I started weeping esp when the baby got taken away from the mother. I myself have recently tried becoming vegan for about a year now and had a lot of trouble adjusting and breaking lifelong habits. However, it has been so worth it and when I'm into it, it makes me happy every day. Lately I needed motivation to get back on track with it and more reasons to keep it up (at least when I have more money so I can buy food....) and this convinces me all the more. Thank you for sharing
I have been vegetarian all of my life but after seen some of this in person I became vegan and I am staying that way forever...Milk is connected to tons of cancers in women, so save yourself and them. Thanks for posting.
so glad to be vegan....... humans really are the dumbest and nastiest animal on this planet what gives us the right to treat animals like that - payback will happen
i have put my children on soy milk, and we are tryin to not eat dairy products.....we dont eat pork uless its free ranged and this vid has shown me that tha same should go with BEEF.......i cryed
@Angeliccooke Contrary to what many believe, soy is definitely not very good for you. Especially considering Monsanto has a patent on the soy (with lovely GMO qualities included). I would recommend rice milk (very, very good -- tastes like dairy without the guilt lol) or maybe almond milk.
@grlbhvingbadly Hi Thanks for the info, yes I know about it, my kids do not drink soy, I have tried, i use soy for my one cup of coffee per day and eat soy ice cream as a treat. I try and avoid it, but do not really like other milks and would rather risk soy than drink milk. I avoid soy product such as the processed stuff. we also do not have Gi soy in Australia regularly like the USA. Thanks for your time. :))

Sure it's sad, but that's not going to stop me from eating them and what they produce. We have the power, and although we are abusing it, we aren't going to stop. Be realistic; how many people are really going to stop eating dairy products?
holocoust...somebody says never again but humans do that permanently all over the world living creatures suffer and die in horrible way...god create a human on his similarity...???????????????????
I just want to apologize for eating meat and dairy products my whole life. I'm apologizing to life and not to people. Humans apologies can never be accepted just because of the lives we've already taken for the good of nothing. my parents raised me with meat & dairy in my diet not knowing how so un-nutritional it really is because their parents ha no clue and raised them the same way....I juz want to explain to the people who don't know that cow milk belongs to calves and meat belongs to the earth, not to humans. thanx

They don't deny the calves milk/ the mother milk is the most important to the calve the first days of live because of the calestrum. The dairyman can't use the milk for production. Yes the male calves will go away. This is a business just the way it is. You people need to worry about all the children in this country that go to bed hungry. Your eyes are still shut
Oh God, this has been an eye opener. It just shows how greedy a world we have become. Never though about calves being denied milk and being separated at birth and slaughtered. Only a mother knows how difficult it is being separated from her baby. God please give this world wisdom and the strength an will to change ourselves.

How many human children are abused everyday? Does that mean all humans are bad? Dairy farms profit from live health animals. Give me a camera and I can make any thing look bad.
How many children are used for meat, dairy, eggs? Or would you defend forced child labor as well, and call it "humane" as long as they weren't beaten?
Whenever I watch things like this I wanna cry infact I am crying. I work with cows and I love all of them as if they were my own. I would never eat my friends and some cows have become my best friends... They are so sweet and kind and the most gentle animals on the planet. They dont deserve a life like this. I would love to save all of them and tell them that they are going to be ok. And no one will ever hurt them again. But I cant so I do what I can to love as many of them as possible .
Eating meat makes one cruel - this is the basis of Patanjali yoga - simply put, its bad/horrible karma from which there is no escape. Meat consumption is the indirect reason for violence/aggression - thats the reason why the Indian society with more than 70% vegetarians has never ever invaded any other country unlike most other civilizations which cannot stop themselves from meddling/interfering with others as well as picking up squabbles!
well done! i absolutely agree with you! if people want peace on earth, we have to start extending compassion to those at our mercy. we must separate ourselves as much as possible from the idea of violence, and that includes the so-called 'necessary violence' inflicted on millions of innocents each day. otherwise (as a famous author once suggested) it would be unfair to prey/wish for mercy when we are unwilling to extend it to others.

