@Subiromba At times Mansell could comfortably beat both of them, but he lacked consistently which Prost and Senna had, which ultimately is what separates the good from the great.
I love the Mansell and Senna battles, it's like an unstoppable force (Mansell) meets an immovable object (Senna). Truly fantastic stuff, makes me wish I was older so I could enjoy these great races.
im 13 and keep coming back to these videos. todays f1 is predicatable.... senna prost mansell anyone of these drivers have more tallent skall and balls than the most highly rated f1 driver today!
@jeanclaude780 most people are still crono centered,in other words, the drivers/sportsmen of their era are always the best..they never look back to evaluate how great some people were. This is why you will get people nowadays saying Vettel is better than senna, or people saying senna was better than Fangio.Personally I admire the number of poles Ayrton Senna was able to get with a Lotus, which i compare with someone being able to get poles with a Mercedes in 2011..but that's just me
@jeanclaude780 Legends too, but from completely different era....Senna, Mansell, Piquet and Prost were all from the same era, the cars were very different and so was F1 in general, when it came to media, the popularity of the sport and so on.....Clark, Stewart and Fangio are all legends, but people still people talk about them in different ocation.
I remember the days when an engine manufacturer could rev the nuts off their engines and have the choice of 8, 10 or 12 cylinders! Anyone remember Lamborghini bolting grenades into their cars at Adelaide during Quali?
Senna always showed a lot of respect to Nigel, he knew that Mansell was a beast, was the most difficult equal because of his determination, Prost was always more quiet than Mansell .
I remember this race well. The Williams was clearly the faster car but Senna did his usual banzai in qualifying to put the cat amongst the pigeons, and Mansell ran slightly too much wing which made it tough for him to overtake Senna. Mansell actually let Patrese pass earlier and he was able to take Aryton without too much problem, but spun off while leading, so this was a pass for the lead.
Regardless, Senna the Williams was just too unreliable that season. The next, however..
Today's F1, with goofy looking wings on the cars and drivers still in diapers, is a joke compared to the heydays of the 80s and 90s.
I try to watch contemporary F1 today but it simply cannot hold my interest. Yet I keep going back to old VCR tapes and YouTube videos to watch the same old classic races over and over again, and keep coming back for more.
I am so grateful that I was able to witness these old races live, as they happened.
The video quality has gone iffy on a couple of tapes, but I've long since backed them all up to DVDs and put them away in storage. My grandkids (when I have some. I'm not even a dad yet) should get a kick out of them when they're old enough to understand what's going on. :)
Senna was still champion that year, and would have been next year except for that Williams built the greatest racing car of all time, the active-suspension FW14B, which allowed a 39 year old Mansell and a washed-up Alain Prost to win championships.
@81broncoman The Williams was actually a better car than the McLaren in '91, once they got all the bugs worked out. If anyone but Ayrton Senna had been behind the wheel of the MP4/6, Mansell also would have won the '91 title even with all the issues early in the season.
Sometimes the cars make all the difference. Taking everything into account, Senna's most brilliant season was 1993, but he was down 60 horses to Prost every race. All Alain had to do was not mess it up.
@Freeleacher so say your mother was dead, or grandmother, it would be alright for me to spit on her grave because she's just a woman? no, that's called disrespect. you do realize that senna died because of an accident out of his control, don't you? how does that make him a worse driver? may i ask, how old are you?
This was great race of Mansell, great tactics, he let Patrese and Senna fighting then attacked Senna in the topic moment without take so many risks. Great champion
@Freeleacher wow. talk about being disrespectul and downright stupid. that's like saying if someone was the fastest man in the world, he had the 100m sprinting record; then goes into retirement. does that mean he was not the fastest man in the world, because hes retired? your logic is truly flawed.
Even though McLaren-Honda won the drivers & constructors championship in 1991 (mostly due to Senna's genius), the Williams-Renault package was completely superior in every sense. This would culminate in the domination by Nigel Mansell in 1992.
@Audioquest56 Indeed, the 1992 car was too superior for Senna to make a difference. Don't get me wrong, I don't take Mansell's credit, but in the end the driver with the best car is most likely to win, yes? With some exceptions, of course... Anyway, Mansell was great in 1991 and 1992, he was the right driver for the FW14.
Senna did the fastest lap in these race [1'26.061] but the Williams was a good car, and Honda knows that finally, Williams-Renault was ahead. Lion Mansell was a extraordinary driver and a huge rival for Ayrton, the best of all the times. I enjoy the very clean battles between this two. Senna does not close the door against him. And Mansell did a very good overtaking.
Its not special Hard to be better than the others if you are the only one Profi under Amateurs, Senna startet in an Age of 4 Jears with Motorsport, the other Drivers in the 80s, startet in an Age about 16-20 with Motorsport, Gerhard Berger was in an Age of 17 Jears the first time on an Racetrack...
Prost and Mansell was the only with Senna who startet as Children with Motorsport.
So its not Special Hard to be fast, with Amatuers in the rest of the field.

