At Harvard I would be taught the political thought of Marsilius of Padua by a PhD student in a seminar.
Here, at Cambridge, I just came out of an hour-long one-on-one lesson with the academic who translated Marsilius from Latin into English in the first place.

@8bobthebuilder Your personal statement and reference, and then your interview. Most people who apply are invited for interview, and it seems to be the most important step in getting a place.
Straight A's at A-level is a minimum, you also need to write a good enough personal statement, and then impress the interviewers.

Haha can't address any points directly can you, just repeat the same dogma about lists, despite the flaws (e.g. we have proportionally far more slots) and this being a debate about teaching, not research (which is all about money as al says). i know Alasdair - he was at Oxford - and my sister's at Cambridge right now. we know what we're talking about. you're the one ranting, pal, the usual jingoistic crap from a chippy american illuminating his own insularity from and ignorance of the world.
Too bad Cambridge is still not the best university in the world. According to the THES World Rankings, Harvard University continuously outranks Cambridge in prestige and in academics.
Moreover, Ivy League schools and American universities are better than their British counterparts year after year. 7 out of the top 11 schools in the world are American. Point taken.
Simplistic. However keen you are on tables, you can't really apply them in appraisals of prestige. Ask anyone, anywhere on Earth, which is the world's most prestigious university, & they will tell you it's Oxford. Among tables, Harvard leads largely due to money - its endowment is larger than all the UK universities combined, a result being around 1/4 of Harvard professors are visiting UK academics chasing better pay & research grants. Actual teaching at Oxford & Cambridge is far more effective.
That's not to say the money aspect negates an institution's achievements, but that Harvard ranks so highly because of the sheer amount of academic research it carries out - the only place that can afford to undertake such levels. Assessments of teaching at Harvard are consistently withering as compared to Oxbridge, who dedicate huge focus to individual tutelage as well as seminars and lectures; Harvard nurtures very little individual contact, teaching through faceless lectures of over 100 people
To A;aisdar: The fact is, there are more Ivy League schools than any British university on the THES list. We recruit students from around the world, England being an extremely small proportion. America produces more engineers per capita than any other country in the world-- MIT being the foremost in the world. Harvard indeed has a better education than Cambridge. It's a fact. It's got more money, and it can lure better scholars and professors than Oxbridge can. Deal with it.
Again, you have a simplistic understanding of how these things work. a)America is far bigger than the UK and has more universities; proportionally, there are more from the UK in the top 10 you've such faith in - 4. b)My point was on the quality of teaching methods at Oxbridge over Harvard: intensive individual tutoring and seminars as well as the anonymous lectures Harvard largely limits itself to. THES look at a range of factors like research, where Harvard certainly does lead due to its wealth
So your weak assertion that Harvard 'has' a better education (you mean 'provides') than Cambridge is merely that - an assertion. It's well known in academic circles in America that a canny student will go to the Ivy league for facilities, and Oxbridge for regular face time with leading world experts. US universities simply aren't set up in the way that ours are - we are taught through conversation and debate with experts, rather than being supplied with a library card and invited to piss off
"We recruit students from around the world, England being an extremely small proportion"

Univ of Penn, biggest and best business school in the world. Ask any young student from India where they'd want to go to school. They'd pick an Invy League school over Oxbridge. they cannot compete wirh an Ivy League school. Simple fact.
That's crap Nate, I have actually been to India (I'd bet anything you haven't) and way more people revere Oxford and Cambridge in Asia than have even heard of Harvard and the other Ivy Leaguers. Oxbridge just have a much more international reputation and a British education is much more sought after and respected outside the US. You're clearly just another indoctrinated cultist, thinking America is always best because that's the overly patriotic bullshit propaganda you've grown up around. Cringe
To [isswot: Th4e numbers speak for themselves. There are more American universities on the QS THES list than british schools, a list which might I add was drawn up by your compatriots in your ocuntry.
The US produces more engineers per capita than any other country. The US also awards more bachelor degrees than any other country in the world. We've got a lot more resources than your little island.
