Sorry, but I have to dispute some of your choices. You left out "The
Green Berets" and "Hellfighters". Two of my faves. Most of the othanksthers were right on..I did not care for a couple of your picks, but everybody has their opinion.
Well the Longest Day was filled with Stars just like How The West Was Won bith with John Wayne who did not play a leading role. I totally loved the Searchers and Big Jake & The Man Who Shot Liverty Valance. Big Jake is funny in that almost everyone thought he was dead.
well.Eldorado and Rio Bravo are the same movie..Mitchem was better than Martin.. Scratch Longest Day.....fighting Kentuckian wasnt bad....Donavans reef or North to Alaska should be added he wasnt bad in those comedies.
What about "The Island in the Sky" and "The High and the Mighty"?,those two,in my book, were such classics that have been lost for so many years, but finally brought back to life on DVD;The High and the Mighty is regarded as one of my favorite Duke movies thanks to the powerful, remarkable and Oscar winning score by Dimitri Tiomkin; Also my other favorite Duke movie is "North to Alaska",that movie deserves some credit.
John Wayne had a lesser known film Directed By Raoul Walsh I would put on this list - the only movie Wayne and Roy Rodgers appeared together in - "Dark Command" This movie is based upon a true story with some Hollywood Liberties taken and it is the next Movie Wayne & Claire Trevor did after "Stagecoach"
Hell he only had a couple of minutes of on screen time in the Longest Day how could you possibly include that. It wasnt a John Wayne film it was a cameo appearance. And I agree where is Donovans Reef, Big Jake, Flying Tigers, Wings of Eagles, Flying Leathernecks....it is almost impossible to make a top 20 films of all time by the Duke.

That's a hard one to call because there are so many good John Wayne movies. One I'd put in my top 20 would be Chisum. Probably could think of more. I'd put a lot of the same ones you did and maybe some different ones.
Whoever came up with this top 20 must have been drinking...you or you guys left alot of great John Wayne movies out, ranked some higher than they shoul've been and put some in here that shouldn't have been....how much did you have to drink?
I've read some of the comments and think one in particular was written by a moron, anyway, choices are to hard to make, everyone loves a different one. Does anyone remember a film where J Wayne was an officer in the Civil War, and his son who he hardly knew, joined the army just to get close to him. JW wanted to keep it strictly business. Also, his son fell off a horse showing off to him while doing a drill where you stand in between 2 horses and ride both of them? I saw it with my grandpa in the early 1980s. I'd love to know what it is called. Thanks.
@davedaddy101 Of course! The title was RIO GRANDE, third part of John Ford's "Cavalry Trilogy" (the others were "Fort Apache" and "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon". The young soldier "Jeff" was played by 16-year-old Claude Jarman, jr., and his mom, Duke's wife, by Maureen O'Hara. And the two other boys doing the "Roman Riding" scene were Ben Johnson and Harry "Dobe" Carey, jr. They did it, as Dobe told, really themselves, without stuntmen. That was fabulous, unforgettable!
The Longest Day was not a "John Wayne" movie but an ensemble cast of every male actor in Hollywood or Britain. Should not be on this list. Fighting Seabees would have been better, just to see him jitterbug!
@TheHoosierguy52 Oops, I forgot "Big Jake" with which I would replace "McClintock". What the heck, it's hard trying to list the top 20 of his movies. I never saw a John Wayne Movie that I didn't like.
First of all, jackass, John Wayn was in his 40's during WWII. Technically he was too old. Also, the military wouldn't let him sign up because of his age. They told him he would do more for the war effort by making movies that boost morale, WHICH HE DID!! He made ALOT!!!
And just out of curiosity, are you serving your country in the military? If not, shut your trap about John Wayne!!

Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and Rod Serling. These were my heroes, not you, Wayne? Damn coward.
My favorite was "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" with "The Big Trail" a close second, actually just as good, and "The Searchers" ranking third. "The Big Trail," Wayne's 1st starring role at age 23, was an early widescreen film shot on location all across the West in 1930 by director Raoul Walsh. If you've seen it on a big screen at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, you never forget it. Look it up in Wikipedia.
it is really hard to choose which movie would deserve which place but if anything i do think that either quiet man or rooster cogburn should deserve 1st. I do like the searchers and it is actually one of my favorites next to comancharos but, for shear quality and popualrity i think the quiet man or rooster cogburn should be number one
In basic agreement but would definitely move "The Longest Day" out of the top 5 not because it isn't a great movie, but it was an huge ensemble production. Would move both "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" and "They Were Expendable" up --- one into the No. 5 slot and the other right behind it. Both are extremely strong films which have withstood the test of time. SWAYR is the anchor which holds the "Cavalry Trilogy" together & TWE may be the best WWII naval action film ever.
sure actors play make beleive but the duke died becouse of a real cancer and others i know have been told they had cancer but sherlene nearly died for a cancer that did not exist and others like her have suffered and some have died not because of cancer but becouse of doctors that want a larger home faster car of bigger boat if your not sure what i am talking about please go to msbones 1950 a slow death
I never got the fascination with Rio Bravo - It's essentially El Dorado with Robert Mitchum. This is a good list, though. I haven't seen any of his war films - I guess I'll get one tonight and see what I'm missing. I grew up on his Westerns; I love them, but most of them weren't as gritty as Eastwood's work with Leone. If Wayne worked with another brilliant director after John Ford, such as Leone or even Hitchcock, he would have been remembered a little better.
John Wayne is so over rated it's ridiculous! The guy was old, husky and so out of shape! Don't know what people see in the guy at all? His real name was Marion and had the most gay walk in history! Anyone who likes this guy must be some old, stupid redneck living in Texas! I also read somewhere that he was best friends with Rock Hudson! He also had about 50 pounds of shit stuck to his colon! John Wayne sucks big, hairy monkey balls! He’s an old lady’s dream!
@awesomeguy1979 There's nothing awesome about you, guy. I feel sorry for you. With all that spleen about an American icon, you must be one miserably unhappy dude. I bet you voted for Obama too.
Big Jake, Rooster Cogburn, In Old California, The Green Berets, Flying Tigers, the list goes on and on and on. The Duke was and still is the best! Long Live The Duke!!!!! Anybody else hate people who are like, " John Wayne movies are gay because they're old the acting sucks."?
"They were expendable" ranks as the top war movie of world war two, even though it was made in 1945 shortly after the war ended, and filmed off Florida, it was one of John Fords best, and the duke was superb ty for listing
I would change the order, but I won't argue about the selections. Or not much, anyway... "In Harm's Way" was a terrible movie, with bad acting by everyone involved. Even worse than "The Green Berets".
The Shootist Hondo True Grit Rio Bravo War Wagon The Cowboys The Searchers The Sons of Katie Elder Stagecoach El Dorado Green Berrets North To Alaska AND THE GRAND FINALE R I O L O B O!
Definitely The Searchers & The Quiet Man are right where they belong. However, I would have moved She Wore A Yellow Ribbon much higher for it was one of Wayne's best performances especially when you figure he was 41 years old convincingly playing a man in his early 60s. One almost forgotten picture that was left out & which he made for Republic was the largely forgotten "Allegheny Uprising."
@agamick Yep. The Duke pretty much gave up on pushing himself as an actor in the 60's. He worked too much with directors who were his friends (especially the pedestrian John Ford-wannabes Andy McLaglen and Burt Kennedy). Thus, he was rarely challenged as an actor. The Duke was an actor who needed a very strong hand at director to really achieve his potential ie: the REAL John Ford, Howard Hawks in his prime, and later Mark Rydell and Don Siegel.
Ahhh...Big Jake, Rio Lobo, North to Alaska, Chisum, Cahill US Marshall and a few more were missed. Have you ever seen North to Alaska. Good John Wayne movie
"the sands of iwo jima" should be rated much higher. also "the horse soldiers" should be in the top 10 and is not even on your list. glad to see you put "hatari" and "they were expendable' on your list.