I saw those commercials from the california dairy board that shows the cows eating in the field in california and talking to each other. It said the best milk comes from happy cows. So I don't think most of this video was shot in california because a lot of those cows didn't look happy. They weren't even talking at all.
I'm glad that here in Australia our dairy cattle are not treated in this fashion. The majority of dairy farms here are on broad, vast paddocks of prime food and the calves, when they are born, are allowed to have their first drink off its mother (the colostrum and antibodies needed for survival) and then they are taken away to be raised as "poddy" calves on powdered milk. I know that when we raised calves on our school farm recently they were treated with the utmost care and decency.
You'd be happy to know that muelsing is being phased out :D Theyre breeding new varieties of merino sheep which do not have the trademark wrinkles on their breach. I however believe that muelsing was an effective practice on controlling flystrike...but I think the sheep do deserve some kind of anesthetic or pain killers...but the pro's did outweigh the con's.
I do not actually work at a dairy, but living in a dairy farming area I know many people who own dairy farms (including family) and I have been to many of them, the cows are not treated like queens, but they are not treated cruely, nor are their offspring :)
Repetitious artificial impregnation - confinement, having your young ripped from you at birth - being milked so frequently that your bones are robbed of the calcium they need... being sent to slaughter at a fration of your life span... GOSH - what do you define as "cruelty"?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What you are talking about is cruelty, but not all dairys are like that, all Peta extremest have the same line of thought, that every farm treats their animals badly, and that all pit bulls are bad and need to be destroyed, I think Peta is the cruelest group in the world. Sea kittens! Ha! that just makes me want to eat fish more!
Not every vegan is a PETA supporter or activist. You're an ignorant and an arrogant person too, strangely enough most of those comments are always from meat-eaters and not vegans, I wonder why.
I never said that every vegan was a PETA supporter, I merely said PETA are extremests, take for example the situation between PETA and the Aussie wool growers, they made a whole heap of companies boycott them because of a method of removing breach wrinkles, when in fact not removing them was much crueller. PETA knew the wool growers were developing new lines of the merino sheep (with out wrinkles on the breach), and anyone with sense would know that takes years.

The thing about vegans is, is that they think they are all high and mighty, they expect you to make vegan food when they come to your house, but they dont return the favour by making omnivorous meals for those who arent vegan/vegetarian that come to their house, they expect them to eat vegan food. Selfish, is it not?
The difference is that the vegan sees eating meat as unethical for them. You would be expecting them to betray their ethics. Now that would be selfish.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What, so they cant make one meal for someone else because they find it unethical, what if someone was a pure carnivore and they went over to their house, and it was unethical for them to eat vegetables, then what? Its the exact same situation.
Why would anyone see eating vegetables as unethical? There's a big difference. Let me make you a tofu vegetable stir fry. You won't look at another burger again. :-)
That might just be the way their culture is, like how some people eat dogs and cats, thats their culture....How is there a difference if it is to do with the ethics of a culture? and Ive had tofu....not my cup of tea :) there are much better vego meals than tofu :)
Not all calves are treated like gold and not all calves are treated like shit. We get it. But the fact remains that these thinking, feeling beings are treated as commodities. "Products". That's what enables these companies to treat them that way. THAT is what truely is disgusting.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
are you trying to kill people? pretty soon eating vegetables will be cruelty lmao. and most dairy calves get the colostrum, because you can't sell that. and have you ever seen a holstein calf? there's not a lot there. so most are NOT slaughtered right away.
Yeah, because the average citizen is really going to adapt a real calf. Along with adopting a kid in every third world country, on top of keeping down their own real job and paying for food on their own table. Yeah, I have extra cash to adopt calves. I'm sure that'll make a huge difference.
I've worked in dairy farm, I even have a friend who was raised around dairy farms and never have I've seen any thing close to this. All of the cows are treated with good care.
So instead of sitting on your ass you actually get up and visit a real dairy farm, and if there is abused cows in them you help out instead of sighing petitions and making videos
How sad that these living beings are nothing but money-making commodities to so many people. We're all going to die but it matters how we are treated between birth and death, no matter the length. Treating baby animals like this, especially, takes a very cold greedy heart. In addition, dairy milk does more harm than good, to people and animals.