Yeah and as Alasdair said numbers DON"T speak for themselves. way fewer universities here, yet we take up 40% of the table while being 1/38th the size of the USA. You never addressed his point about teaching methods being better here, probably because you don't really know what you're talking about, and he does. more bachelor degrees? MORE PEOPLE. Duh. MIT makes more engineers per capita>>>small university (1/2 size of Cambridge) that people mostly pick for physics etc, it has compulsory science
To pisswot: The fact remains, 7 of the top 11 best universities in the world, according to the THES are not British, they're American. And what's even more embarassing, a lot of them are not the equivalent to an Oxbridge or Ivy League degree. For instance the University of Chicago being a fine example..
To pisswot: Don't vent your anger onto me. Perhaps you should have a good rant with the London Times who complies this list annually. They've reliazed that a Harvard degree is more valuable than one from Cambridge.
Personally though, I prefer neither. Cambridge's tuition is way too cheap and Harvard is too polarized and inimidating. Stanford University is sufficient for my needs.
Oh and by the way Chicago is reknowned over here. Stanford was used by the Simpsons, masters of satire, as the archetypal uni that people go to who can't get into Ivy League. you really can't understand the meaninglessness of ranking lists can you.. tutoring is obviously better than echoing halls with no rapport. we get those to - but we get tutoring and classes as well. everyone in america knows the limits of harvard and their stale lectures with no student involvment
To pisswot: You know the UK really is a ridulous country, the leper colony and the 51 state of America. The education, the politics, government, the weather, and a classic obnoxious British attitude that you uphold really is a novelty to any American. In any consolation, the best thing we ever did for ourselves is throw the British yoke off 232 years ago to the date.
The education - Ha. You haven't managed to make a coherent case
The politics - theoretically yes, America has a much better and nobler system. the reality though is that your ignorant populace and money-worshipping society leads to things like george bush and halliburton in a way unthinkable over here: religion is not allowed into public life in the UK, unlike over there. All that stuff about separating church & state.. "under god"? "in god we trust"? "god told me to invade iraq"? Europe laughs
To pisswit: Unlike you, we actually have a seperation of church and state. And as for invasions, unlike Europe, we are not quitters and defeatists. I can;t possibly imagine swearing allegiance to an 82 year old woman who does nothing. Should have died years ago. Constitutional monarchy is a throw back to feudalism. But so is your incestuous peerage too.
Except we're not a religious cult of a country, unlike america. we stopped believing in fairies and elves a while ago. people can be gay etc and we don't care. the queen is a tourist attraction and something to put on coins - no-one gives a shit about her. her job is a formality. and the UK is the least defeatist modern country around - you couldn't even take the vietnamese without killing more of your own people than they did. we fought the wars mostly alone while you sold stuff to germany
To pisswit: That's because during WW2, we could have cared less about you. We intentionally sat back, laughed, and placed on bets on when Hitler would defeat you until we stepped in. But good on us, we bankrupted the UK and you were indebted to us for over 60 years.
What you mean to say is "we COULDN"T have cared less". What you said has the opposite meaning to what you think it does.. think about it for a moment. Ok, it might take longer than that. And your history is pitifully off, Hitler didn't lose because of America, he lost because of a combination of the Russian multitudes and impenetrability of the UK. We know you're fed a lot of propaganda in school - that you cracked the enigma code etc. You think saving private ryan was how it all happened. moron
Did your propaganda nightmare allow you to know that the meathead US strategy in iraq of just carpet bombing the country randomly made things much worse, and massive america had to come crawling to tiny UK for military expertise and tactics in the form of the Black Watch? and that the kurds would fight alongside us but wouldn't go within range of your guns because you famously just shoot at anything whether it's on your side or not, even your own uniformed troops? your army's a highly armed mess
To pisswit: Please, your country was completely broken finacially, morally, and militarily during WW2. People like my grandparents were taking bets on when you'd give up. But don't expect any favors in the future from us, because just as Americans (not the government) were apt to let you fall to fascism, we'd still be less prone today.
