I remember hearing this song in Preschool, and thinking that this was what it meant to be an adult: Smoke cigarettes and catching the train to work! I swear as I listen to this song, I can smell the cigarette smoke, feel the cold morning air as he rushes to the station, see the train pulling into the platform with a hiss and a guy feeling totally alone in a crowded carriage as the train jolts out of the platform.
You know I first heard paul kelly about 11 years ago after been left by a girl I had moved to aus to live with. Soft pom I know. Anyway after that I started drinking in the victory in Brisbane and watching most weeks a guy playing elec acoustic and singing paul kelly. God he was good. Anyhow after that bought a lot of paul kelly and learnt by heart to her door etc, but you know I have never heard this cracking song before. How the heck do I not remember this one. Got me back listening.
Possibly my favourite PK song. Always loved how there are only two words in the chorus, but it still captures that horrible jolt that comes when your conscious mind finally confronts the fact that everything has turned to sh*t.