Schumacher came and broke all of this. He needed only 1 year to be the best after the super williams renault in 1992. and he needed another year, just until the start of 1994, to be better than any williams renault, driven even by Senna. And remember even in some races of 1993 he was a real danger for the super williams renault! Spa, Portugal, Monza...
The FW14 of 1991 really got it's act together when the gearbox stopped exploding, a real great Grand Prix car and great drivers..Mansell/Patrese, the good old days.
Senna's tyres were shot to pieces by this time in the race. Patrese had been attacking Senna from the start and Senna had used them up trying to defend against him, so when Nigel came up behind Senna he had little to defend against him.
He did the pole in these race.Yes, Senna's tires was near off. When was for sting he remerge in 5th place, did the fast run but he has not time to catch the Williams of Nigel and was near 16s behind him. God race for both.
I thought that was what you meant. Easy to make typing errors like that ay, Lol! That, and you'd have to be crazy to suggest the McLaren was better than the Williams that year. From 1991 to 1997 it really was the dominant car. Shame the drivers couldn't always live up to it's true potential!
@xpandia if so how did schumacher beat the williams for w2 titles in 94 and 95 even whenw illiams were better if u ask me schmacher ismore skilled than senna by a mile top 5 1) schumacher 2) fangio 3) prost 4) senna 5) mansell
He he really showed how much more skilled he was when he had the better engine from FORD in 1993 and could even stay close to Senna. He was real skilled trying to hold a half ass like Hill off in Australia. You don't know what your talking about, he can't even hold off Nico Rosberg.
@dalebshelton yeah and senna really showed his skilled by getting 41 wins and 65 poles poles don't mean jack shit wins do if its anything senna lost the lead alot schumacher was just too good and people hated him cause he was just too fast in his prime
@dojOdRiFTeR Yeah he was real impressive beating Barrachello and Irvine for 10 years. No one gives a fuck how many wins he had, he was a pussy because he was scare to have a decent team mate battle him. Thats why no one gives a fuck if he would have won 161 races, for what he had under the hood he should have won 10 titles. Why don't you go play with your faggot drifting friends and leave the real racing for people who know aht the fuck they are talking about ok kid?
@dalebshelton hAKKINEN HAD THE BEST CAR IN 2000 YET SCHUMACHER OWNED HIS 2X FLUKE ASS NOT TO MENTION 1999 HAKNNEN GOT break that schumi broke his leg in 1998 schumi was faster than don't gimma this shit senna was outpaced by schumi in 1994 1993 he raped senna with a shit car senna remember people 41 wins to 65 poles thus he lost the lead thats enought to prove senna wasn't good beside poles isn't wins nor is it titles senna 41 wins / 65 poles
@dojOdRiFTeR shut the fuck up every time he gets his ass kick all you fan boys claims his car sucked, if he wins it was all him...Who cares if Senna only won 41....his 41 was worth more spectacular than Schueys' 91. Don't give me this Hakkinen had a better car shit. He got his ass kicked by one of the most passive un aggresive drivers in the history of the sport.
@dojOdRiFTeR Stats are for idiots like you who never actually watch and undertand the sport, go play with your fucking Toyota spinning your wheel doing some bullshit you fags call drifting. That is not motor racing, its for idiots that don't get it
