Yes, some of them are now the Taliban. As for Saddam I don't believe the US directly put him into power, they however supported the Baathist party to fight off Soviet influence in the region. Saddam at the time happened to be in power, that is my understanding of those events.

@zephranna01 Whatever the history, if US and Oz troops leave now there will be a massacre of many locals, particularly women and girls, schools will be torn down and the place will go backwards. Re the Diggers trials, if this had not happened then a foreign international court would have stepped in to try them. This way at least we get experienced Oz military people running it and they have the best chance of being treated fairly if they have followed proper rules of engagement etc.

However, they lack the discipline, full professional training, the right ethics, rules of engagement and equipment that have been giving our troops the clear edge in recent combat activity. Talibans' violent oppression of their own people debases their claim to rule (there will be a bloodbath if US/AUS leave) . Force alone will not win this war but our troops are making a real difference and should be commended.

However, they lack the discipline, full professional training, the right ethics, rules of engagement and equipment that have been giving our troops the clear edge in recent combat activity. Talibans' violent oppression of their own people debases their claim to rule (there will be a bloodbath if US/AUS leave) . Force alone will not win this war but our troops are making a real difference and should be commended.

The Taliban took over 90% of Afghanistan in just 3 months! The US and other forces have been there for over 7 years without progress! Ask yourself does this make sense? No! Instead of spending money on wars we could make a bigger difference if we spent it on humanitarian aid! War is not the answer and there was no weapons of mass destruction!
