The creator Hideki Kamiya says the Joy-fighting scene is metaphorical for the ever-present struggle between women. They always think of the other as an enemy (so Kamiya ) and check how the others look. They will feel more comfotable amoung other women when they belive themselves to be more desireable. In this fight they look identical and they do not only fight but engage in a posing-battle to establish which one has the greater appeal.
