  • BRAVOOO

  • this is so delightful to listen too, excellent.

  • Superb performance! Absolutely delightful! One of many very great singers!

I pity those who are so preoccupied with the technicalities of music that they have totally lost the whole aim and purpose of music. Proud of being offended by the most minute of supposed errors, often just legitimate differences in interpretation, they come to hate most beautiful music, instead of delighting in the exquisite, and (horror) overlooking and forgetting tiny divergences from their preconceived expectations!

  • Herbert von Karajan was amazing! Best orchestra conductor!

  • I want that surname so bad.

  • Whenever I feel a bit low, I listen to Katleen and her magic works on me...:) What a magnificent performance...:)

  • Love her voice, it's so beautiful :)

  • 29 people don't appreciate opera.

  • AMAZINGLY EFFORTLESS!!!!!

  • Love . IT !

  • She was one of the incredible voices in opera.

  • I've always loved her free and beautiful vibrato...*sighs* she has such a light childish sound that I love..so beautiful and such great head voice top notes...she's my favorite next to Maria Callas who has a much deeper and fuller timbre

  • so beautiful. BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!1

  • Ich liebe die Frūlingsstimmen so viel! What a performance...and von Karajan...may he rest in musical peace.

  • Still one of the greatest American coloraturas! Bravissima Ms Battle!

  • Ms. Battle has a lovely, lilting voice so perfectly suited to express the lightness, joy, and beauty of this music in a way that stronger, perhaps "greater" voices cannot do.

  • 8 minuti e 49 secondi di delizia !

  • Amazing.

  • Her voice reminds me a bit of Diana Damraus, just a little.

  • @sweetpepper36 I agree, I can hear that full yet focused and supported sound of Damrau in Battle's voice. Good observation.

  • Perfeito, também não tinha como ser diferente com Kathkeen como solista e Karajan conduzindo simplesmente Perfeito!

  • I have an American girl friend, a singer, who worked with her decades ago. She behaved so badly that at the end, the whole company had tee-shirts printed with "WE SURVIVED THE BATTLE". This being said, she is/was a wonderful singer.

  • Great!

  • crystalline, effervescent, thrilling, and, above all, enormously entertaining!!! i have watched this video sporadically for about 3 years now and am always delighted!!!!!

  • esta era la que cantaba en los tres chiflados:)

this was the singing in the Three Stooges:)

  • what i wouldn't give to have such a voice...

  • The best Voices of Spring ever sung and Kathleen is so beautiful.

  • nummer eins sie ist perfect danke frauline battle

  • I love this conductor.

  • @ohsnapitsme59 Um, yeah. "This conductor" is Herbert von Karajan, one of the most profoundly brilliant musical presences of the 20th c. GENIUS : )

  • @disneylandman66 He's great but you can have a little sense of humour, too: 6:06

  • A mi parecer mucho mejor que la interpretación de Dessay, y no necesita de altísimos agudos!!

  • This is beautiful. The conductor cracks me up with his epicness, and the orchestra sounds amazing. Whoever filmed it did a terrific job. Miss Battle looks and sounds beautiful as always, and her diction is so clear! Thank you for sharing this beautiful performance by all parties involved in it's production.

  • I agree with The Soulflower. I come to this site to listen to the fine music and I to can not tolerate the pompous crap posted by the idiots with minimal interlect.

  • Lovely. Thank you for sharing.

  • I have been looking for this song forever. I haven't heard it since I was a child and I heard it in a cartoon at that. I think it was Bugs Bunny. They often used classical music in cartoons. Anyway it stayed in my mind, What a joy to hear it as an adult by one of my favorite opera singers. It's perfect for Ms. Battle.

  • A pesar de que el final no es la nota alta que todo mundo espera es geniál, tal sutilidad lo hace increíble!

  • What a beautiful voice! I absolutely love her in Abduction of Seraglio and Cosi fan Tutte! absolutely amazing!!!!!

  • Adorable. Just lovely.

  • her voice is so clean and crisp. 6:43-6:45! I LOVE HER FACIAL EXPRESSION! it is like she's saying, 'what now? i know i am the best.' ^_^

  • Bravo, Diva Kathleen Battle! Every word you sing, comes to us characterized by emotive experience. It's as though notes were countless lifetimes you've lived.

