple and beautiful as the intro says
You need to experience albums by them, If you looking for easy stuff you have to get the #1 Record/Radio City double. If you like far out shtick you need to own Sister Lovers.
An incredible bannd, shame as many that they hardly reached the top they deserve recognition for until featured on That 70's show? or something. Despite being listed as one of the more important production in several list (rolling stone, mojo, etc.) I don't get the goal, sorry.
For me this sounds boring, tepid, uninspired. This music just makes me yaaawn...
