  • The only problem here is that I love cars, and cars cost money. A lot of money.

I couldn't give a shit if I lived in a renovated shipping container if I got to drive a Maserati.

  • I do all that...because im bored. It gives me something to do.

  • @InsaneBillykane Meditate, hike, exercise, read, journal, travel, volunteer, have meaningful conversations, create.

  • Makes perfect sense :)

  • I am so taking this advice and going back to basics, back to when what mattered most made us happy. All the material things are nice, but they just dont fill that void of unhappiness! Thank you for your inspirational videos! =)

  • This is so true. My boyfriend and I use to have very little money, enough for food, bills and a little play, we had a 93 lincoln, no TV, and a little room with a mattress on the floor. Even tho we didn have much we were very very happy, up at 7am evryday, always out having fun, never fought, was never bored, now that we have alot of money, our Range rover, a great house, a huge bed, Plasma tvs nice furniture, this is the most in our lifetime that we have ever been unhappy, and we fight everyday!

  • hey steve, you have a website?

  • @haileyroseismyname No website yet.

  • @vagabondsteve Ok. By the way, thank you for being. Really.

  • @haileyroseismyname I do have a Twitter account at vagabondsteve.

  • @vagabondsteve I like your style and I would like to follow you on twitter.

  • i agree people keep chasing after things in life that dont matter and keep worrying about stupid shit people need to let go and just be

  • Do you play guitar or any string instrument?

  • @JusticieroDeLaMuerte No, why?

  • ure the bom hahah but its treu, its like u read my mind

  • i need a schrink like u :)

  • hey man, cool stuff, clearly spoken.

to add to your last statement about ' what makes you happy', i've heard this at the mooji-channel in which he was referring to ramana (or some other yogi, it doesn't matter now.)

he asked something like this: is there happiness in outer things? are we happy about the finally attainment of the desired object?

or are we relieved because our minds can stop wanting for a while? (for 2 weeks probably at most ;) is thís the peace that we're all searching for?

  • @lejazzetmoi Thank you commenting. Interesting point. The spirit seeks relief from the perpetual state of wanting.

  • HANG ON A MOMENT, WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF HAPPINESS? IS IT EMOTIONAL? IS IT SOCIAL? IS IT A STATE OF BEING? I AM NOT A HAPPY PERSON. I AM A JOYFUL ONE

  • @raniyang Internal.

  • Unfortunately if we don't strive for the things you mentioned, we will not reap the other byproducts that come from attaining them. They may not make everyone happy per se, but will provide more financial security, put food on the table, keep a roof over your head, and allow us to live a more comfortable life. This is the way society is, it sucks, but what can we do? I've come to the realization that life isn't all about happiness, we can see this even in nature. It's about survival mostly.

  • @b0ondockz Live simply & desire little.

  • Nearly everything you've said is what I been asking for? I look in sky and say god why doesn't life work for me ? and here you are. A peaceful, wise human being explaining something's that I can understand. Thank you for your existence .

  • @fallcrysilk *You* or *I* won't be happy if we are broke, lonely, cancerous, and sexless, b/c we *believe* we should be paid, getting laid, and disease free.....yet our actions say otherwise....we smoke and drink -thus get cancer, we spend our money on useless materials, to try and get laid, but we spend our money, then *can't* get laid (going out costs $) and eventually we become lonely.......monkeys w/ consciousness

Vagabondsteve, your vids are awesome man!...def sum food for thought

  • just smoke weed as bill hicks said " i can do everything when im high that i can do when im sober... i just realise its not worth the fucking time." smoke it every day all day. :D

  • I've tried to explain this concept to my bf and he doesn't get it. Maybe he does and just doesn't agree or doesn't see the same things. I'm happy with what I have. My happiness comes from knowing that I am the one that is able to determine the kind of life I will lead and the kind of person I will be and not the type of things I will own. The more, more, more mentality that people have is a huge turnoff and frankly very sad. Happiness comes from within.

