i lost my brother 10 months ago in a car crash. he was not an idiot. good driver. took part in numerous defensive driving courses etc. the only reason that he died was thanks to a VZ Commodore Wagon not having curtain airbags. wake the fuck up Australian Government and listen to Mark. he is extremely sharp in this sort of thing. He should be head of Driver Safety or the Motor Accident Commission. Good luck to you Skaifey, hope you can get your message across mate.
we have a professional racing driver, a psycologist, a senior accident manager for mercedies benz and parametics all saying that we need to start again and rethink out road system and yet premier john brumby thinks he knows better and says no? wow...
2mins through showing the BF Falcon under the tree, "this had all the wrong ingredients... a young driver, a bad road, and an old car" <-- wtf? old car?
Besides the point. Yeah the BA/BF or VY/VZ are old-ish in terms of years... the cars are still relatively new in terms of model numbers. The only newer falcon / commodore is the VE/FG (which are safer, especially the FG falcon).
If they were talking about a 90s or 80s model car I'd understand but when I look at a BA/BF VY/VZ I dont think to myself "old unsafe car with old technology"
@soseg hmm good point but you can only make a car so safe there are other factors involved ....its like when a tradesman does a botchy job on a worksite do u blame his tools or the tradesman? people are looking at the road toll from the wrong angle and they are corrupted by what the government feeds them thru the media...good job to mark skaife for tryin tho
@AhilMohan u must remember that the VE is heavier too so it due to maybe the better tyres and wheels but also the way better abs, new suspension designs and new suspension components and bigger brakes too and maybe better pad materials ( the VR could have newish pads and that then shouldn't be a factor). but just to put it down to wheels and tyres.....DUMB FUCK.
Doesnt take a genius to figure that out. L2Read; I never said that the wheels and tyres were the *only* component, however it is the *main* factor between the two braking distances in this scenario.
It would be interesting to see the differences in braking distances between the two vehicles with the same wheel/tyre combo - this will give a more accurate indication of braking ability of each vehicle.
Actual peak braking occurs just before the wheels lock up. ABS is there to reduce stopping distance after the wheels lock up. Since it seems that you're one of the idiots that mindlessly slam the brakes, then yes, i agree a car with ABS will stop quicker for you.
Clearly you're living in the past; A VR Calais can be picked up for 5k.
@AhilMohan Well in a car with ABS I 'mindlessly slam the brakes' as that's what abs is designed for. In my car, no I don't as I don't have abs.
I'm sure one can be picked up for 5k. But don't complain that they're comparing a 5k car with a 50k car when the VR WAS 50k. Just shut the fuck up and stop embarrassing yourself.
At the end of the day, new cars are safer and stop quicker than old cars. If you don't believe that please kill yourself.
Yes, i know how ABS works. When i said "ABS is there to reduce stopping distance after the wheels lock up", I worded it quite poorly, sorry. What I meant was ABS activates after the wheels lock up (or just before the wheels locks up, depending on car) [thereby reducing the stopping distance.]
Yes, i know the rims have pretty much nothing to do with the braking. However, they do affect the width and profile of the tyre which can be used. comparing two tyres of the same width but different profiles will show that the tyre with a lower profile will have a greater contact patch compared to the tyre with larger profile, Not to mention less flex.
The VE not only had a lower profile tyre, but also, a much wider tyre compared to the VR, It also seemed it had better quality tyres
If the VR was fitted with the same set of wheels, the difference in braking distance between the two cars would probably be halved to 5m instead of 10m.
By using the same wheels for both cars, this test would have given a proper indication of the difference in braking abilities between the two cars, independent of the tyres used; As majority of the people (within the age group being described in the vid) who drive older cars such as VR's would fit aftermarket/later model wheels.
*sigh* ok I get what you're saying but that's HIS FUCKING POINT! NEWER CARS HAVE BETTER FUCKING EVERYTHING SO THEY STOP FASTER! You're completely missing his point.
Anyone with half a brain will know that most newer cars have shorter stopping distance.
However, what this video does is simply dismiss all older cars and will create a predjudice for undeducated viewers/general public as it groups all older cars together as it shows that they are worse than they actually are.
@AhilMohan But that's not a bad prejudice to have... I myself drive a 1989 R32 Skyline. I've upgraded brakes/suspension and everything but it still wouldn't stop nearly as quick as a 2010 model piece of shit with abs. I realise that... but I still love my car. Old cars have nothing on new cars.
Also, considering the VE is aprrox 7 times the cost of a VR, they may as well have compared a new VE to a new 911 Turbo (approx 7 times the cost of the VE). and with a braking distance 1/2 of the VE and then say that they need supercars as they brake better and its harder to lose control etc.
Then again, you could compare a 20 year old 911 Turbo to the new VE, and yet the 20 year old car will still easily outbrake the new car.
At the end of the day, its the driver, not the car.
Since you disagree with "Its the driver not the car", you're saying that a clueless unskilled driver driving a car with ABS is less likely to be in a crash than a skilled and alert driver driving a car without ABS.
I really cannot be bothered debating with clowns such as yourself. Dont expect any more replies =)
In the video they do a braking distance check. Both cars have ABS and they are braking in a straight line in the wet. This test has absolutely NOTHING to do with driver skill. When you reach the marker slam the brakes on and see how long it takes to stop. If you have a car with abs and you don't mash the brakes in an emergency you're a fucking deadshit.
Stop reading what you want to read you fucking cunt.
I watched this the other nite and have been discussing it on a forum. All agree something needs 2 be done. So all u pollies and police (because you have no idea) as u just love the revenue it generates take note. Something like Mark is trying 2 advocate here should be looked at and implemented straight away. I know plenty of roads that could see 140 easy and i know some roads that even 40 is to fast. We need change now! **Mark, good luck with it and thanks for taking the time to investagate.
@faalap84 Since it was on the yahoo7 website and I couldn't download it, the sound is meant to be coming though the "Sunflower" add-on for iShowU but it isn't working for this video, so instead it is coming though the internal mic of my iMac, that is why you hear the background noise.

Skaifey is spot on. I mean if you compare us to Finland and Germany, we are way behind when it comes to driving.

@AhilMohan mega fail... Newer ABS + better suspension has more of an effect.
The wheels have fuck all to do with it. Tyres would make a difference but not as much as better abs and better suspension.
