  • Does anyone know any good scales to use for this kind of music. Like alot of Indian music uses Raga scales etc?

  • @warprod Why not try minor and major scales?

  • It's a pity that there aren't any drones in E or A in a regular set. Would be even more haunting

  • anyone have suggestions for similar sounding songs? just found out bout this, and i love it but i wanna find more. any suggestions would be appreciated, thank :D

  • It's easy to 'dislike' but sitting on yer arse playing video games is not a skill on the same level. It takes about seven years to be able to play anything decent on the uilleann pipes.

  • Crackin' brilliant! Get talking to any UP player, watch closely, the UP's are VERY DIFFICULT to play, and extremely difficult to play well. Serious talent here!

  • Stumbled :D

  • I need to find more music like this... this is great!

  • Fantastic!!

  • Dear nine dislikers,

    WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU? OwO

  • Thank you StumbleUpon, this is in fact relevant to my interests.

  • I came. HARD.

  • what instruments are those?

  • @Rose94Jess

    Bouzouki and Uilleann Pipe

  • 9 people have no taste, this is brilliant!

  • That's the tune at 4:03, sounds familiar to me

  • Kerr handed.. The good old Scottish gene carried over to ulster. Thanks for sharing this video of a great piper

  • where can I buy these tracks?

Checked on barry's website, but can't find the cd :(

  • whats these tunes called?

  • @ElAbortionist

The reels are "The Stranger at the Gate" and "The Rathlin Island (Fling)" aka "Peter Brown's Reel".

The Jigs are "The Collier’s Jig" aka "Do You Want Any More?" and "Seamus O'Shanahan's Jig".

  • @differous01 ah thanks bud! this stuff lights a fire in my belly

  • a left-handed piper lol.

  • @carthyphobe but an awesome one!

  • @caedef indeed man

    folk yeah!!!

  • I like ice-cream.

  • i see theres 9 dislikes........................what sad sad people that cant see or hear the music for what it is

  • @acass04 - I'd be willing to bet that none of those who disliked this have any proficiency at piping or understanding of this skill it takes to play at this level. Those who can, do. Those who cannot, criticize others on YouTube! This is a very well done set!

  • @milpiper true

  • I feel like hitting Da Liquor Store!!! In Oakland, California ya'll

  • man i love his style!!!

  • probably the best uilleann pipes vid on youtube! barry my kerr on the lone prairie!

  • Just all class all the time, Barry. Not only your music, but your paintings as well. Will I ever see a Keith Harkin (old soul) one by you? So proud that I had opportunity to hear and watch you as you played with Celtic Thunder tours here in USA. Will miss you on this tour.

  • oh man!! I love this music!

  • 9 people wouldn't know good music if it slapped them in the face

  • @jrbong13 well that's like....your opinion....man

  • does anyone know if barry does session work?

  • @TomRAFC yes he does do session work, give him a shout on myspace or facebook

  • thats some of best piping i have heard in a long time

    its just so smooth

  • Greet Job

  • This is MUSIC! Awesome!

  • I spoke to this gent about coming and performing at a party here in the states, and he said that airfare, hotel and $2,000 would not be enough.. Ok, he is great, excellent in fact, and Uilleann pipes certainly are more difficult to master and harder t find than Highland pipes, but come on... I might have gone to $3,000 but no more, I mean he's a piper, I do it for $50.00 and free soda! :) I am being somewhat humorous, but serious as well.

  • @apologeticsman

i did not take your offer seriously .....and after watching a few of your videos i most certainly will not be taking you seriously in the future.Thank you

  • not sure which offer you aren't taking seriously, and as far as any videos I make, I am always serious when speaking about God. If you think your religious opinions or knowledge is superior to mine, so be it, but there is no reason to be rude. I did inquire about Mr. Kerr's prices for coming to a company party & playing, and accidentally made an offer for more than intended, but that was a simple typo. It's ok anyway, there are thousands of Uilleann players I could hire, so no worries

  • Awesome! I realy admire irish music.

    Greeting from Croatia

  • This is AMAZING!!! Who are you guys?! I adore Irish music and this is so great!

  • some fine playing boys, really stirrs and old feller of my self.

  • even though this whole video rocks, just wanna note Andreas Rogge has that back D sound down to a science...

  • @Lochbesda16 if you think the back D is a bit of a bugger, spare a thought for the old pastoral pipe C# makers (the ancestor of these Union pipes) and they had to move the back D up the chanter 1 inch. Some people think thats why the chanter was cut from C# to a D. Better dynamics, changes in musical styles from the baroque, resting the chanter on the knee. Masterful makers like kenna (Dublin), Robertson (Edinburgh) and Reid of (newcastle-upon-tyne) developed and improved these pipes.

