Being Vegan is actually incredibly simple once you know what products to avoid, then you don't even think about it anymore. You still get people who can't understand it and who enjoy asking dumb questions and trying to make fun of you...I assume this is because people feel like their morality is being challenged. I personally don't care what other people do or don't do. Seems like this 10th rate comedian has found an easy and uncontroversial minority to pick on. Verdict: Harmless but annoying.

I feel like it is a far better position to avoid violence or causing harm in every way that I possibly can (which is a lot of ways.) It is part of life that we will accidentally step on ants (though we may try to avoid them) and all of the other ways that living beings are harmed. I do what I can to make the world a better place for all of the species that live here. :-)

I second another poster: there's nothing unvegan about gluten. Some people avoid gluten, and some of those people happen to be vegan. That's the only connection.

@5hane5hane5hane It's not necessarily that we like telling people. Occasionally I do enjoy it. Other times I don't, though, as it certainly puts the spotlight on me, and I don't always want to be in the spotlight, haha. However, sometimes we need to tell people for our own sake (so we'll have something to eat at a function, for instance), other times we feel we need to spread the message (that it's healthy, that it's delicious, etc...).

@CrynOut North American Oreos are acceptable for vegans who consume sugar. UK ones are not, as they contain whey powder.

Some (fairly strict) vegans avoid sugar because it can be processed with bone char. This means that its production involves animal products, and it can contain trace amounts of bone in it. I am what most people would consider a strict vegan, but I do not concern myself too much with the whole sugar thing. We don't eat much, but mainly because it's not the healthiest thing.

@kimberlily1983 I use unprocessed brown sugar. It's just as sweet as processed but looks lumpier as if it's gone damp and stuck together. You can also use agave or depending on what you're making, sweet fruits.

Also, since going vegan over 3 years ago, because I read up on nutrition (due to everyone trying to convince me it's unhealthy), I eat a lot healthier than when I was vegetarian.

@CrynOut But yeah, other than that, from what I understand, Oreos are vegan. There's also a kind of cream cheese frosting that's vegan (Betty Crocker, maybe? I can't remember - check the ingredients list!), believe it or not. Just goes to show how artificial most food people eat is. In this case I think it's a good thing, though, haha.

@CrynOut I perhaps posted too quickly. I was sure they contained cocoa, not chocolate. It seems at least some of their OREO products contain both, according to the Nabisco site, with chocolate being the last on the list of ingredients. So now the question is: is it dark chocolate minus any whey, etc. or is it regular milk chocolate?

Gluten is allergenic, plus there are another health conditions that require cutting gluten out of one diet.. Plus gluten itself is mean mostly in faux meats in large amounts. So, some vegans will avoid it. But technically speaking it is vegan.