  • I'll be happy when I'm six feet below.

  • all the solutions are internally based while all the problems are usually externally based. society definitely pushes the otherwise :D

  • I liked it... in fact i will watch more of your videos.. thanks handsome!

  • you dont seem very happy yourself, which is common for people trying to think philosophically too much.

  • you blow my mind good job i was really high for a moment feeling what you said

  • When Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" he was talking about the Pursuit of Spiritual Happiness!

  • this kinda stuff makes the most apsolute and uter sence to me, ive been unhappy sence 2011 started and just resently ive been thinking about the world like this and as everyone around me gasps in shock of the new me it makes me feel happyer because i know that there still trying to follow others expectations insted of their own.

  • wat u say is the truth like wen i got my xbox 3 years ago.wen i gotit waz very sad

  • @fallcrysilk haha awesome comment

  • OMG i know something it will maybe help but it sucks yhea i wanted always a Xbox360 i have it and i am doing nothing just playing and playing always the same BUT always but if you have a dream uhh You want to be the biggest man in de world what you need to do is not being the biggest man in the world maybe the second and what your dream is to be the biggest man in the world and you wil have you dream without dreaming that you are already the biggest man in the world:D but life sucks and i am 17

  • BTW my dad denaid promotion XD

  • I-pod touch 4

bought it 6 months ago and not make me *yyyayyyyyyyyy love life*

but did made me happier =P

    Although agree with you.

  • @yotam2010 Yes, but this too shall pass.

  • smoke weed

  • what about helping other people ?

If i help other people in life and that makes me happy,

so is this true happieness ?

  • @MrGaky It's temporal. Go within for true peace.

  • It is useful to contrast internal vs. external progress, but one should recognize that a balanced interdependence may exist between the two, rather than an opposition. Generally, what we call "happiness" is really limited, ephemeral, and relative contentment, but in truth, the ideal of happiness refers to an absolute state. The milestones we pass during our progress toward that state, be they material or spiritual, are important, but should not be confused with the final destination.

  • @fallcrysilk For people that live on the surface of life you're right. Happiness is circumstantially based. Dig deeper. I met a happy guy with no arms and legs who was happy. Explain that.

  • @vagabondsteve i thumbs u up!! people dont realise this fake system they'r living in, i always thought there was something wrong with me cos i was different to everyone, but i came to realise that it was that i could see how fake everything was, and people would criticise me for not "trying" hard enough,or telling me what i "need" in my life. if u just sit back and slow down this fast pased world,u see the illusion, watching every1 rush around like headless chickens, when happiness is within

  • @MrSweatyZombie Spot on!

  • your the fuckin man!

  • worrying about money is a reality, keeping up with bills etc... can be very stressful

  • The pursuit of external things: money, fame, etc., that indeed does make many of us "happy" - or at least very exited every time we get close, or seem to be on the right track. It's not the thing we pursue, but the pursuit itself. A calm state of contented homoeostasis that Buddhists and Yogis describe is probably more healthy - but doesn't seem to be the state that most people are looking for.

We can consciously choose what we want to be passionate about. Pick something healthy & positive.

  • sometimes the things that shock or scare the shit out of people make you happy not the dubbed "success" that this world shows you

  • You faded fast at the end, it's ok it did make sense. You were getting a the idea that we establish a 'set-point' of happiness, that is we're all about as happy as we set our minds out to be. I've attained things and become happy for a short time only to return to the same level of happiness as before. The same appies to suffering, we endure setbacks and return to our previous level of happiness, whatever it was. You taught me that our goal should be to raise our 'set-point' of happiness.

  • @gleclair2000 Actually it would be to lower our 'set-point' of happiness. Suffering comes when we raise the 'set-point' too high.

  • @vagabondsteve Ah yes, as the buddha said "Life is suffering". The more we accept that truth the better prepared we will be when difficulties arise. So my expectations for being happy are lowered as well. The 'set-point' I refer to is what we habitually arrive at. Let's not forget the buddha was smiling, I think he made joy a habit. I think it's possible to be blissfully happy and at the same time fully aware that suffering is around the corner.