Not a bad list in my opinion, The duke made so many movies and so many are so good its hard to list the top 10 20 or 40. We all have our favorites. The think with the Duke is that even some of the lesser know work is well first rate. One of my favorites is The Sea Chase. But to me his last movie The Shootist stands at the top, One fine piece of work he turned in on that one. He made over 250 a career that is second to none.
True Grit is crap compared to Man who Shot Liberty Valence, Red River, In Harms Way, The Cowboys, McClintock, The Quit Man, you pilgrams need to get out and see more Duke Wayne movies. He got his oscar for T.G. because he might not have had a better chance that late in his carrer. If he hadn't already gotten the oscar I think he would have had a chance again with the Cowboys, Liberty Valence and Red River were his best acting. He was nominated for Sands of Iwo Jima.
Also, The Longest Day is a great film, but we're talking about JOHN WAYNE MOVIES. He was in less than half of that film. I would have put that lower on the list or gotten rid of it. And I would replace it with Alamo or something
I hope that "top 20" list wasn't in the order of preference. I'd rearrange it considerably. I'd have Rio Grande in the top 2 or 3, and I'd add Horse Solders and have it up around the top too. And how about Big Jake. Too many good ones to talk about. I loved the guy--loved his movies--him and John Ford. There will never be another like him.
Hey everyone! It was nice that clubj95 did this for it is his choice for top best! He could have picked 5. The Barbarian and the Geisha 4. The Conqueror 3.The Greatest Story Ever Told 2. Chisum- and the number one movie for all time for The Duke.....CIRCUS WORLD
I bought a paperback biography of him when I was about 11 as a present for my sister. (No, I don't know what I was thinking either.) According to that he made something like 200 movies from 1930. Alot of younger people don't like him, too old-fashioned, maybe a little bit racist (I've heard his political views described as crpto-Fascist, and the Green Berets when everybody was just waking up to what was happening in Nam didn't help), but there's no denying he was a superb film actor.
I'm partial to Big Jake....He was the ultimate Bad-ass in that one...I know alot of people would disagree, but alot of Wayne's movies make him look oafish, and cartoonish...In Big jake, he is larger than life, and fearless...Hell, he even looks bigger than his horse in this movie...The searchers, and Red River are classics though....I didn't care for him in True Grit, and the Shootist..Made him look too much like a clown...Just my 2 cents.
My #1 would prob be In Harms Way this movie gets a bad wrap because it is in black and white and is very long but look at the stars that are in it with John. McClintock is a close second, and you missed Big Jake and fighting Seabees. He made so many movies that it is hard to pick just 20. What matters most is that we have all these great patoric movies to watch and enjoy
hatari i really didnt like that moie...hes western soul...and True Grit only 12?where are Sons of Katy Elder,Rio Lobo,Big Jake,Chisum,U.S marshal Cahill.....I agree for Rio Brao and few others but dude u left some great mouies out.
Can't remember the names to half his movies, but : Back To Bataan, Rio Lobo, Big Jake, Rooster Cogburn, Flying Tigers, Hellcats of The Navy should have made the list.
El dorado is number one perfect tough guy script and true grit number 2 John Wayne put effort into it. And three would b stagecoach it's the movie that made John famous
Hard to argue with that list. Only one I would drop is the longest day and I would move Red River in its spot in the countdown (Montgomery Clift was so good in that) and add Big Jake (Richard Boone's dying comment was classic) to the top 20. Alamo doesn't belong on the list. While alot of fun and it was good to see Ken Curtis get one of his few straight parts, there is just something off about that movie.
Nice list, The problem with trying to rank the top 20 John Wayne Movies is that he left such a large body of work. He had a good 20 years as an Movie actor before Stagecoach. I would have maybe changed things a little with your list but not much. I sure miss the Duke.
50/50 I know you will scream but Hitari is one of my fav's , that's cause the music....then Searchers, True Grit, Cowboys, She wore a Yellow Ribbon, Rio Bravo, McClintock is played too much but gotta love, Quiet Man, Shootist, El Dorado. Fort Apache, Big Jake, then Liberty Valance, and the War Movies come after those (why arent these words in spell check? that's something to gripe about:)
I have to agree with the rest who say Big Jake shoulda been on the list. T he line where he tells his son (Patrick) that , you can call me Jake, you an call me Jacob, you can call me a dirty son of a bitch, but if you ver call me "daddy" again, I'll finish this fight. And then he repeats Richard Boones line of, your fault, my fault, nobodies fault, I'm gonna blow your head clean off. Big Jake shold have been on this list.
Sorry, but I have to dispute some of your choices. You left out "The
Green Berets" and "Hellfighters". Two of my faves. Most of the othanksthers were right on..I did not care for a couple of your picks, but everybody has their opinion.