Financially, certainly, and militarily mostly, but as I said - and as someone who's studied this outside of 'patriotic' american textbooks and wikipedia - the Russians were by far the main reason hitler lost. I know that doesn't sit well with the american cult, but it's true. london is now back to being the financial capital of the world, with more american banks than in new york. by the way your third sentence actually means nothing, do you ever read books at all?
To pisswit: It's just like 911. Britain's corcodile tears and grieving was superficial in the aftermath of the attacks. Underneath the national anthem being played at Buckingham Palace, the church services, and the poltical and personal tributes, everyone over there was whispering to each other, "The Americans got what they deserved."
Even before the fire wasd put out, the French accused us of doing this to ourselves as a way to steal oil and to kill babies. I'd expect this lewd behavior.
Ever heard of operation northwoods? America is on file making plans to kill its own civillians and bomb its own assets as an excuse to invade cuba - the D o D and joint chiefs of staff all signed off on it, kennedy angrily forbade it.. then got shot through the throat and brain. 9/11 may not have been a hoax, but it's also possible that it was, and the fact that you dismiss what "the french" (a french author) said so automatically shows you're another patriotic automaton that can't be objective
I don't know where you get this idea that we thought you got what you deserved. we're your best friends - your only other 'friend' (or military outpost), Israel, openly despises you and cynically manipulates you. over here we like the America of the values it once espoused - the 18th century Enlightenment values of the philadelphia convention - but you've lost the way and are now like a blind, rabid, fearful, ignorant, deeply religious maniac with no understanding of the limits of his own power.
To pisswit: "We're your best friends." In your eyes maybe! That gave me a good chuckle.
It's none of Britain's concern about what we do in the world. If we want to bomb other countries, then we shall do so. War is a business in the United States just like health care, education, retail, etc. Everything is for profit.
So who do you think is your best friend? You've really dug yourself into a hole internationally - literally everyone except us thinks you're a rancid horde - and now the american bubble is bursting ahead of time.. that didn't take long did it. less than a century. not a great run. what do you think america's future holds with no friends and a plummeting economy? and how can you go in for all this Jesus stuff and still say such cadaverous war-relishing blackness as you just have? hypocrite
We thought ahead, and actually went from superpower to integrated member of the world. America has been acting like it'll keep the top spot forever. in fact it's going to be one of the shortest-lived empires of all time.
I suspect, like most christians and religious head-cases generally, you don't know much about your own ridiculous guide-book, or whatever the fucking thing is, and it's more just part of your 'identity'. You're 'all-american' (and you actually SAID that, deliciously enough), so therefore you're a christian. you just happen to worship filthy lucre, blaspheme your imaginary god through idolatrous flag-worship, hate and misconstrue foreigners, who you think should basically just die, etc. hypocrsiy
Anyway, I've had my fun. Argue with Alasdair if you want the civil angle on all this transatlantic culture shock. You emerge a bedraggled, pointless mess, none the wiser if only because you're entirely closed off to even faintly challenging perspectives. Keep saluting, you'll live to see the wake-up call bring your cult crashing down around you. In the meantime, spend, obey, spend, obey, spend, obey, spread the stultifying misinformation and stay firmly asleep. Your country likes you that way.
I know they tell you that you have separation of church and state, but you don't. It's on the money. It's in the pledge that you creepily make children chant at your cult flag in the morning (no-one in a civilised country has rows of flags about the place, in their gardens etc, it's so primitive). Bush is a religious leader making religious decisions for the nation. most of your politicians go on about god and sign off with "god bless america" etc.. not a whiff of that here. we grew the fuck up.
obnoxious attitude - actually we're a damn sight more cordial than your boorish, arrogant lot, but we get a little heated when dealing with uppity know-nothings who display misplaced arrogance.
basically our 'attitude' is why we have the most respected sense of humour on earth, and get to seduce literally any american we meet. there's a sort of clunking, humourless squareness about so many americans that leaves them in the dust conversationally
This video is really, really great. You did a fantastic job. Cambridge looks like such a good school. I want to go there so badly, but the school doesn't offer lots of financial aid to overseas students (I'm an American), thus it would be way too expensive to attend... :-/
If I were to apply, I'd apply for English, and if I got in it would cost my family 54,000 to 59,000 dollars for me to study there for 3 years (the course takes 3 years to complete). This isn't factoring in living expenses though, which would raise the total amount by quite a lot.