And yet, your beauty stands still, timeless, without the reflected hint of hearts wounds. Thanks for sharing your gift with the world.

  • Fantastic and absolutely beautiful voice. I always enjoy her lovely voice. Bravo.

  • Jesus Christ there some pretentious pricks when it comes to opera.

All self proclaimed experts analysing every fucking note and expression the singers makes.Music is for enjoying not dissecting. All I see is an incredible singer singing a beautiful song.

  • @Q3ToPBuZz I agree. Although I understand everyone is free to say whatever, I sometimes wish those people would just stfu and let the rest of us just enjoy!

  • @Q3ToPBuZz i totally agree lol but sometimes people need to criticize others who are OBVIOUSLY successful, just to make themselves feel better. every singer is flawed, even kathleen battle. the business is hard and competitive to get into anyway so people are just jealous lol

  • @Q3ToPBuZz i totally agree!!!!!!!! thank you for this comment!

  • Fond memories. What a concert that was!

  • I don't like opera usually but Kathleen sings this so beautiful "Frühlingsstimmen" even more beautiful! And she looks so great in this performance!!! And by the way, it couldn't be sung more perfectly...

  • She still manages to keep a quality of girlishness in her voice even after years of vocal refinement and strengthening. Beautiful.

  • Exquisite. That's beautiful.

  • Is this where she should sing "don't hate me because I'm beautiful"? Its amazing that people are criticising such talent for superficial reasons. Ms. Battle is a delight.

  • Every time Kathleen Battle sings, she trumps everyone who puts her down. In fact, she has turned the whole MET experience into gold. Spared the demands of opera and the negative energy of racists and bigots, her voice and artistic integrity have survived totally intact. There is nothing they can do to take this woman's gift.

  • Had Kathleen Battle nurtured her talent in Europe, as Jessye Norman did, she would not have suffered the American experience. Of course there is always two sides to every issue, but my experience is that because of ingrained racism, members of the white establishment tend to devalue our expertise. Thus, Kathleen Battle's insistence on artistic control would have been seen as difficulty, whereas from someone white it would have been accepted as a result of the artistic temperament.

  • @vaughanhyman Thank You!! Jessye was Smart and went to Europe First! she did not deal with the American opera scene until she was well established. Kathleen should have done the same thing.

  • @vaughanhyman You are ridiculous. Price, Bumbry, Norman, Verrett, Grist, Arroyo and more managed to deal with the racism of American opera without screaming at people, smacking people across the face, causing their colleagues to cry. I dated a guy who worked for the Chicago Symphony in the 1990s and she came for a concert and the entire place was on pins and needles for the entire week of rehearsals. The woman is *crazy*

  • @FoggyRoad81 everyone deals differently with pain...you've obviously never felt the pangs of discrimination.

  • @normallawrence

Discrimination is no reason to make the lives of everyone around you a living hell. I've seen your previous comments, and they all have to do with racial issues. You're using the race card to pardon the fact that this simply was not a nice woman.

  • @vivsters96 I simply said "@FoggyRoad81 everyone deals differently with pain...you've obviously never felt the pangs of discrimination." to this particular viewer. Subsequently when I see negatives comments that I feel unwarranted against any artist i will make my assessment of that particular comment if I happen to disagree with it. You say that I have made previous comments having to do with racial issues. Where and what artist I ask you? Imho she is a delight. Who amongst us is blameless?

  • Exquisite singing! Thanks for sharing :)!

  • Look on her face at 6:22 is absolutely precious.

  • AMAZING! How on this earth can someone DISlike this???

  • @AnoMundi How on this earth can somebody sing like this? Thats just supernatural...

  • spring is here!!!!!

  • The 27 dislikes came from the coca cola kids--Those people whose palate is so coarse, that they are compelled to add sugar to a rare champagne. It's also an indictment of the dumbing down effect of popular American culture. And, it is a terrible shame that some of them are so coarse that they can't appreciate an extraordinarily sublime offering.

  • Pure perfection. NOBODY has ever performed this better! This is a gift and training that happens once in a 1000 years. Thanks for posting.

  • My God the beauty didn't stop at her looks. Her voice is simply angelic!