Its funny how every comment against this video gets multiple thumbs down. I'm not sure where this video was taken, but it is obviously well below both regulations and the moral and economic standards that almost all dairymen follow. First of all, if cows are mistreated, they will give less milk and be worth less to the farmer. Same goes for a calf that has not been taken care of properly. Why would a dairyman who is in the business to make money do such a thing?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
thank you! this video is SOOOO one sided.... if oyu are going to post one side, do both... and if you don't maybe i will take a visit to my friends dairy farm where the calves and cows are so well treated! they even show some of the nicer calves!

besides, you ahve no right to compare humans to cows. humans are capable of complex emotions and feelings. animals are not. god put animals here for a reason. human usage. take also considerariton, humane, meens treated like a human... animals should not be so.

and i'm sure some diary farms are less humane then others. but this video is very one sided. ytou have to take in the consideration of MILLIONS of dairy farms, some very pleasent i'm sure.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i am not speaking for all diary farms, thank you. just one my friend owns that is very humane and friendly. i've worked here. calves aren't branded, fed beer, or killed. they are bottle fed and then auctioned off, to whatever purpose. the cows room free in a huge pasture with a few bulls and brought in when they calve. theres nothing cruel about that. just sad that the calves are taken away.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
taking the calves away from their mothers is not cruel. they never have a chance to bond with the mothers so their is no attachment at all whatso ever. and while that may seem sad to a human, it's really not. they are very well cared for. and fed by hand.
my friends grandparents own a succesful and rather large dairy farm. Yes, calves are immediatly taken away from their parents. BUT the calves are not killed no abused! they are cleaned by the hands then stalled in little stalls with sahvings and all. they had bottle fed and then grain fed when older. they keep some of them, especially the females, and auction off the males at a local auction at an appropriate age. it is NOT cruel.
I cannot believe this video was flagged. This video is not inappropriate to minors at all. But this did confirm my revulsion towards meat and how its produced in the U.S. and abroad. Not only am I going vegetarian, I might be going vegan.
Unfortunately, I would have to agree to that. Not all dairy farms treat their animals so badly. But, I recently talked to a local farmer who stopped milking is cows 20 years ago! He lost his business because of industry farms and now farms healthy beef cows that live with their families. The least the world could do is let these animals live in natural habitats and allow the mothers to be with their babies. In factory farms they don't even get much dignity.
Truly there is no reason for this posting to be flagged as inappropriate for minors. The same people that flagged it most likely would let their kids play hours of violent video games (after eating a hamburger, no less).
I don't get why this video has been flagged as inappropriate for minors. Nothing in this video is graphically violent. Just shows how people are trying to keep the truth about dairy from their kids.