  • people think that playing pipes fast is some strange and quasi divine talent that only a few possess, but actually the vast majority of pipers have to spend hours upon hours painstakingly learning each note, and repeating the single notes slowly before speed is achieved. I bet this guy took 7-10 years to be able to master his speed and accuracy

  • fuckin amazing!!!

  • The first tune's The Stranger at the Gate

  • the best ive ever heard..true genius

  • What is the name of the song they open with?

  • One of the best piece of Ireland here on Youtube in my opinion.

Thank you for that brilliant duet.

  • the width between what soemone actually says and what people read or hear is astounding. If said Irish bagpipers are great, and BTW, my dog loves them too, you guys would say "Oh, yer calling the Irish dogs!!?? Try reading what a person says rather than what you want them to say... :( grr..

  • I agree, there's far too much aggression here on youtube.

  • BRILL

  • Those are some wicked pipes man.

  • I LOVE BEEN IRISH

  • not bad!;-}

  • not cheap at all mate.....solid silver ,boxwood and ivory,Andreas Rogge

  • Cocuswood??? Sorry mate, but that's boxwood without a doubt. Looks absolutely nothing like cocus. It's a rockin set.

  • I never said it was, I merely said it LOOKED like a cheap wood set of pipes I bought from lark In The Morning.

  • I LOVE this! What amazing performances! :)

  • Barry you are great!

  • nice job

  • All pipers have my respect, all pipers Irish and our brother folk the Scottish.

  • don´t forget the galician pipers, we´re celtic musicians too

  • The bouzouki is fine...but I definitely prefer the accompaniment on the jigs than the reels. I can't stand when chords are strummed out like that on a 'zouk - Alec Finn's approach to the instrument (counter-melodies) sounds a lot better to my ears.

  • Amazing. I love it.

  • Comment removed

  • Amazingly performed! I wish I could play as well as that!

  • EXCELENTE! 5*

  • The reels are indeed "Stranger at the Gate" and "Rathlin Island."

The first jig is "The Collier's Jig" (same melody as "The Collier's Reel"), but I have no idea what the name of the last tune is.

  • The last tune is "Seamus O'Shanahan's Jig"

Altan play it in Harvest Storm :D

    Saludos!

  • Very very very good good good!

  • Well played Baza.... beautiful music.... Lewis.

  • No os equivoqueis, el buenu es el del bouzouki.

  • I am positive that the first tune is Stranger at the Gate, and I'm pretty sure the second is Rathlin Island. Can anyone identify the rest of the tunes in the video? That would be great.

  • the first tune is stranger at the gate....i am not sure what the second is.The jigs are colliers and paul o shaughnessys

  • personally i prefer the uilleann pipes more than the highland pipes this is great stuff

  • All three my uncles are grade 1 highland pipers some of the best yet i too prefer the Uilleann. Im from Scotland as well I love them both though.

  • Thank for posting this

    Ian North Wales

  • What's the tune at 3'50?

  • bucks of oranmore isnt in this clip at all

  • you guys are phenomenal musicians.thanks a lot for posting this here !

  • The tune that starts at about 1:21 is a reel called the bucks of oranmore, with a lot of brilliant ornamentation. Then there's a slow air and I "think" the jig called the high part of the road at about 2:50 and on to????? Some body please tell me if I'm wrong. sorry dont' know the first one.

  • i'm not sure if that is bucks of oranmore, it sure doesn't sound like it. idk about the jig though but i've heard it before.

  • incredible guys

  • No... I'm sorry, I take that back. I would LOVE to know the names of ALL tunes played here on this video! Any help in identifying them would be greatly appreciated!:-)

  • Yes... I would also like to know the names of the two tunes in the first set....

  • briliant!

  • Absolutely awesome! Great job guys! I love the Uilleann pipes. Thanks.

  • QUE-BIEN-QUE-TOCA!!! Solo en mayusculas se puede escribir, jeje! Que placer...

  • Does anyone know the name of the first song they are playing?

  • mann o mann wie geil ist das denn...

  • kudos to anyone who can play uillean

  • im feeling like drinkin a guiness

  • D una vez a mis favoritos! bravo!

  • bueniiiiiiiiiiiiisiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimooooooooo, un saludo fuerti de trakafilms

  • Absolutely amazing piper. His note transitions are so clean. Definitely 5 star piping.

  • The pastoral pipe (basically an Uilleann pipe with a low C#) developed in the 18th century in Scotland, England and Ireland all can claim a playing tradition. Although its only in Ireland where the instrument survived to the present day. Union pipe influenced the folk tradition of the 18th and 19th century in Scotland and Ireland. The instruments name was changed in the early 20th century to the Uilleann pipes.

    look up

    pastoral pipes on wikipedia.

  • The second tune is "I Buried My Wife and Danced on Top of Her" (or "The Choice Wife"). The last jig is, I think, (help please) "The Old Wife on the Hay-Mow".

  • whats the name of the song?

  • Excellent! They play so well, and the guy with the pipes looks like Curly Howard, too!