@dalebshelton stats thAT R THAT FAR APART MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE THAT EXACTLY WAT I THOUGH SENNA YES HE WAS A BETTER HUMAN BEING AKA SPA 1992 I GIVE HIM CREDIT FOR THAT BUT BASED FOR RAW SPEED SCHUMACHER IS IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE
@dojOdRiFTeR Look,,,like I always say..I don't go to Schuey fan sites trying to convince you guys Senna is better..so Don't fucking come to a Senna fan site trying to convince me that Schumacher is better..All I know is this Head to Head...Shcuemacher didn't a single pole..won only 4 races while Senna was alive...Based on raw speed your right..Shuemacher is in a different league than Senna...Senna's pole ratio to races raced is untouched. Senna was leading a lot of races when he car failed
@dojOdRiFTeR If Schumacher would have just allowed one top end driver into Ferrari for a fair competition, then his respect level would have been elevated. DId you watch any of Senna's racing , live,,,been there at the moment when it happened..against Prost? If he was so damn fast why couldn't he make up a small speed differential in 2005 to win a race (full grid). Schumacher has to have everything going for him to win...Senna doesn't. You want stats?
@dojOdRiFTeR Look at the speed differential in qualifying that Senna was able to overcome to win 8 races between 1992 and 1993 compared to the Williams. You take a car that was designed to be driven by computers and expect a man to control it somehting bad was gonna happen...that's why he was Killed in 1994. You think Shuey is faster...go for it...but if you come to a Senna site..I'll straighten you out........No one cares about his records OK....No one.
@flipsidedogchop Senna vetoed derek warwick as a team mate. He couldnt veto prost as he was there first. Senna was just as dominant within McLaren as Schumacher was. He got all the best bits first, he got all the strategy preference, he got everything. So did Schumacher but i would suggest that Rubens was a far superior driver to Berger or Andretti.
Senna was the same in 1989 there was a Big Trouble in McLaren, and Senna said:
"One must go, if Prost dont leave the Team so i will Leave"
And in 1993 Senna coul get to Williams, but as Senna heared that Prost gonna be hes Team Mate in 1993 he dont want to go to Williams, so Williams take Damon Hill...
Next time maybe prove your Facts before you try to telling Bullshit ; )
Watch the 1992 review, senna say that "prost has a contract, it has a veto for me to drive. Its seems he doesnt want to compete against me in the same car cos he knows with the same car, its tough to beat me. Hes gotta have a different car"
Unless you think that was someone impersonating senna.
Your level of dillusion almost matches North Koreas!!
Actually you're wrong. prost DID veto Senna in 1993. It pops up in several records as well as Nigel mansell's autobiography. Prost was a good driver but he won his world titles through behind the scenes politics. he used his relationship with Renault and Elf to force Mansell out of Williams and did the same thing to him during his their time at Ferrari. Alain Prost was the reason Mansell left F1 after the 92 season
For the first 3 races of 1991, the Williams Renault suffered from massive unreliability of their new semi-automatic gearbox, just as Ferrari suffered in 1989 and the first part of 1990. But once that was sorted out, the Williams Renault was the car to have.
@Subiromba At times Mansell could comfortably beat both of them, but he lacked consistently which Prost and Senna had, which ultimately is what separates the good from the great.