  • i just feel as if we are connected with everything, like there are sunny days, clouddy days and days when it rains and its a cycle somtimes the rain lasts for weeks or months at a time and that would obviously be depression, then the sun comes out for a while and thats your happiness...

  • The present is happiness, for it is God, communion with the being of bliss. I have myself all anxious and chocked in this big mental confusion of mind, of problems that seemed so real, and I kept searching day after, day after, and months past at this rate. If you find yourself in this suffering (suffocating on air). Laugh at yourself for getting choked up over imagination, nothing in your head is real, its all kind of like a cartoon idea bubble, and we can choose to stop making it real any time

  • @dopebozoish Thanks for watching and commenting. Have you read Eckhart Tolle? He was suicidal before he awakened. Your suffering is a blessing in disguise. Eckhart Tolle, "this too shall pass".

  • very wise, and very true. We understand it (illusory nature of our dreams) when live awhile...when young and don't know, we imagine them, once achieved 9often VERY hard), we discover there is NOTHING in it that is pleasing, that it was an illusory pursuit, chasing after the dust

  • Do you meditate? How often?

  • @ 4:58... it makes sense Steve ;)

  • this stuff is great man! btw are you a vagabond? :D

  • @TheJuliusJT Yes, at various periods of my life. I tend to alternate between being semi-settled and vagabonding.

  • It's true. My family is rich, but I am really depressed. I'm an f-ing emo.

  • Great! I finally understand now! I will finally except life 4 how it is. :-$

  • no dude it makes perfect sense

but its not as easy as you say, our minds have been trained ever since we were children, now we're gonna have to retrain our minds, and thats gonna take some time an effort

  • You want to be happy? Go volunteer for your local food pantry or homeless shelter! You will surly be happy by helping others!

  • decided to go with the vid neway?

  • I love you. |I'm a Buddhist who is starting to realise we're always looking for something. You've got it right dude.

  • your exaggerated or delusional or conditioned thoughts about a situation are what makes you sad or mad or unhappy. like you said, if you can just except the situation for what it is, instead of fretting about it for days or weeks or months, and just move on, nothing should make you unhappy. respect my man.

  • Finally a fellow pessimist like my self. OMG you think just like me! we should be friends.

School was always, to me, pointless. I only really care about collage.

  • @mohamedeiddie97 Believe it or not if you "stop trying to be happy" you'll be a lot happier. Watch some of my other videos it will help. Also stop looking to the world to be happy. Go within.

  • do u live off the grid cause i feel u but i still say money make me happy no matter what even in bad health , just give me one week with 50 billion dollars and i will try to make myself happy

  • @SuperFeazell I live on the grid but tread lightly. Simplicity has given me so much freedom. Yes, money can help but it also can ruin people. Look at all the unhappy millionaires or lottery winners who lost everything. Simple living brings contentment because it affords you the time and energy to know thyself.

  • Life sucks and happiness eludes us, and what few moments of pleasure we get only show us how empty and meaningless the rest of our existance truly is.

  • Ever seen someone drive out of their mansion in a lambo, to go skydiving say, "I'm unhappy."?...

    Didn't think so....

  • if your happy and you know it clap your hands!

  • @grvonny *stays silent*

  • clap clap!

  • The more you have the more you have to worry about and the more you think you have to lose.

  • Be happy for the fact that you aren't.

  • ''There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way''

    kiss:)

  • Awesome video, Steve!

You explain things with eloquent simplicity - things that are often overlooked.

    Brilliant!

  • @Pebble11 Thank you!

  • HA ha. Kevin collects own beaks. Man, I love that comedy. It cracked me up so much. All the characters were just so well scripted!

