I would guess that CR shortened his telomeres because in the modern day of toxins and pollutants (electromagnetic radiation especially) in the environment, calories kind of protect you and offset the effects rather than if they were battering your nutrition-less body. Although eating a lot of processed white sugars probably has the opposite effect.
To me, a young looking face means young looking guts and gizzards. It bugs me that the CR guy is said to be starving. He might not feel hungry at all. He looked to be eating the raw food diet. I never feel hungry, except in the morning after a daily 16 hour dry fast.. Other diets may make your butt smaller, but they don't make you look younger. Only raw CR can do that.
It could be artificial in many health obsessed people. Someone who cares more about their health and maintaining youthful appearance is probably far more likely to be using face moisturizing products and other methods such as sun avoidance compared to someone that doesn't even care which can stop drying and aging of the skin; it won't stop your internal organs from aging, though...
@calidude512 I agree that those willing to go CR, are likely taking care of themselves in other ways too. But from my own experience, after a few months on the raw food diet (which I use as CR), my pores tightened up dramatically, and face lifted so that I didn't look so old. The body puts all nutrition and detoxing in the liver, heart and lungs first. So for my outside to look so much younger, that means my organs looked became younger first.
I think also it has been suggested that exercise on a higher caloric diet but nutrient dense has the same if not better results. Also it is not suggested for the young or naturally very lean people or women in their child bearing years as it couold result in the loss of their menstrual cycle or infertility and this could lead to early osteoporosis. Its interesting that most croners seem to be men and the women looked aged
This is purely anicdotal however most pioneers of CR who have reached the age where it might make a difference Roy Walford died ofLou Gehrigs at a normal age his daughter LOOKS VERY very OLD for her age completely unscientific the other thing is very few people die from old age it does not work like that they die from disease or weakness there is little evidence this works in large organisms
The way to actually test the telomere length would have been by testing his telomere length before he started the calorie restriction diet and then taking another 30 years later, His skin looks healthier and body mass is in the low 19s or 18s but, hypotheticaly does this prove that if david was not doing calorie restriction his telomeres would be even shorter than they are compared to a person who doesn't do calorie restriction at all?does a vitamin anitioxidant diet have a impact on telomeres?
matthewlake182, very interesting channel, I've a simple question, do you think is healthy do a calorie restriction diet at any age? (I'm very young now, I'm 22 years old)
CR is an attractive lifestyle for a certain "geeky" kind of people, who love to think they can, through a diet manipulation, control their health almost completely. It also possesses an intuitive quality (less wear-and-tear from free radicals, longer life). However, when carefully examined , CR reveals itself as a bit of pseudo-science with sectarian overtones. Check out the link below for explanation why.
david might have shorter telomeres, but healthier cells (less lipofuscin, AGEs etc.), so the rate of shortening will be slower becasue no proliferation is needed to replace the demaged cells (besides the possibility of shorter telomers a priori)
They talk on here like 1700 calories a day is some sort of hell. It's very doable. I also suspect that most people overestimate the number of Calories they can eat. I am 6'0 male 194 pounds, who works in an office all day. I keep hearing people say I can eat 2000 calories a day. Thats nonsense. If I eat 2000 calories I will slowly gain weight. I am currently on a diet of 1000 calories a day, so I am obviously losing weight, but 1700 a day would suit me fine (these guys are not even my height)
@wickedtothemisty i agree , 2000 calorie myth is what is keeping ppl fat, forcing themselves to eat when they can maintain or even lose with 1000 calories a day.
I have a BMI of 18-19. I don't think I would last more than a day or two, trying to eat much fewer calories than I do. Somebody told me that I looked fantastically young for my age, 50. I guess what I do is mild calorie restriction, and I try to eat right - tons of veg's, lowfat, low-protein, almost-vegan. But I'm not going hungry, just eating light. Most of the CR people are guys; a woman can't get as thin healthily as a guy, I think.
Telomere length is not expected to be something that energy restriction has a positive effect on - AFAIK. People don't normally die because they run out of telomeres.
My own body temperature drops to about 35.3 in the night/morning and I don't find it a problem. I feel more comfortable at a lower bt than a higher one.
a) he might have been born with shorter telomeres b) Telomere length isn't that straigth forward c) There can be a 30x difference and show no correlation with age of death. d) People with initial higher telomere length have a more rapid shortening.

A low calorie diet is clearly antiaging, Dave Fisher looks better than many people at his age. But carefull, to much restriction is unhealth.

Ignoring the most important point..
How does he work and deal with stress?

A Guardian article 4 years prior to this video said Dave was 5' 10" and 147 lbs

I'm sure it makes a big difference in what the diet consists of (ie. a CR vegan or a CR standard american diet eater)

David Fisher states that cold really affects him on a severe
CR diet and has to wear long johns to keep warm! One has
to wonder what other side effects he hasn't disclosed.
Oh, this is so good - The non-CR guy has longer telomeres!

You don't have to defend him or any other CR person
at every opportunity.
Commenting about another persons health is a rather slippery slope. You don't know the guy personally
and I'm pretty sure you're not his doctor either.
He might have been born with shorter telomeres
but that would be pure speculation. Maybe he was,
maybe he wasn't.