  • Absolutely STUNNING! Ms Battle is such an incomparable singer it doesn't matter what the naysayers have to say about her. I love her singing and she just does her thing regardless. Those who write such callous remarks can't sing anyway. Bravo Diva Battle!

  • I wonder where the 26 dislikes came from!!!

  • I still just CANNOT stop listening to this marvelous achievement of supreme music...

  • The single most perfect performance evaaaaaaaaaa! :)

  • Kathleen Battle was so beautiful at that age. Von Karajan was also so beloved because he helped so many young singers of German music, regardless of race, color or religion. He was a great man.

  • This woman ranks among the very best . Who is criticizing her? Beautiful.. Tunnelhack "Same difference to you" or "makes no difference to you"?

    ????

    Sincerely,

    Robert H. Galloway

  • Es ist mir ganz egal.

  • I like how he refused the flowers at the end.

None of that crap at his age!

  • Thanks for this very rare scene. Kathleen was so young and beautiful. What a pro.

  • Ms. Battle's incredible--her voice is like a bird in flight--I think her tessitura is higher and lighter than even Ms. Dessay. Can we say bird seed?? The MET did a great disservice to opera lovers in firing her. They should have taken her back after a few years of 'probation'---jerks!!

  • @windstorm1000 i agree completely wih everything you wrote! dessay's voice can be light-lyric but her color is not indicative of that categorization! and omg if only battle could've done more operas!!!!!!!!

  • OMG, I just can't stop listen to what I consider the best rendition of this wonderful piece...Cathleen you rock this BAD...:)

  • I agree with TheSoulflower regarding the ad hominem attacks on Kathleen Battle. She is a prima donna and all is well with the cream of the crop. Just appreciate her.

  • interessante la musica di Strauss

  • voice fr the sky

  • WONDERFUL PERFORMANCE! Indeed, this is one of the most beautiful voices I ever listened to and, for sure, one of the best performers I ever watched to. Although my small understanding of German did not enable me to follow completely the lyrics on time, I noticed that she was "living" the music and its lyrics. Wonderful in all senses! Conductor H. V. Karayan - during and after the performance - by his expression , seems to agree with me...

  • what a voice, Spring itse;lf so heavenly and with Karajan condacting! Thank you for the pleasure and for sharing it

  • I think she has one of the most beautiful voices ive ever heard.... but i must say just to address some of the people who posted... she is very hard to work with and most people didnt want to work with her...I've witnessed it first hand ...It does not take away from her talent.. I would of loved to see her do Lucia or Ammina..... I love her Ah non giunge

  • What an amazing vocalist!! Beautiful, elegant....simply heavenly.

  • What an amazing vocalist!! Simply heavenly.

  • this is nirvana for the conductor and for me ! if only i had been at that performance. i saw her in london in the gods (cheap seats) at the royal opera house. i long to see kathleen battle again.

some humans should keep their malevolent opinions at home, and not air them for public consumption. our lives are short and wished to enjoy moments of pleasure. keep your venom at home please.

  • I don't get why no one likes her.. She has such a beautiful voice it's heartbreaking..

I'm an aspiring opera singer and I'm constantly looking for muses.. She is #1 on my list. Thank you so much for putting this up!!!

  • I'm always amazed by opera singers' fluency in several languages. I know only a few dribs and drabs of French, Spanish and German; even less Italian. Where, when and how do they learn it?!

  • According to Wikipedia, she was born in 1948 - in Ohio.

  • She's marvelous! What a gift!

  • she sing like a snow on the sky and melt to crystal water before it dorp to the earth.

  • When listening to her I forgot that they don't wear microphones... Imagine living next to an opera singer. Haha.

  • Her voice is like flowing silver

  • terrific !

  • Thank you for replying!!

  • Just gorgeous! What a crystal voice!

  • I wonder why and how anyone can tell she has got an attitude?? I don't see it. I only see an self assured women who has got a passion.. :)

And I feel like a cry baby when listening to this.

  • Divine, pure as crystal ,amazing Diva !I love her!

  • perfect. Everything sounds so natural.

  • HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    OMG

I DIDNT BELIEVE IT BUT DAMN

HOW CAN U PPL NOT NOTICE 1:21?

