  • FZ=sheer musical genius. I was lucky enough to see him perform twice.

  • an awesome show with 2 guitar gods

  • Absolute Genius!

  • Frank was TRUE greatness!

  • first thing i saw was borat..

  • @7or6 FZ was better looking than Borat. Not much of a statement though...

  • Excuse Me....Excuse Me...Who's Weeezle is this?

  • great jam. Im just thinking vai needed himself a longer pair of shorts

  • I could listen to Frank Zappa's guitar playing all day and never get sick of it.

  • Vai has more musical knowledge than Zappa had. That being said, Zappa had great choice of notes which made some of his stuff more memorable.

  • @Jasonconfused

    Jason,-are you confused ? I don't know.

But you, having the knowledge, can probably give us the answer.

    Wisdom is truth.

    Greets & rock on,

    Andy

  • @Jasonconfused You must be confused. More musical knowledge than Zappa? Get back to me when Vai writes his G-spot tornado, etc...

  • Vai reminds me of Yngwie Malmsteen. Both are fret board jockeys, neither plays with any soul or originality.

  • @DuhQuanNigstix Yeah i think you are right on that one..

  • esse aí é da época q o STEVE VAI usava calça curta.

  • hiuston, we have a problem.

  • Zappa gone bu at least luckily we still our Steve Vai

  • wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Vai has a style which is more showmanship. Frank's solos are more articulate and orchestral.

Both are great but Frank will always be the best lead ever born!

  • Ahh, back when Vai could actually play. Before his retarded hair metal, assumes anything he plays is good because its fast stage. well I have news for you, mr vai -- dragonforce plays faster than you and they SUCK!!!!!!

  • @MagicalEmoDucky It's not about speed, ur wayy off, keep trying though

  • @BledsoeBluvd You sir, need to go back and re-read what I wrote.

  • @MagicalEmoDucky I think you need to understand what I'm sayin. You say Dragonforce are faster than Vai, i'm simply pointing out that it's not about speed. What has Dragonforce being faster than Vai got to do with anything? You're clearly not hearing what Vai says on the guitar & only listening to the speed it is played it, therefor you're focusing on speed.

You say Vai assumes anything he plays fast is good. More like your assuming anything fast is shit.

  • was this ever officially released?

  • Zappa just bent you over and anally raped you, Vai.

  • Nice to see Steve Vai showing his respect to Bet Lynch of Coronation Street by wearing one of her blouses. :)

  • What the hell is Vai wearing? I know it's the 80's, but really?

  • @MrXtyne

have you seen satriani's outfits? ;D check joe live in the '88 montreaux jazz ^^ this is NOTHING.

  • amazing.... Vai got much from zappa ideas and moods .... yet zappa is much much more experienced and crazy to go anywhere, and that vai has not made happen... stop metal shit and move more and more to crazy atonal all crazy revolutionaty conceptual stuff... but zappa is far beyond musically in THIS video. far beyond and not playing as much notes per second...

  • @TubeSpoker Dude, Vai took his playing into a completely different direction than Zappa...and playing notes fast? Have you ever listen to Vai, check yourself before you make a stupid ass comment on youtube. I love Zappa to death and same with Vai, they are both amazing guitar players.

  • @TubeSpoker

zappa was indeed conceptual, but nothing he made was really atonal. his entire solo for example, is in major.

  • @TommittajaFIN Excuse me, have you ever listened to the Guitar albums?

  • @MarcBeckK

nope, I'm trying to sound smart, while still having only heard a fraction of zappa's music. works quite well, but not really at all I think.

  • @TommittajaFIN There's some pretty atonal stuff on The Grand Wazoo. And on Guitar he's mixing Stravinsky and Iron butterfly in his own music, and some of the tracks on there gets really atonal.

  • @MarcBeckK

well I think I'll check it out then later... :oo

  • The 2 people who disliked this, OMFG, are you on crack? Go back and listen to your Brittney spears and Justin Beiber. For the love of God!

  • 鬱々とした気分に喝を入れろ!! Frank Zappa & Steve Vaiの脳内蹂躙プレイ!!

Thank you for uploding This !!

  • For the first time ever I will express my thoughts with this drivel of the social network age... OMG!

  • actually frank got the spanking on this one!!!

  • steve vai so young and hilarious!!!

  • Frank had a unique sound. I liked it. Listened to him almost everyday in the early 70's 8-)

  • this si absolutely amazing footage awesome

  • amazing video

  • Zappa was the man.

There are musicians....an there are MUSICIANS.

He was fucking shining, he was worth a thousand musicians.

    And still...he is.