Loved the ending. That's how it should be. I'm vegetarian myself but I don't have a big problem with people eating meat exactly. It's the industrialized farming, the imhumanity of it, the greed. If you have to kill an animal, do it humanly. I don't like seeing them suffer like that and the mother's grief. I couldn't live with myself having a job like that.
I swear these comments kill me, I can't believe that people have there heads so far up their asses with their acinine opinions. I don't drink milk, I take calcium pills. As for this being made up propagnada Bullshit. This inhumane treatment of cows and their calves happens everyday. To say these calves are sick is a total cover-up and just another way for these jackasses who run these places to not be held accountable for the actions.
aint u people ever heard the statistics about how many times more a cow can make to feed her calf and it was prolly the dumb fucking mexican feeding it
You can get free colostrum from any mammal who has just given birth; that's the extra rich, initial letdown of breast milk. That doesn't mean that dairy farmers allow the calf to have it, though; I don't know if they might not reserve it to dole out to sickly calves as they think best. I was raised on a farm; factory farming is brutally cruel.
Thank you Farm Sanctuary. So few people stop to think that we drink the calf's milk and that they will either starve to death or die of infections due to a lack of vital colostrum they'd receive from their mother's milk. Keep up the good work.
Why else would they scream, whine and cry while having their legs broken so they won't run...or their throats slit so they can bleed to death just to be your next steak dinner.
This is true. The calf being shown treated in the video was rescued from a dead pile at an auction. The investigator scooped up the calf and took it to a nearby veterinarian's office, who tried his best to stabilize the calf so he could be transported to a larger veterinary hosiptal. The calf's "owner" was not in the picture; he or she had long since discarded the calf to die at the auction yard.
These particular calves were not given colostrum because they were born too small and weak to be worth the time investment. They were slated for the slaughterhouse the day they were born because it would have been too costly to nurse them to health and then raise them for low-grade beef. I know this for a fact because I was there. They were hours old and on the truck headed to the slaughterhouse when they were rescued. That is the unmitigated truth.
You're right. All animals do feel pain. The video proves it. People who say they don't are the stupidest, ignorant animals in the world. And I feel sorry for them. They say animals don't feel pain only because they choose not to listen. So don't give in to those freaks who say it's alright for them to be treated like this.
Modern Meat: A Brutal Harvest (Washington Post / April 10, 2001) Based on a 7 month investigation, this series reveals major flaws in the U.S. government's meat-safety net. The Post reveals how increased production speeds at many processing plants causes the botched slaughter of cows and pigs, condemning the animals to a slow and painful death. Read the TRUE facts in this report). The govt. & factory farms (A.K.A. GREEDY CORPORATIONS) do not care about animal brutality.
You pro vegan folks need to wake and smell the blood that goes into the production of your own food and cotton. If you think for a second that it is *cruelty free* you got another thing coming. Of course ever time I mentioned this to an ARA all I get back is the lame excuse that is is *accidental*. If you know about you help support it. Billions of animals die in farming veggies, soy, nus, and cotton. Hypocrites. Your footprints are as bloody as anyone elses. Your just in denial.
You forgot to mention the bolt that is driven into the cows head before it's throat is cut. Animals and people will move many times after death. Cut a chickens head off and it will flap all over the place for an amazing amount of time. But it's dead! Nerves do incredible things after death. It doesn't mean it's in pain ot being tortured.
To complete this video-dairy cows are slaughtered. A report by the Washington Post explains that "the cow has her throat slit by workers in a fast moving production line." Slaughterhouse worker Ramon Moreno, explains that after their throats have been slit, MANY ANIMALS ARE STILL ALIVE & FULLY CONSCIOUS and he frequently has had to cut the legs off living cows. He told the Post, "They blink. They make noises...The head moves, the eyes are wide and looking around." Boycott cruelty...GO VEGAN!
You are only seeing what the AR fanatics want you to see. Videos cant be manipulated to show something other than what is on them. I saw two vets working to save a calf. That shows me the owner cared enough to spend the money to try and save it but this is not a perfect world and things do die. You don't know the story behind it expect what and AR site is telling you.
Dear Gawd! I watched the video again and I have to ask if you animal rights dingbats eat everything pro AR site right up or what?? I live in Tulare County CA ...dairy land big time. Been to lots of dairies and this video is AR bull$hit as they all are. The Dutch dairies would sell off their own children if thought it would make their cows more comfy. They have fans, misters, baths, fly spray, first in line for all vets, lots of food...ect. Get over yourselves!
This video is heartbreaking. How can the dairy industry in California be so cold and heartless. And how can they spread that ridiculous false avertisement of happy cows. Happy cows indeed; this isn't business, it's ignorant corruption. Yet some choose to ignore it.
Baby calves? Do even know what heifers and bull calves are? If your going to claim you know about cows at least get the names right. The video is AR oropaganda porn. They use it to get your money and it works!
Lawdog and mistakenvixen are so misled about health and current farming, geeze. They probably even voted for Bush and still think this war is about terrorism! Republicans love sheep like them.... notmilk-dot-com...
Hi, MistakenVixen. A lot of Americans think that we need cow's milk for adequate calcium, but nothing could be further from the truth. You can get plenty of calcium from plant sources, and calcium which is better assimilated by human bodies. Consider the folks in Asian countries, who don't drink milk past infancy. We are the only species to drink milk past weening age and, other than our companion animals, the only species to drink another species' milk.
Now that I don't consume dairy anymore, I can look any baby calf in the eye and say, "I would never hurt you." I feel so much more connected to all living beings since going vegan.
Please try to be honest. Stop making video fables that break the hearts of the public with lies. Baby calves aren't denied milk, in fact, they are fed milk for months. Slaughtered day old calves? Ridiculous! There is no market, nor money to be made by doing this. Your video proves your lies by showing ear-tagged calves that are supposedly going to slaughter. Ear tags cost money and are used to identify future breeding stock. Why spend tag money on a calf to be slaughtering the same day?
Gone are the days of dairy cows grazing on green pastures and coming in twice a day for milking. Here in Wisconsin a popular practice is to cut off their tails so they can't swat filth in the face of the milker, filth which should not be there in the first place. They are left defenseless against flies and insects. This industry, like all others, has lost compassion and is all about the dollar. Very sad.
many definitely consume waayyy too much animal products throughout the course of the day, and many don't even think about the animal torture that went occured for them to have their cheese and burger. Its sooo sad. I hope this video helps to bring people out of their ignorance. Happy cows do NOT come from CA regardless of whatever ad they try to portray as the truth on TV.
:S I am definitely going vegan!
this is horrible!