    SHE SAYS

    SWEET BACKSIDE

    HAHAHAHA

  • @keylovesrosie i caught it. she does say "sweet backside". lol

  • @keylovesrosie she does say it. That's crazy. hahahaa

  • @keylovesrosie I wish it were true, but in fact she's singing "zu End, mag sein."

  • @keylovesrosie

2:42!! There, she's said it again, hahahaha!

  • @keylovesrosie

I don't believe it! Yet again at 7:15!! Great!

  • @sepiapanorama hahahahahhahahaha i know dude

  • @keylovesrosie haha words in one language sound like different words in another language

  • La Superba Kathleen! Karajan was indeed very fond of her, and had invited her to perform in Vienna.

  • @siriusminx - Totally agree. When we hear the various performances they collaborated in, we see why they were fond of each other -- both used each other to elevate music to its utmost!

  • Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Phil. at the 1987's New Year Concert in Vienna

  • Herbert von Karajan and the Vienna Phil. at the 1987's New Year Concert in Vienna

  • Beautiful voice and I do like Johann Strauss music. It's not often you hear this song with singing. Usually it is instrumental.

Schöne Stimme, und ich weiß, wie Johann Strauss Musik. Es kommt nicht oft hören Sie diesen Song mit Gesang. Normalerweise ist es instrumental.

  • Beautiful woman, beautiful voice.

  • Wonderful singer...a real Diva!

  • A very beautiful woman indeed. And her singing only reflects her looks. As for the conductor, I love the enthusiasm that he has from the moment she walks out. :D

  • what a voice <3

  • I love Karajan's epic conducting style lol :-)

  • Absolutely amazing. She has the voice of an angel. Beautiful lady and such a lovely voice.

  • Marvellous! This voice is wonderful!

  • 1987 Vienna

  • I come to this site to listen/view various singers and this woman is the only one that others seem to target for ad hominem attacks. I wish that you would all stop making up ridiculous criticisms on her singing or emotions and INSTEAD just say "I PERSONALLY HATE HER". It would be better than the childishness that you post.

  • @TheSoulflower Well said TheSoulflower. Could not agree with you more. As though the ones who leave their childish comments can do any better. As thought their two years in college gives them the right to make such silly judgements because they are majoring in voice. Very sad and deluded people they are.

  • @TheSoulflower for real

  • @TheSoulflower I haven't heard too many negative comments about this young lady. How could anyone hate her. She is a nice little girl, sings beautifully. As others hav mentioned, Karajan seems to b in love with her voice, and believe me, he has heard them all - like the greats - eg, Erna Berger and Erna Sack. All these ladies have great voices. Why not just enjoy them!

  • @TheSoulflower THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING IT!

other singers (Callas, Netrebeko, and Ghergiou seem to inadvertently and through no fault of their own inspire such hate... its ridiculous! The woman is a singer... she sings songs! What has she done to any of them personally?

  • @TheSoulflower if people said they hate her on the video, people would bombard them still with, 'if you hate her stop watching the videos!' or 'if you don't give no reasons for your hate, you're just jealous' .. it's best to keep it to yourself if you hate a perfect performance xD

  • Girl that is a good perm! lmao! Beautiful voice!

  • I first heard Kathleen on the radio, in I believe 1978 or '79, and she stopped dead in my tracks. She had a beautiful natural placement, and knew how to make the most of her limited breath-capacity. She certainly had one of the loveliest sounds of the lyric stage, her personal antics were an unfortunate distraction and didn't serve her.

  • lolz@3:19

  • I do admit that this is a glorious interpretation but I really love Battle & Zubin Mehta's rendition its faster and the runs come off as more exciting. She was wearing a pink gown and that video used to be on youtube but its gone now. Does anyone know where I can get the video or atleast a copy of the performance.

  • dessay's atrocious rendition doesn't hold a candle to the sublimity of this performance!!!!

  • As someone who experiences the ugliness of racism, bigotry and stupidity everyday, not least, in an Educational institution, I must say that Kathleen Battle's account of her experience, overcoming the odds and achieving the pinnacle of success in the world of opera, must be very interesting indeed. Her continued accomplishments are most extraordinary--proving the enduring & heavenly beauty of her work. Battle is infinitely better than the idiots who can't stand the fact that she is the best!