The Vai/Zappa-thing is like Luke and Obi-Wan...the master may be dead, buy he will always be THE MASTER! :D

  • @MrUberkraken Neither is my cup of tea, but I prefer listening to Zappa's solo than Vai's. It may be less complicated, but it's more melodic, which means so much more to me.

  • Like two cats. For me this is the one of the most boring guitar performances ever.

  • @donDonau Well said, two cats! I do think Zappa's solo is more melodic, but you're right- flash overload.

  • You know I think they played really well together here. I have a huge amount of respect for Vai though I'm not a massive fan of most of his music, per se. I think I enjoy watching him play with Zappa more than in any other setting. There's just something about Zappa, though, and it's not just his demeanor or using the cigarette as a kind of prop. His phrasing is just so interesting and unique. Vai is a 'player's player'. His playing has never stood out to me beyond the technicality of it.

  • @11jupitercowboy8 thats exactly why zappa is the best ever.

  • Zappa riesce ad essere un tantin più "melodico" di Steve e vince ai punti. Però che accoppiata STREPITOSA !!!

  • Comment removed

  • man I wish I could have seen zappa live.

  • my favorite solo of Zappa,i like zappa more and more,I guess i had to grow to appriciate his music, but that aside i always adored FZ,the way he talked, the way he was looking at the world, his grimaces were just so familiar to me.I can¨t think of him other then my brother or something, friends call me Zappa,i guess for a reason...

  • NEED MORE COWBELL!!!!

  • Stupid question

Is This Version of Stevies Spankin on You Cant Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 4 ?

  • Part of Vai's stunt guitar chair - sound just like Frank. He succeeded. The duel starting around 5:30 - close your eyes and tell me who is who. Frank was a god musician - Vai is a god guitarist.

  • una maravilla absoluta

  • 2:09 he was totally about to do that thing with his hair

  • hahha look at vai.. tryin to get sexy at the audience.. aint no surprise.. ahahhaha @ around 6.45.. and past.. vais fuckin face... like.. ohh u like that? you werent expecting that were u.. ohh yeaaa..

  • Amazing!!!

  • Read his auto biography if you get the chance. It's fascinating.

  • Steve Vai was about 22 and Frank was about 42. Amazing talents.

  • WTF, ALL I SEE OF FRANK ZAPPA IS COVERS?! I CANT LEARN ANYTHING ABOUT HIM ON YOUTUBE!!!!! WAS HE THAT BAD????

  • @Imba1337 He was one of the most innovative musicians of all time, look up the album Hot Rats for a taste

  • NICE

  • its weird seeing steve vai play before he signed with ibanez

  • Vai continues to compose stuff in Zappa's style. If you listen some "new" Vai album it seems to listen Zappa. Same scales, armony, melodies

  • I can honestly say my mind is now blown.

  • Mind blown!!

  • vai is franks bitch.

  • @neils68 yep, Vai does ok, and Zappa's all "ok kid, lets see what you can do" then he comes back in and fucking slays him.

  • zappa using a fender? i thought he only used the SG?

  • @neils68 Nope. There are quite a few live recordings of him using a Strat.

Depends entirely on the tone he wants and the song he's playing. :)

  • @TheRamtin Dude, zappa could make a guitar from a broom and mave more tone than almost anyone.

  • @neils68 David Gilmour. ;)

I still maintain that he has the best tone.

    But Zappa's pretty damn close.

  • I got say, Steve Vai in the Daisy Dukes is freaking me out!

  • Frank sounded so much better on a strat.

  • best youtube video ever..

  • 2 monstruos 2! WOW!!

  • Outstanding! Miss you Frank!

  • I love steve and everything. But, I think it's very obvious that Frank has much more tasteful phrasing. :P

  • Zappa is neither jewish nor atheist : he was a GOD !

  • Which guitar is Steve Vai playing ?

  • @BrianSteps94 ..i think its a stratocastor

  • Also it's useless to compare Zappa with Vai. They are different but Zappa was much more than his guitar skills. Zappa was about the way he put his cigar on the guitar, the way he made fun of every aspect of decent attitude, the way he would give his hand to fans during a solo, the way he stood up to PMRC, the way he had serious political views that were ahead of his time. Zappa was much more than music and his versatility to every aspect of social life is deeply missed from todays society.

  • @haradwatch

Your Zappa Fan heartwarming comment deserves another 18 Thumbs ups

but i can only give you 1

  • @haradwatch Useless or not, whenever two musicians trade solos onstage, they are asking to be compared to each other, or at least they know they will be compared to each other.

  • @haradwatch doesnt matter steves part is guitar gymnastics, thats why he eventually became the devils gtr player in crossroads....

  • @haradwatch still should be called franks spankin....