  • Makes me wanna get up and dance! lol. I LOVE this!

  • simply amazing

  • this makes me extremely proud to be irish!! :)

  • Now that's what I call a piper

  • Now that's what I call a HELL of a piper!!!

  • I couldn't agree more!

  • Does anyone know the name of the first part of this song? I think it is called "pigeon on the gate" but I am not sure.

  • beautiful MUSIC well done (A1)

  • Does anyone know what the first tune in the second set is? It seems to follow the same structure as Garret Barry's jig.

  • These guys are good. does anyone know if they have a cd available?

  • Comme je le disais sur Liveirlande et c'est la que j'ai decouvert ces deux buys trop genial on danse un jour avec vous en France ....vive l'Irlande

  • Ram and Drive it.

  • the emotions that comes from this piper helps me to discover the true meaning of live, perhaps he doesn´t know it,but his soul speaks throught his fingers. This energy is amazing!!!Thanks

  • was that an intelligent comment...

  • I think that was the point...

  • always better than being you

  • great, simply great.

i need such a pipe too! my middleage pipe is nothing against this!

  • savage

  • guau, buen video manolo

  • Anyone know the names of these tunes?

  • they also need to have a myspace!

  • I play pipes. I have sifted through loads of pipe recordings and I am saying your first tune on this set is the best I've heard. Love the way it bounces around with the basouki. I would like to learn it whats it called.........

  • This is perfect in my mind! It's like finding Planxty all over again.

  • Love the music. I'm thinking of taking up the uilleann pipes myself, but I really don't know where to start. Anyone else who plays, how did you start? Also, any recommendations for a good starter set for a beginner, preferably under $1000?

  • i started on the tin whistle for about two years and then i started on the uilleann pipes. you would not get a good set for under a $1000 there is sets for $800 but they are the worst you can get for a good set you would have to spend about $2000

  • most excellent music I am happy knowing the next generation have taken it on board, so here to the music and the people making it

    mick

  • not a guitar------a bazookie (sp?)

    they are truley amazing

  • bouzouki

  • The Uilleann pipes used to be called the Union pipes and developed from ideas passing from makers in Scotland and Ireland. Wikipedia the Pastoral pipes for a history.

  • other wise also know as the galway pipes

  • I know I should be commenting on how amazing this music is.. and how much I LOVE uilleann pipes BUT... I can't help but mention how much the guitar reminds me of sleeping beauty... the drunk? Anyone?

  • WOW, that was a great music piece!! Fabulous!! I loved the both of you!! Always great to hear such beautiful and happy music!!

    Thanks for your great share!!!

    brnbear99

  • can anybody tell me where i can get a really good set of uilleann pipes in ireland

  • Pearse93,send me a youtube mail with your email address if you like, a friend of mine makes them in Cork but he wouldn't be too happy with me posting his contact details up on the youtube, he's only making them a few years but he's been playing all his life - I'll have to ask him first though...

  • sweeeeet!

  • Uilleann Pipes in D of Boxwood made by Andreas Rogge.

  • great feeling

  • I have nothing to add... Fantastic!

But what is the name of the first jig? I think I'm in love with it! ;)

  • tro tro bo jdr

  • thanks! more questions.... how do you get that tonguing sound between the notes on these pipes? sometimes it goes glisso, and sometimes it seems to go pa pa pa and then carry on... dont know if the sound is so obvious in this particular video, but in others it is....

  • It's all in the fingers. During staccato playing like you describe, that's the player closing the chanter between notes....

If you want to send me a message with any more questions, we wouldn't have to clutter up this video with all these comments. :) I can point you to some good internet piping resources too, if you're interested. Drop me a line.

  • anybody know if it's easy to get a lefty pipe and if they are much more expensive? ha

  • Some makers will make you a lefty set if you ask. In general, they shouldn't be much more expensive, but that's up to the individual maker. It is harder to find a used lefty set, but if you're buying new, they're not that hard to come by.

  • wie geil xDD^^

  • is that a 'left handed' pipe?

  • Yep, looks like it. My fellow piper and friend with whom I play all the time is a lefty piper, and that's the direction left handed sets go. Unless of course it's the mandola that's lefty, and the video is flipped...

  • great i love it....

  • what's the name of the first tune?

  • I've been trying to find that out as well.

  • "the long note"

  • Thanks!

  • sorry i got that wrong ,it is called "stranger at the gate".....this is definately the proper title

  • This is a lovely set! And what a bonus with there being 2 songs in one vid!

  • Class act! simple as that!!!

  • unreal!!!

  • Anyone know the name of the last tune in this set - one of the nicest jigs I,ve heard for a while!!!

  • paul o shaughnessy's jig

  • wow he's a lefty! and he's damn good too!

    beautiful set too!

  • Gorgeous.

  • Wow!!! That guys good!!!