  • The most gratifying thing is that Kathleen Battle is and will remain one of the few very best vocalists of all times. It matters not what type or shade of disguised bigotry, stupidity, ignorance or accolade, for that matter, that is directed at her. Unless one is really stupid and or bigoted, one can't help but be elevated by the glorious beauty, integrity, and mastery of her art.

  • Absolutely delightful! A truly sublime performance! Stunning!!!

  • I wish she had been as good as she thought she was.

  • She is very very good, but not the very best at this sort of thing. Galli-Curci remains the yardstick by which all subsequent coloraturas were measured. Battle is not quite there in beauty of tone nor in her technique. Mady Mesple brought a vibrancy, and a more beautiful tone to this kind of stuff. Also, Mesple's attack is far far better than Battle's. That said, this lady still delivered the goods.

  • @meinfb i'm sure there is someone out there who has a differing opinion concerning the performers you mentioned...gosh!! humans can be so judgemental!!

  • i'm in love with this song and the singer =D

  • I still love The Three Stooges version best!

  • I love the look on her face while she sings this, like she knows she is bad ass.

    I love this!

  • LINDO

  • Con este gran director el mejor del siglo.. despues de Toscanini...Kathleen ya puede morir tranquila de haber sido dirigida, por este genio, El no dirigia a ninguna cantante pero fue encandilado por la voz de angel de la Battle.

  • What a beautiful performance. Yes, she was a "bad girl" who was (in)famous for her primadonna behavior, but as I am a simple opera fan and didn't work with her, the one thing I'll always remember about her is the joy she gave me when I heard her as Rosina at the Met... In reality, if we only listen to "nice people", our choices would be very limited especially as many famous composers weren't exactly nice. She was a great artist and whatever happened is in the past.

  • great performance who is this jessye norman

  • i love the chest control

  • What a wonderful performance, and one can see von Karajan enjoyed it as well. He was such a singer's conductor!

  • How very lovely this is.

  • This is absolutely the most beautiful soprano.. none can touch her. Someone mentioned Natalie Dessay who I enjoy and I have all of her recordings but she can't touch Battle--- Dessay sings a choppy rendition of this piece and doesn't have the smooth velvet lines and phrases that Battle has. God bless Kathleen Battle ....

  • Gorgeous!!! Effortlessly executed as usual.

  • traumhafte Stimme!!

  • traumhafte Stimme!!

  • beautiful tone and diction. I much prefer Natalie Dessay's version partially because she actually hits the A flat in the end. I thought this performance was above average but anti-climatic

  • the most beautiful voice in the world!

  • FANTASTICO :)

  • If her singing is what the music in heaven is like, I better stop sinning so that I can go. :) Beautiful!

  • il grande e mitico VON KARAJAN.

  • Lord, how I miss this voice. Whether or not she was a holy terror, she definitely had the pipes to pull off the "divatude"...

  • Yes - T-shirts were made " I survived the Battle"....That is an old one - although we are yet to see one these supposed t-shirts. 20 Years old bullshit nonsense! I want facts!!!!!

  • dude amazing!!! she is so gooddddd, wish i could sing like that

  • Maestro K cracks me up. You can tell he really enjoys working with her. You should see him conduct while she sings the 5th movement of the Brahms Requiem. It's as if no other voice in the world exists but hers.

  • Splendid. You can always count on Miss Battle to deliver outstanding vocals.

  • The best of all time!

  • The best of all time!

  • Bravo! Vielen Dank!

  • While you may not like a comment such as the one goldenthroat86 made that does not mean it is right to mark it as spam. Free speech is not a freedom everyone is given and should be shown not hidden away no matter how strongly you disagree.

  • @greeneyedgirl292 whatever!!!

  • @greeneyedgirl292 , I agree. I can also believe that what goldenthroat85 says is true. I'm sure the Met gave Battle every chance to behave herself, and for some reason she couldn't. She has a very beautiful and well trained voice, but there comes a time when an opera company has to think of the other people who work with someone who is impossible wo work with.

  • Spectacular!

  • Some people just have it. She is one of them.

  • Wonderful. And then with maestro von Karajan! Has she retired?

  • This is my cousin (: i can remember when i was six and she would take me and my sister and cousins on walks with her (: i haven't seen her in years.

  • this is wonderful