Maybe I messed up the numbers, but that's what I gathered. And that's just English. There are a number of courses that are more expensive to study.
The Universities in the UK are far cheaper, for equal if not better education. Im an American, Junior in High School, and looking at Univerisites. Most of the ones here at home will cost more than attending school in the UK. Unless you attend a State University and you live in the same state as such.
"Unless you attend a State University and you live in the same state as such"
Or if you attend a "top" school (Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, Duke, and so on). They usually offer really good financial aid to students, especially Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.
As far as better goes (education wise), it depends on what you're looking for; e.g., a liberal arts education, a specific program, etc.
and that is the only reson I think we should join the EU. wait, 60,000? I could probably afford that. If I work full time for almost two years and live with my parents... yeij! maybe not.
I hate EU. Why must they always make things so difficult for us? we are a part of europe too!
Depends on the exchange rate a bit. I met someone at interviews from the US who was applying to Cambridge because it would be cheaper, but that was in 2004. Now it's about $2 = £1 UK unis aren't so cheap for Americans.
You can't be serious! Why would you try and show off by saying you're a Cambridge student? Because if you were, you would bloody well know that there is no PPE at Cambridge! That's at Oxford
Descending down the UL South-Wing stairs from the 5th floor and going to the Tea Room is pretty much what my ENTIRE Cambridge experience would be lol!
I just graduated yesterday.. this video is a fabulous representation of Cambridge. So great to see a Cambridge video without romantic string music or Enya behind it. Thanks for posting this!
There's a bloke in Cambridge that I fell in love with...He's called James Ringer...I lost contact with him...If you ever find him...Please tell him I'm in LOVE with him.
When is Cambridge going to build a statue or dedicate a garden or park to Sam Baron. Also, why is he not called "Sir Sam Baron"? I mean if Elton John has the title after all...good knight then
what a nice experience

To pisswot: Don't vent your anger onto me. Perhaps you should have a good rant with the London Times who complies this list annually. They've reliazed that a Harvard degree is more valuable than one from Cambridge.
Personally though, I prefer neither. Cambridge's tuition is way too cheap and Harvard is too polarized and inimidating. Stanford University is sufficient for my needs.
YogaNate79 3 years ago

YogaNate79 3 years ago
The education - Ha. You haven't managed to make a coherent case
The politics - theoretically yes, America has a much better and nobler system. the reality though is that your ignorant populace and money-worshipping society leads to things like george bush and halliburton in a way unthinkable over here: religion is not allowed into public life in the UK, unlike over there. All that stuff about separating church & state.. "under god"? "in god we trust"? "god told me to invade iraq"? Europe laughs
pisswit 3 years ago
To pisswit: Unlike you, we actually have a seperation of church and state. And as for invasions, unlike Europe, we are not quitters and defeatists. I can;t possibly imagine swearing allegiance to an 82 year old woman who does nothing. Should have died years ago. Constitutional monarchy is a throw back to feudalism. But so is your incestuous peerage too.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
Except we're not a religious cult of a country, unlike america. we stopped believing in fairies and elves a while ago. people can be gay etc and we don't care. the queen is a tourist attraction and something to put on coins - no-one gives a shit about her. her job is a formality. and the UK is the least defeatist modern country around - you couldn't even take the vietnamese without killing more of your own people than they did. we fought the wars mostly alone while you sold stuff to germany
pisswit 3 years ago
To pisswit: That's because during WW2, we could have cared less about you. We intentionally sat back, laughed, and placed on bets on when Hitler would defeat you until we stepped in. But good on us, we bankrupted the UK and you were indebted to us for over 60 years.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
