I have no idea why I'm watching this again. It always makes me tear up a bit. When I was a little kid, my first sports games were the Tigers here and the Wings. We need jobs in the D so we can pay to keep historical structures around and looking nice.
If Alcatraz were in MI, I'd bet $50 it would have been demolished by now.
I never got to visit this ballpark but my roomie did the in September of 1999. He knew that I loved baseball and its history so much that he grabbed a bag of dirt for me.
I watched as my boyhood home of the Texas Rangers went down. It was really tough. Especially since it was done primarily during the strike of 1994.
I can't even begin to think what Tigers fans went through watching this place being robbed from them.
(I live there) They don't know about Historical Significance. All they want is to make a new building out of that same plot of land, like a casino. Next stop (I bet) Is the Michigan Central Station. Seriously, they don't know how important this building is, and the MCS. Now, robbers stripped the whole thing down. I would of said then, That they should of preserved it as a museum. If they knock that building down, I am going to burst my bubble.
gussie8933......if you feel so strongly about saving historic landmarks from the wrecking ball I say to you ,like I say to all other historic preservation nuts, pull out your checkbook and buy it or pay to restore it. You HP nuts always complain and cry when something gets torn down but never want to find the money (the vast and incredible amounts of money) to save the buildings and you always think the public via the government should pay for the restoration. In two words: you're crazy.
I was at the Tigers World Series in 68...I was 15 at the time. Detroit has been thrown away...but I still have my memories of the glory days. I feel badly for the younger Detroiters that will never know just how nice it really was. Fishing all night on Belle Isle (and I'm female and no one would bother you) gosh that was great. I left the state in 91 because of how bad my area was...
im a die hard cubs fan but this is just sad to see this good old stadium i mean this should landmark of not only the city of detroit but of the state of michigan and if this happened to wrigley i would get rely emotional cuz in 2009 wrigley and fenway will be the only two classic ballparks left
i feel sorry for u tiger fans to see this happen this place should been turned into a museum or place where kids can go in and play but with security measures
u know wants rlly gonna be sad, is when they demolish yankee stadium...i never get too emotional.....but that day i along with many other indeed will...

I took sand from a playground and put in a ziplock bag and sold it on e-bay for $35.
Some schmuck thought he was getting dirt from the pitcher's mound.
LOL

I think that was the light tower Reggie Jackson hit in the 1972 All Star game.

Actually, he hit the one that stood next to it, the one in right-center field.

Who ever is responsible of making the decision to knock this landmark down should be prosecuted!