Hey if you enjoyed Just shoot me, especially the actor who does Finch, well, he did the voice for the lama in 'The Emperor's new groove'. To my opinion one of the best 2d animation movies ever! The mannerisms are perfect. Check it out.

  • @Domzdream Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out.

  • i cant be happy. im really trying, but it just seems impossible to me. you have some really good words, you just can explain things so good! it made me think in alot of things. but im still not happy.

  • @jbe1996 Happiness is overrated. It makes us unhappy. Just practice being.

  • Nice to see you shine!

What is the spontaneous word after the sentence "I think I have to redo this one"? Made me laugh :)

    Thanks Steve for your inspiration!

  • Thank you for your support!

  • That was very deep and very good, I could listen to you all day. There was nothing wrong with this video, it was perfect and so true. I love listening to deep brothers like yourself

  • @blububbles1001 I really appreciate your comment. Thank you!

  • If happiness cannot be derived from being with others, then why do people have friends? Why do people get married? Aren't we social beings by nature? (Supposedly studies indicate that people who have these things live longer).

Is this more an admission of helplessness? That some of us may never be this lucky, therefore we just somehow learn to live without these things? (Referring more to love, not money).

Might be the cynic in me speaking, but I'm just confused.

  • I think you're confusing the difference between others being the source of your happiness vs others adding to the happiness which already exists within you.

  • I'm glad you have a camera.

  • Thanks for watching.

  • thats why life was made, to make us happy, so take it as a script, if you dont be happy with life, and you thinking all these thinks till you die, you will be just terrible forever.

  • What's the point of having goals then?

Yes, buying a new gen console game is fun and makes me happy....atleast until the next gen is out : /

    shit

  • The point of goals is in the the steps not the destination.

  • Dis is so true things do not make u happy

  • no balls

  • my dog is depressed

    help

  • I understand what you are saying. You are a very wise person. It's just that, no one has ever "told" me or tried to make me think that what "I" personally think would make me happy, would really make me happy. It's just the way that I feel. And in this case, what would make me happy is being with the person that I really care for. I hope this makes sense.

  • Another person can't make you happy. It's a false emotional high. Soon the the relationship ends and we're stuck again with ourselves. Stand on a solid foundation of internal contentment and let everything else in the material world be the cherry on top.

  • That makes sense. Thank you. I subscribed.

  • Thank you for subscribing.

  • so..ur expectations in other people are low? this reply is based on a reply i made in your 'life sucks' video. If u dont believe other people can make you happy...how are you going to ever let anyone in in your life..? NOt that i believe in love, i dont ..i dont ever want to get married so.. im not talking about me here ..but... some people find their soul mate and they get married and they stay in love all their lives. YEa it doesn't happen much..but it does happen.

  • Relationships are enhanced when we stop trying to extract our sense of happiness from others. Allow others into your life but don't expect that they can make you happy.

  • Thank you for subscribing.

  • Well done!

  • There's being creative (playing the guitar), meaningful conversations, time spent in nature, volunteering, walking, reading, loving, and following your bliss.

  • what you say really makes sense, in a clear way!

    thnxs

  • you are awesome

  • i get what your saying! materialistic things, does nothing but give us the elution of happiness. But when all we think back and realize, that didn't really make me happy it just gave me the idea of happiness. U make urself happy by whatever your well being tells you.

  • People keep forcing me to be happy, and it doesn't do shit!

  • Don't get perfectionistic on us now, Steve *LOL*. I thought this video was terrific. I understood what you meant by realizing that wanting after external things is a conditioned behavior. For me, I think that wanting clothes and things is now only a way to add to what I already have on the inside--to kind of play up what I have to offer.

Thank you for your vids. I will make a response to your vid to me and others soon :).

    ~Colleen

  • Funny. Thank you for all your comments.

  • vagabondsteve, your videos made me create a youtube account so I could subscribe to them. Your thoughts strike a cord with me.

  • There are a lot of us out there. YouTube gives us a great vehicle to connect. Thank you for subscribing.

