I did think that Chris Rock threw black women under the bus with this one. The focus seemed to be on all these unreasonable black women who spend ridiculous amounts of money, won't swim, etc. I agree that he should have asked WHY the popularity. Chris didn't ask what the motivations really are, didn't ask what role men play in enforcing certain standards. I also think that it wasn't a nuanced discussion so someone who isn't familiar with black hair might walk away with misleading ideas
People forget that the wig industry began with whites. No one has investigated how much white women spend on wigs weaves etc. White movie stars wear weaves as well as ordinary white citizens. Chris Rock is out to make a buck and the more controversy, the larger his pay is. That puts him in alignment with the greedy whites.
everyone wears a wevae in hollywood! most women around the world relax their hair straight not just blakc american women. cris rock is stupid and he should drop his black wife who has a weave. the movie bomb at the box office with dood reason. instead of targeting blsck women eh should hae did a study on the history of weave.
@tom11zz884 Sambo is a bit extreme. I think there is a difference between being a clown, not taking oneself too seriously and being a coon. he's a silly nerdish type of person when he was not being scripted; in his film u can clearly see this. But I don't think he's putting down black women all the time. He's merely trying to bring extremes in our community to light... avoid the extremes, know wat ur buying, who ur buying it from, and wat they did to get the product. Am I the only 1 who got that
I feel that most of the people who have an issue with the movie "Good Hair" must not understand the terminology as it is used among many African Americans. Good hair refers to a person whose hair has more of a relaxed curl or wave (easier to manage). The people who have that hair in black families are often praised and put up on pedestals. The supposed "Good Hair" compliment is also applied to males. The first and most important thing people need to realize is that good hair is hair that grows.
He is also doing everything in hispower to make blk women look bad & has sold out! I remember in a stand up show he did when he was describing the difference between blk & white women in porn, he says'the white women have on nice lingerie & their private hairs look all nice & permed but black women they're areas look like brillo pads and their bodies are covered in bullet holes & stab wounds. I was done w/ him then. His opinion of us has never been good & now he's getting paid off our disgrace.
I did not see cris rocks movie, nor will I'm a little peeved when blk stars become rich and d their best to disgrace their race. I'm from the states and let me tell you black women are NOT spending anything close to 1000 dollars for a weave! He has got his races mixed up, white women who put in hair weaves are spending that kind f money at high end salons. Black women traditionally go to the china man store and buy a couple of packs of yaky and put it in themselves. Chris rock is lying period.
It's not about looking "like" n e one... I wish every black women could grow a beautiful pam greer afro but most black womens' hair isn't one single texture it's a combination... becuz most american women aren't truly anyone single nationality... personally I have soft cottony african hair mixed with nasty wiry irishman beard hair... so 2 get it 2 grow I use a relaxer 2 make my hair all one texture so it only requires one consistent care regimen... also, white women perm and wear weaves too...
@iluvyouwyatt seriously my second hair texture is long red, orange and blonde wire like course hair; way courser than ur average black hair texture. And, it saws through my other texture and makes for a weird color... that would make ppl think I wasn't my dad's kid if he didn't have siblings with fire red hair and freckles which is truly odd on someone with dark brown skin (my little cuz)... and we haven't had a with person in our family tree for many many many generations. go figure
@jdarkangel11 The issue is not about weave per se. The issue isn't about what women of other ethnicities are doing. We're talking about what good hair means in the BLACK community.
man i really think black ladies are letting the side down. if us black men were going around with some indian guys hair on our head so we could look like brad pitt or david beckham we would never hear the end of it. i think beauty come in all types of styles.you don't have to wear someone else's hair thats crazy.Love you God made you beautifull don't be so weak to bow down to everything hollywood and caucasian .Black is beautifull too dont just copy the crowd THINK for yourself
I've said for a number of years that if I was to walk into a room of black women & there was only 1 who didn't have her hair straightened she would be the one I'd be more likely to talk to cuz I think there's something interesting going on in her mind that she chooses to buck the norm & be 'herself'.
I understand there is a lot of pressure to look a certain way but the woman I would want to raise my daughter with (if I have one) is one I'd prefer to have a bit more of an independent mind.
I disagree with you statement that he didn't ask why women were getting the weaves and relaxer. U may not have heard the question come out of his mouth but a number of the women talked about the reaction they get from society. Remember when the highschool girls were talking and saying they thought one of the girl's hair was a cute afro but they didn't think she'd fit in with a law firm? That's one example.
i agree, i think to have concentrated on the..why do black women want to get weaves/relaxers would have wasted valuable time on the obvious...really dont we all know why?.. however i thought the review was excellent
@popinjay3000 No you do not know why. The issue is personal to each and every woman who wears one. Some do it for diversity, some may do it because it is a useful protective style, some may do it because they rather have a weave than their own hair, some may do it to follow trends, some do it simply because they feel like it. To each his(her) own. Let's not make generalizations.
I was not in any way upset by the use of film to discuss this. I only think that there could have been some more discussions about natural hair being embraced by some black women and men, and perhaps he could have made a concluding point that there is not good or bad hair but healthy hair. Also, if anything some of the craziness was exhausting, but the stories were real!
JazzyNappBeauty I will surely check out your video review of Good Hair.
I tried to be as honest as possible.
It's not what I expected and Chris Rock did do a good job at actually answering some questions (not all), but I can understand why some black women are quite upset.
I still find that he portrayed the "regular" women as a bit flaky and that was unfortunate.

Chris Rock is a modern day Sambo.....ignorant to the core, and he loves to put down black women for some reason.
