Do you NEED a heat lamp for a turtle? Because i have a uvb lamp, basking area 30 gallon filter. so do i NEED a heat lamp. I ordered a southern painted turtle and the water is 79 degrees F.

@marioslicer8 the water temp only needs to be low to mix 70's, 79 is a bit high. The basking area should be in the high 80's. If your UVB light is also a heatlamp, then you may be ok. Test the basking area with a thermometer or infrared heat gun and see if you need more or less heat, that is the only way to know.

@JAErickson12x28 it really depends where you buy your tank and turtle and other parts from. if you get the tank and maybe some other things used, it could be cheaper. but to get it fully set up, brand new, would probably be at least $400, maybe more. You would need tank($150), lighting($40), substrate($25), rocks and other decorations($50), filter($100), basking dock($20), etc.

@theturtlelover11 all my turtles arrived healthy, but one did come(my reeves turtle) without a tail. musta been bit off by another turtle when he was just born. they gave me a full refund(well store credit) for the reeves and let me keep him - he is still doing great over a year or more later, just no tail. The other 4 turtles I got from turtlesale all arrived in good health.

you seem like you would know a lot about turtles, so if you wouldn't mind responding a have a question. i'm thinking of getting two southern painted turtles as hatchlings. so i will be keeping them together, and i'm thinking if they're together as hatchlings, they wont have very many problems. do you think they would fight? i'm not totally set on southern, so which painted would you recommend? you said you ordered males. is that only on turtle sale, because i've heard they're not too great.

@icee67 you can purchase turtles from many places. I got males because males stay smaller. Two painted turtles should be fine together, especially if put together at a young age. Any of the painted turtles are good, just pick the one you like :) I like the southern cus of the stripe.

@faraaz1985 yes, of course you need a tank, with proper heating and UVB lighting. And remember, for turtles you should have 10gallons of tank per inch of turtle shell. So as your turtle grows, lets say it gets 10inches long, it will need a 100gallon tank.