Eating meat makes one cruel - this is the basis of Patanjali yoga - simply put, its bad/horrible karma from which there is no escape. Meat consumption is the indirect reason for violence/aggression - thats the reason why the Indian society with more than 70% vegetarians has never ever invaded any other country unlike most other civilizations which cannot stop themselves from meddling/interfering with others as well as picking up squabbles!
irir123 3 years ago 3
well done! i absolutely agree with you! if people want peace on earth, we have to start extending compassion to those at our mercy. we must separate ourselves as much as possible from the idea of violence, and that includes the so-called 'necessary violence' inflicted on millions of innocents each day. otherwise (as a famous author once suggested) it would be unfair to prey/wish for mercy when we are unwilling to extend it to others.

I know that when we raised calves on our school farm recently they were treated with the utmost care and decency.
bubblebrunna 3 years ago
Shame you don't do the same for your sheep. =/
5Pointsofconnection 3 years ago 3
You'd be happy to know that muelsing is being phased out :D Theyre breeding new varieties of merino sheep which do not have the trademark wrinkles on their breach. I however believe that muelsing was an effective practice on controlling flystrike...but I think the sheep do deserve some kind of anesthetic or pain killers...but the pro's did outweigh the con's.

Nonsense.
Which dairy do you work at then?
bking5625 3 years ago
I do not actually work at a dairy, but living in a dairy farming area I know many people who own dairy farms (including family) and I have been to many of them, the cows are not treated like queens, but they are not treated cruely, nor are their offspring :)
bubblebrunna 3 years ago
Repetitious artificial impregnation - confinement, having your young ripped from you at birth - being milked so frequently that your bones are robbed of the calcium they need... being sent to slaughter at a fration of your life span... GOSH - what do you define as "cruelty"?

