@vhead1 I absolutely agree, the russian roulette scene is incredibly tense, and the best part of the film! I really like The Deer Hunter. The only two reservations I have about it is that it's maybe a bit too ambitious and a tad too long! Other than that, solid movie.
@DeadCamper Yeah but Mark seems to think it is racist, when it accurately depicts what the Viet Cong did to POWs. Google "John McCain arms." And he says its "politics are in the wrong place," when it is clearly not a pro-war piece. Everyone who survives in the movie comes back physically or mentally fucked up, and it affects everyone around them. I think the end is obviously an elegy or ironic, but it never beats you over the head with political messages.

I tend to agree. Chimino saw himself as a FF Coppolo type film maker, but he's too heavy handed. Take the wine on the wedding dress 'symbol', I don't think that's a particularly clever device. Then there's De Nero not shooting the deer, it's all a bit heavy handed for me.

people like Kermode really take the fun out of watching films, not everyone studys cinema. over thirty years of people praising this film, and all of a sudden kermode thinks he see's more than them and it's a bad film with shaky acting.
kermode like most critics hate anything that the masses like, that's where the critics superiority comes from, if i know more than the common cinema goer about some art house film i have the greater film knowledge. but hey we cant all be perfect...
Although I disagree with Kermode on his comments on the Deerhunter, I still think he is one of the more knowledgeable and insightful film critics around..and he shouldn't take the fun out of watching films, because your opinion is your own and you don't need to agree with him...Without critics like Kermode, film studios will continue to churn out rubbish purely because it has "mass appeal" ( and more movies are made now then they used to be, alot of them the cinematic equivalent of junk food)

i really disagree with the deer hunter comments , the film isn't a vietnam pro USA propaganda piece, saying look at the sub human vietnamese against the wholesome blue collar americans, its about the suffering of the american working class, since the revolution to iraq it is them who suffer and die for america and yet are still staunch patriots.

The film is not so much a war piece, but a Conrad-esque examination of external forces - both explainable and unexplainable - that challenge and disrupt friendships. Like Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter uses the Vietnam War as a backdrop to its intellectual and philosophical explorations of the human condition.
I agree that The Deer Hunter is massively overrated and self-indulgent but I disagree about Christopher Walken -- I think he's fantastic -- and I don't see how it's a racist film. Was this really a controversial statement for Kermode? Did he get a lot of flak for it?

Not a huge controversy. But quite a few people emailed in disagreeing with him. Marks full opinion on the film is on the Deer Hunter wikipedia page.