@dalebshelton hAKKINEN HAD THE BEST CAR IN 2000 YET SCHUMACHER OWNED HIS 2X FLUKE ASS NOT TO MENTION 1999 HAKNNEN GOT break that schumi broke his leg in 1998 schumi was faster than don't gimma this shit senna was outpaced by schumi in 1994 1993 he raped senna with a shit car senna remember people 41 wins to 65 poles thus he lost the lead thats enought to prove senna wasn't good beside poles isn't wins nor is it titles senna 41 wins / 65 poles
schumacher rapes sennas stats
dojOdRiFTeR 1 year ago
@dojOdRiFTeR shut the fuck up every time he gets his ass kick all you fan boys claims his car sucked, if he wins it was all him...Who cares if Senna only won 41....his 41 was worth more spectacular than Schueys' 91. Don't give me this Hakkinen had a better car shit. He got his ass kicked by one of the most passive un aggresive drivers in the history of the sport.
dalebshelton 1 year ago
@dojOdRiFTeR Stats are for idiots like you who never actually watch and undertand the sport, go play with your fucking Toyota spinning your wheel doing some bullshit you fags call drifting. That is not motor racing, its for idiots that don't get it
dalebshelton 1 year ago
@dalebshelton stats thAT R THAT FAR APART MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE THAT EXACTLY WAT I THOUGH SENNA YES HE WAS A BETTER HUMAN BEING AKA SPA 1992 I GIVE HIM CREDIT FOR THAT BUT BASED FOR RAW SPEED SCHUMACHER IS IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE
dojOdRiFTeR 1 year ago
@dojOdRiFTeR Look,,,like I always say..I don't go to Schuey fan sites trying to convince you guys Senna is better..so Don't fucking come to a Senna fan site trying to convince me that Schumacher is better..All I know is this Head to Head...Shcuemacher didn't a single pole..won only 4 races while Senna was alive...Based on raw speed your right..Shuemacher is in a different league than Senna...Senna's pole ratio to races raced is untouched. Senna was leading a lot of races when he car failed
dalebshelton 1 year ago
@dojOdRiFTeR If Schumacher would have just allowed one top end driver into Ferrari for a fair competition, then his respect level would have been elevated. DId you watch any of Senna's racing , live,,,been there at the moment when it happened..against Prost? If he was so damn fast why couldn't he make up a small speed differential in 2005 to win a race (full grid). Schumacher has to have everything going for him to win...Senna doesn't. You want stats?
dalebshelton 1 year ago
@dojOdRiFTeR Look at the speed differential in qualifying that Senna was able to overcome to win 8 races between 1992 and 1993 compared to the Williams. You take a car that was designed to be driven by computers and expect a man to control it somehting bad was gonna happen...that's why he was Killed in 1994. You think Shuey is faster...go for it...but if you come to a Senna site..I'll straighten you out........No one cares about his records OK....No one.

@dojOdRiFTeR So in Saying that..>Schumacher's league...is about 3 below Senna's

@dojOdRiFTeR schumi was good but because he never wanted to be seriously challenged by his teammates, he will never be a great!

@flipsidedogchop

@kallo182 Prost vetoed Senna in 1993...... & Senna offered to drive for nothing too!!!
Next time maybe only comment on things you know about instead of fabricating bullshit!

@kallo182 Hahahaha, Your a fucking retard!
Watch the 1992 review, senna say that "prost has a contract, it has a veto for me to drive. Its seems he doesnt want to compete against me in the same car cos he knows with the same car, its tough to beat me. Hes gotta have a different car"
Unless you think that was someone impersonating senna.
Your level of dillusion almost matches North Koreas!!
flipsidedogchop 1 year ago
@kallo182
Alain Prost was the reason Mansell left F1 after the 92 season
chrismarkbicknell 11 months ago
For the first 3 races of 1991, the Williams Renault suffered from massive unreliability of their new semi-automatic gearbox, just as Ferrari suffered in 1989 and the first part of 1990. But once that was sorted out, the Williams Renault was the car to have.