  • First, Frank was born in Baltimore from an Italian father with Greek-Lebanese roots and a mother also from Italy with French roots. Also thinking his thoughts about organized religions, I would suspect he was and agnostic or even atheist, but that's just speculation.

  • Frank's guitar is smoking a cigarette!

  • frank wearing a suit looks like borat.

  • We miss you Frank!!

  • vynikajici

  • Seeing Steve Vai in shorts makes Me nervous lol

  • 1:22 - 1:27 kills me everytime, so simple but just the perfect notes. Zappa was armenian or something I think, although it does sound like an italian name.

  • Damn!!!!

  • This is what Heaven must sound like. I am however intrigued by the Alexandra Burke link. What AB fan would wander across an FZ link...and what FZ fan would want to hear AB's soul-less version of Hallelujah?

  • Fukin eh!!! That was awesome!!!

  • Ero presente, una giornata caldissima, i cancelli aperti dalle ore 15:00. Il soundcheck con Tommy Mars ripreso più volte dal maestro durante le prove di Sofà (credo). Zappa for ever.

  • bei tempi....il 10 luglio a roma e il 17 a napoli per i rolling stones, avevo 22 anni

  • Frank breaks a string at 2:54 and keeps wailing on with the remaining five. Totally awesome!

The man could also rock a pair of parachute pants as well.

  • I've tried three others and they all sound like TOTAL shit, Thanks for know how to post.

  • ..ed ero pure contento perchè tre giorni prima avevo conosciuto una ragazza ......che credevo.......pazienza!!!

  • Kinda Neat-O, Kinda WOW!

  • Vai play that solo almost note for note like the one on "You cant do that on stage anymore" (The blue one).

    Stygge ulv->Me too..:)

  • @Nevigo thats because its the same one used on the cd

  • The Best of The Best R.I.P Frank Zappa 1993 We miss You And Thank You Concert here in Copenhagen 1982 i was there <3

  • this isn't a disrespectful comment, I'm a huge Zappa fan, and Steve is as good as they come, but there's a bit in that vid where it definitely looks like 2 guys with their cocks out wanking. allbeit very large ones!

    tremendous solo though.

  • Borat got skills

  • frank was insane. video is sick

  • i was just 4......WTF!!

  • I was there... It was a wonderful night!

  • @latoucheserge ..i was there too..!! :-)

  • @haldoc YOU BOTH ARE FRIGGIN LUCKY AS HELL!!!!

  • @haldoc im only 2 years old but i was there too.. front stage!!!>.. i think vai needed some longer shorts.. whatta u think?..

  • Comment removed

  • @haldoc io pure, però cazzo farlo all'ex mattatoio.... classica organizzazione all'italiana

  • Don't think Zappy is jewish. I believe he's got some Italian in him: Catholic

  • i dont think so, i thought he was greek or something. i think people just say that because of his nose.

  • Zappa is a typical italian surname

  • @haldoc zappa is a greek surname.there are many in my city too.frank's mother was half italin half french and his father half arab half greek.that's were the name zappa came from.and i also believe that he was inspired by the greek rhythm for example 7\8 or 5\8 and also 11\8 are very common greek and arab rhythms.:)

frank zappa was one of the biggest musician of 20th century that discover new thing.that very important.and also steve is my favourite guitarist(alive)

  • @haldoc volevo sapere se oltre a questo c'era qualche altro video

  • saw him 5 times always great, never the same

  • @MisterDensity Yes, his parents were italians, from calabria. Anyway, one of the most spectacular jam of all time, Frank was amazing, and steve too!

  • @MrMarcolaus Frank's family is from Partinico a little place in Sicily...he was Italian!

  • @Sustiene Yes man, you're right, his father was from Partinico, but he was born in Baltimora.

  • @Sustiene verissimo

  • @MisterDensity

    and also Vai ;)

  • @MisterDensity Frank Zappa was like the people from system of a Down: Armenian. they are typically Muslim; frank was agnostic

  • @MisterDensity Italian yes, catholic...no!! XD XD

  • @MisterDensity He wasn't religious.

  • @MisterDensity

You people are confusing religion for ethnicity. You can choose a religion regardless of ethnicitiy. So saying he was Italian which made him Catholic or Armenian which are typically Muslim, quite honestly, retarded. I am an Atheist now, but tomorrow I could be Buddhist. That is the good thing about religion: It is not a permanent choice unless you make it one.

  • @MisterDensity he was 1/2 italian 1/2 greek

  • @MisterDensity Frank Zappa Italian, Greek and Lebonese

  • @MisterDensity I'm pretty sure that I read in a biography that he's part Arab/part Greek but his family lived in Italy.

  • OMG, just listen to Zappa jam!