What you mean to say is "we COULDN"T have cared less". What you said has the opposite meaning to what you think it does.. think about it for a moment. Ok, it might take longer than that. And your history is pitifully off, Hitler didn't lose because of America, he lost because of a combination of the Russian multitudes and impenetrability of the UK. We know you're fed a lot of propaganda in school - that you cracked the enigma code etc. You think saving private ryan was how it all happened. moron
pisswit 3 years ago
Did your propaganda nightmare allow you to know that the meathead US strategy in iraq of just carpet bombing the country randomly made things much worse, and massive america had to come crawling to tiny UK for military expertise and tactics in the form of the Black Watch? and that the kurds would fight alongside us but wouldn't go within range of your guns because you famously just shoot at anything whether it's on your side or not, even your own uniformed troops? your army's a highly armed mess
pisswit 3 years ago
To pisswit: Please, your country was completely broken finacially, morally, and militarily during WW2. People like my grandparents were taking bets on when you'd give up. But don't expect any favors in the future from us, because just as Americans (not the government) were apt to let you fall to fascism, we'd still be less prone today.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
Financially, certainly, and militarily mostly, but as I said - and as someone who's studied this outside of 'patriotic' american textbooks and wikipedia - the Russians were by far the main reason hitler lost. I know that doesn't sit well with the american cult, but it's true. london is now back to being the financial capital of the world, with more american banks than in new york. by the way your third sentence actually means nothing, do you ever read books at all?
pisswit 3 years ago
To pisswit: It's just like 911. Britain's corcodile tears and grieving was superficial in the aftermath of the attacks. Underneath the national anthem being played at Buckingham Palace, the church services, and the poltical and personal tributes, everyone over there was whispering to each other, "The Americans got what they deserved."
Even before the fire wasd put out, the French accused us of doing this to ourselves as a way to steal oil and to kill babies. I'd expect this lewd behavior.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
Ever heard of operation northwoods? America is on file making plans to kill its own civillians and bomb its own assets as an excuse to invade cuba - the D o D and joint chiefs of staff all signed off on it, kennedy angrily forbade it.. then got shot through the throat and brain. 9/11 may not have been a hoax, but it's also possible that it was, and the fact that you dismiss what "the french" (a french author) said so automatically shows you're another patriotic automaton that can't be objective
pisswit 3 years ago
I don't know where you get this idea that we thought you got what you deserved. we're your best friends - your only other 'friend' (or military outpost), Israel, openly despises you and cynically manipulates you. over here we like the America of the values it once espoused - the 18th century Enlightenment values of the philadelphia convention - but you've lost the way and are now like a blind, rabid, fearful, ignorant, deeply religious maniac with no understanding of the limits of his own power.
pisswit 3 years ago
To pisswit: "We're your best friends." In your eyes maybe! That gave me a good chuckle.
It's none of Britain's concern about what we do in the world. If we want to bomb other countries, then we shall do so. War is a business in the United States just like health care, education, retail, etc. Everything is for profit.
YogaNate79 3 years ago
So who do you think is your best friend? You've really dug yourself into a hole internationally - literally everyone except us thinks you're a rancid horde - and now the american bubble is bursting ahead of time.. that didn't take long did it. less than a century. not a great run. what do you think america's future holds with no friends and a plummeting economy? and how can you go in for all this Jesus stuff and still say such cadaverous war-relishing blackness as you just have? hypocrite
pisswit 3 years ago
We thought ahead, and actually went from superpower to integrated member of the world. America has been acting like it'll keep the top spot forever. in fact it's going to be one of the shortest-lived empires of all time.