BucksStudent 9 months ago
John Wayne is so over rated it's ridiculous! The guy was old, husky and so out of shape! Don't know what people see in the guy at all? His real name was Marion and had the most gay walk in history! Anyone who likes this guy must be some old, stupid redneck living in Texas! I also read somewhere that he was best friends with Rock Hudson! He also had about 50 pounds of shit stuck to his colon! John Wayne sucks big, hairy monkey balls! He’s an old lady’s dream!
awesomeguy1979 9 months ago
@awesomeguy1979 There's nothing awesome about you, guy. I feel sorry for you. With all that spleen about an American icon, you must be one miserably unhappy dude. I bet you voted for Obama too.

John Wayne, the only actor who you could make a top 50 list and still feel like your leaving some major ones out.
BoyNamedSue4 9 months ago 2
Oh yeah, the war wagon too.
Docdaman4 10 months ago
Big Jake, Rooster Cogburn, In Old California, The Green Berets, Flying Tigers, the list goes on and on and on. The Duke was and still is the best! Long Live The Duke!!!!! Anybody else hate people who are like, " John Wayne movies are gay because they're old the acting sucks."?
Docdaman4 10 months ago 2
"They were expendable" ranks as the top war movie of world war two, even though it was made in 1945 shortly after the war ended, and filmed off Florida, it was one of John Fords best, and the duke was superb ty for listing
TheAlliswell 10 months ago
Rio Bravo and Red River are ny Favorits. But i miss Duke's "The Alamo"!
DukeFanGermany 10 months ago
I would change the order, but I won't argue about the selections. Or not much, anyway... "In Harm's Way" was a terrible movie, with bad acting by everyone involved. Even worse than "The Green Berets".

Definitely The Searchers & The Quiet Man are right where they belong. However, I would have moved She Wore A Yellow Ribbon much higher for it was one of Wayne's best performances especially when you figure he was 41 years old convincingly playing a man in his early 60s. One almost forgotten picture that was left out & which he made for Republic was the largely forgotten "Allegheny Uprising."
agatematt 11 months ago
Most of the 60s westerns need to be removed!
agamick 11 months ago
@agamick Yep. The Duke pretty much gave up on pushing himself as an actor in the 60's. He worked too much with directors who were his friends (especially the pedestrian John Ford-wannabes Andy McLaglen and Burt Kennedy). Thus, he was rarely challenged as an actor. The Duke was an actor who needed a very strong hand at director to really achieve his potential ie: the REAL John Ford, Howard Hawks in his prime, and later Mark Rydell and Don Siegel.
mkeogh76 10 months ago
Sorry I cant watch Hatari. The Horse Soldiers should be top 10. Flying Tigers and Three Godfathers need to be top 20
agamick 11 months ago
I agree you left out a few.
Green Beret
Big Jake
Rooster Cogburn
Cahill US Marshall
Chisum
and many more....
i guess when you are trying to list just the top 20 it's kinda hard.
I've never watched a bad John Wayne movie!!!
He is the Duke!

MrStokiegaz 1 year ago
"the sands of iwo jima" should be rated much higher. also "the horse soldiers" should be in the top 10 and is not even on your list. glad to see you put "hatari" and "they were expendable' on your list.
pauliec100 1 year ago
lambry1 1 year ago
Not a bad list in my opinion, The duke made so many movies and so many are so good its hard to list the top 10 20 or 40. We all have our favorites. The think with the Duke is that even some of the lesser know work is well first rate. One of my favorites is The Sea Chase. But to me his last movie The Shootist stands at the top, One fine piece of work he turned in on that one. He made over 250 a career that is second to none.
BH206L3 1 year ago
i would have put "McClintock" higher than 13.
rickyd0821 1 year ago

Lalumia4 1 year ago
Red River is best
nulife022 1 year ago
I hope that "top 20" list wasn't in the order of preference. I'd rearrange it considerably. I'd have Rio Grande in the top 2 or 3, and I'd add Horse Solders and have it up around the top too. And how about Big Jake. Too many good ones to talk about. I loved the guy--loved his movies--him and John Ford. There will never be another like him.

@luigicamp69 I actually did look. A dozen sites came up with all sorts of boat movies with him. Thanks for saying.
SexyIslanders 1 year ago
I bought a paperback biography of him when I was about 11 as a present for my sister. (No, I don't know what I was thinking either.) According to that he made something like 200 movies from 1930. Alot of younger people don't like him, too old-fashioned, maybe a little bit racist (I've heard his political views described as crpto-Fascist, and the Green Berets when everybody was just waking up to what was happening in Nam didn't help), but there's no denying he was a superb film actor.
madmax8903 1 year ago

What matters most is that we have all these great patoric movies to watch and enjoy
minman094 1 year ago
I think no. 1 should be Hondo but you go ahead and do what you want. A man ought to do what he thinks is right.

fugaU 1 year ago
For all the people saying add a movie or two, you gotta say what movie or movies to remove.
maxdavid84 1 year ago
Hard to argue with that list. Only one I would drop is the longest day and I would move Red River in its spot in the countdown (Montgomery Clift was so good in that) and add Big Jake (Richard Boone's dying comment was classic) to the top 20. Alamo doesn't belong on the list. While alot of fun and it was good to see Ken Curtis get one of his few straight parts, there is just something off about that movie.
maxdavid84 1 year ago

SASRful 1 year ago
I have to agree with the rest who say Big Jake shoulda been on the list. T he line where he tells his son (Patrick) that , you can call me Jake, you an call me Jacob, you can call me a dirty son of a bitch, but if you ver call me "daddy" again, I'll finish this fight. And then he repeats Richard Boones line of, your fault, my fault, nobodies fault, I'm gonna blow your head clean off. Big Jake shold have been on this list.