  • Its so difficult to see through this temporary illusion that we are in. I truly want to give up such strong desires for external reinforcement, but it's tough. Do you have any advice for someone who is already practicing daily meditation and concentration exercises?

Excellent video thanks for that :)

here is another very "enlightening" video

    watch?v=jajGKFsVRvo

  • Check out some of my other videos which address this issue. The best advice is to accept & observe your strong desire for external reinforcement. Allow your desire for reinforcement to be without resistance. As we grow spiritually these external desires fall by the wayside on their own accord without all the efforting. Focus on the internal and the external will take care of itself.

  • Strengthen the spiritual muscle & everything else falls into place. We have been doing it backwards all along. Thank you for commenting.

  • Steve, what you are saying is brilliant! So simple, yet it's something that doesn't occur to most people. And yes, it makes complete sense. But it's very easy to forget and get sucked into the illusion again and hop back onto the hamster wheel. Thank you for the reminder that I have a choice to willingly get off the wheel and just BE. I'm grateful you exist.

  • Thank you for the love & support. How is your progress? We all need reminders. A close circle of unplugged friends helps tremendously.

  • you are a breath of fresh air, simple, clear and helpful messages, no hype, no ego, just a wonderful energy, thanks for sharing :)

  • Thank you for such a beautiful comment. Appreciate your support!

  • doesnt saying, i need nothing tell the govenment they have total control and we are just happy little workers

  • Thank you for your support!

  • "All of our unhappiness comes from our inability to be alone."

    -Jean de la Bruyere

Jean de la Bruyere. French satiric moralist, 1645-1696.

  • Brilliant! Thank you for sharing.

  • I'd say it's more about knowing WHAT makes you happy - what activity or state of being. I was thinking about what I'd do if I had unlimited money, and the answer was; not much different than I can do now. Money or "success" are not the enablers. Obviously having money helps, but HOW MUCH? I think a lot of people seem to just assume more = better, regardless of what it takes.

  • Well stated. People spill their life energy upon the treadmill of more = better. Less is more.

  • "Yes ...Re do this"..You forgotten about the Human Condition and how we are suffering no matter what. Even Jacquy Onasis

and Princess Diana were suffering with all thier millions and welth. But don't blame it on the rich they have a right to suffer just like every ones else. They are hiuman too !

  • There is nothing wrong with the external things. That is true. Attachment to them is causing deviation from who we are.

There are countless examples of great wise people using external things to help people get to the higher understanding.

Just like YouTube. Great external thing that can be used for your videos!

    Luv ya Steve,

    Helena

  • Thank you for the comment.

  • i admire your authenticity ,gj.

  • I can't say that I agree, because this it would be basically ignorance, but to be chasing something like a dream is the happiness itself, it's not the attainting the thing that should be the main focus of happiness (btw that is why people fail) but it is the process of creating that dream that should be the main focus of happiness which is really about being one with the moment and with the harmony of what one loves doing that is true happiness. And you can train yourself to be in that state.

  • Within! We need practically nothing to be content. In fact the more we have the more we suffer. Thank you for your comment.

  • Excellent, Steve. The attainment of external things- and the energy we give them- takes us away from what life is really all about. "Smoke and mirrors"... a deceptive trick, an illusion of happiness. But truly an emptiness.

  • Well!humans live on average of 50-60yrs...wht do we do all these yrs.Just imagine doing nuthing for all those yrs with our "ever evolving genuis brains".Thts y people invented all these roles n attacted prices to them.Unfortunately those prices became more valuble than time itself. Instead of recognising we lost one minute, living in this minute, and we have next minute. v r unconcious with the roles n their price tags.we ignore the TRUTH, tht we were born with nuthing n die with nuthing.

  • Great point! It is amazing all the destructive things we do for egoic gratification. Why not instead create art, music, dance and poetry. Or walk in nature, volunteer, engage in meaningful conversations, and make our existence an act of kindness to all beings. Simple living liberates us from the madness.