pisswit 3 years ago
I suspect, like most christians and religious head-cases generally, you don't know much about your own ridiculous guide-book, or whatever the fucking thing is, and it's more just part of your 'identity'. You're 'all-american' (and you actually SAID that, deliciously enough), so therefore you're a christian. you just happen to worship filthy lucre, blaspheme your imaginary god through idolatrous flag-worship, hate and misconstrue foreigners, who you think should basically just die, etc. hypocrsiy
pisswit 3 years ago
Anyway, I've had my fun. Argue with Alasdair if you want the civil angle on all this transatlantic culture shock. You emerge a bedraggled, pointless mess, none the wiser if only because you're entirely closed off to even faintly challenging perspectives. Keep saluting, you'll live to see the wake-up call bring your cult crashing down around you. In the meantime, spend, obey, spend, obey, spend, obey, spread the stultifying misinformation and stay firmly asleep. Your country likes you that way.
pisswit 3 years ago
I know they tell you that you have separation of church and state, but you don't. It's on the money. It's in the pledge that you creepily make children chant at your cult flag in the morning (no-one in a civilised country has rows of flags about the place, in their gardens etc, it's so primitive). Bush is a religious leader making religious decisions for the nation. most of your politicians go on about god and sign off with "god bless america" etc.. not a whiff of that here. we grew the fuck up.
pisswit 3 years ago
The weather - absolutely
obnoxious attitude - actually we're a damn sight more cordial than your boorish, arrogant lot, but we get a little heated when dealing with uppity know-nothings who display misplaced arrogance.
basically our 'attitude' is why we have the most respected sense of humour on earth, and get to seduce literally any american we meet. there's a sort of clunking, humourless squareness about so many americans that leaves them in the dust conversationally

This video is really, really great. You did a fantastic job. Cambridge looks like such a good school. I want to go there so badly, but the school doesn't offer lots of financial aid to overseas students (I'm an American), thus it would be way too expensive to attend... :-/
BHKH 4 years ago
really, how much is it to attend in American Dollars?
nkip9230 4 years ago
If I were to apply, I'd apply for English, and if I got in it would cost my family 54,000 to 59,000 dollars for me to study there for 3 years (the course takes 3 years to complete). This isn't factoring in living expenses though, which would raise the total amount by quite a lot.
Maybe I messed up the numbers, but that's what I gathered. And that's just English. There are a number of courses that are more expensive to study.
BHKH 4 years ago
how did u find all this out?
in the future i would like to apply to Cambridge...
nkip9230 4 years ago
The Universities in the UK are far cheaper, for equal if not better education. Im an American, Junior in High School, and looking at Univerisites. Most of the ones here at home will cost more than attending school in the UK. Unless you attend a State University and you live in the same state as such.
klxn17 4 years ago
"Unless you attend a State University and you live in the same state as such"
Or if you attend a "top" school (Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, Duke, and so on). They usually offer really good financial aid to students, especially Harvard, Yale, and Princeton.
As far as better goes (education wise), it depends on what you're looking for; e.g., a liberal arts education, a specific program, etc.
BHKH 4 years ago
Cheaper ?? lol. £3,000 a year cheap ? yeah right.
ComradeRed1979 4 years ago
thats the price for EU citizens...Foreigners pay a lot more.
matakoloks 4 years ago
yeah, try $20,000:)
GooseGrl172 4 years ago
and that is the only reson I think we should join the EU. wait, 60,000? I could probably afford that. If I work full time for almost two years and live with my parents... yeij! maybe not.
I hate EU. Why must they always make things so difficult for us? we are a part of europe too!
eizhowa 4 years ago
Depends on the exchange rate a bit. I met someone at interviews from the US who was applying to Cambridge because it would be cheaper, but that was in 2004. Now it's about $2 = £1 UK unis aren't so cheap for Americans.
m0ffx 4 years ago
You can't be serious! Why would you try and show off by saying you're a Cambridge student? Because if you were, you would bloody well know that there is no PPE at Cambridge! That's at Oxford
Ridiculous

Thanks for the advice.
You might want to take a look at the Cambridge Tripos regulations.
I did Philosophy for a term, switched to Economics, and finished in Politics.
Glad to see you're spending your time well.

When is Cambridge going to build a statue or dedicate a garden or park to Sam Baron. Also, why is he not called "Sir Sam Baron"? I mean if Elton John has the title after all...good knight then
