When Johnny Cash heard this he must have felt what we felt when we heard it. He remade it, in his own way. He didn't want recognition for it, he died shortly after. I think he just realized that someone had already wrote the words he needed to sing. It wasn't a competition, or whos was better. It was a goodbye...sang deeply and beautifully no matter who sang it. The argument about who's version is better here doesn't make sense to me. Johnny's version is about something different, but i think that's actually the mark of a good song. It can be interpreted by different people to mean different things. Now whether you think cash's version or NIN's version is better, i think credit has to be given to trent for WRITING the song. Trent came from the truth of addiction hurting the ones you love and the will to quit not always feeling like enough. Johnny's was his wife and the feeling of loss of the one he loved.
