I read a little about this case. The officer who reportedly took down the "confession" of Mourthi"s was awhile later himself charged with offenses, including rape. That would imply that the officer's "good" character can be challenged and Mourthi could have been coerced into confessing. When this information came to light, everything was swept under the rug. Mourthi was sentenced and hanged. Only 2 years later, after Mourthi's death, did they charged the officer in court for his crimes.