What you are talking about is cruelty, but not all dairys are like that, all Peta extremest have the same line of thought, that every farm treats their animals badly, and that all pit bulls are bad and need to be destroyed, I think Peta is the cruelest group in the world. Sea kittens! Ha! that just makes me want to eat fish more!
bubblebrunna 3 years ago
Not every vegan is a PETA supporter or activist. You're an ignorant and an arrogant person too, strangely enough most of those comments are always from meat-eaters and not vegans, I wonder why.
tranquil87 3 years ago 2

Selfish, is it not?
bubblebrunna 3 years ago
The difference is that the vegan sees eating meat as unethical for them. You would be expecting them to betray their ethics. Now that would be selfish.

Why would anyone see eating vegetables as unethical? There's a big difference. Let me make you a tofu vegetable stir fry. You won't look at another burger again. :-)

Why would a dairyman who is in the business to make money do such a thing?

taking the calves away from their mothers is not cruel. they never have a chance to bond with the mothers so their is no attachment at all whatso ever. and while that may seem sad to a human, it's really not. they are very well cared for. and fed by hand.
MercuryJokerCasino 4 years ago

jamierae03 4 years ago 4
i have some input:
my friends grandparents own a succesful and rather large dairy farm.

05181967 3 years ago
Unfortunately, I would have to agree to that. Not all dairy farms treat their animals so badly. But, I recently talked to a local farmer who stopped milking is cows 20 years ago! He lost his business because of industry farms and now farms healthy beef cows that live with their families. The least the world could do is let these animals live in natural habitats and allow the mothers to be with their babies. In factory farms they don't even get much dignity.

CountBezukhov 4 years ago 3
Thank you Farm Sanctuary. So few people stop to think that we drink the calf's milk and that they will either starve to death or die of infections due to a lack of vital colostrum they'd receive from their mother's milk. Keep up the good work.

Animals do feel pain.
Why else would they scream, whine and cry while having their legs broken so they won't run...or their throats slit so they can bleed to death just to be your next steak dinner.
Dumbass.
lilwierdo161 4 years ago 2
This is true. The calf being shown treated in the video was rescued from a dead pile at an auction. The investigator scooped up the calf and took it to a nearby veterinarian's office, who tried his best to stabilize the calf so he could be transported to a larger veterinary hosiptal. The calf's "owner" was not in the picture; he or she had long since discarded the calf to die at the auction yard.
arianamei 4 years ago
Dairybest,
These particular calves were not given colostrum because they were born too small and weak to be worth the time investment. They were slated for the slaughterhouse the day they were born because it would have been too costly to nurse them to health and then raise them for low-grade beef. I know this for a fact because I was there. They were hours old and on the truck headed to the slaughterhouse when they were rescued. That is the unmitigated truth.

GREEDY CORPORATIONS) do not care about animal brutality.
martyanddenise 4 years ago
You pro vegan folks need to wake and smell the blood that goes into the production of your own food and cotton. If you think for a second that it is *cruelty free* you got another thing coming. Of course ever time I mentioned this to an ARA all I get back is the lame excuse that is is *accidental*. If you know about you help support it. Billions of animals die in farming veggies, soy, nus, and cotton. Hypocrites. Your footprints are as bloody as anyone elses. Your just in denial.
Karyn64 4 years ago
You forgot to mention the bolt that is driven into the cows head before it's throat is cut. Animals and people will move many times after death. Cut a chickens head off and it will flap all over the place for an amazing amount of time. But it's dead! Nerves do incredible things after death. It doesn't mean it's in pain ot being tortured.
Karyn64 4 years ago
To complete this video-dairy cows are slaughtered. A report by the Washington Post explains that "the cow has her throat slit by workers in a fast moving production line." Slaughterhouse worker Ramon Moreno, explains that after their throats have been slit, MANY ANIMALS ARE STILL ALIVE & FULLY CONSCIOUS and he frequently has had to cut the legs off living cows. He told the Post, "They blink. They make noises...The head moves, the eyes are wide and looking around." Boycott cruelty...GO VEGAN!

That is supposed to say videos CAN be manipulated. Wow cows eating....getting a bath....the horror!
Karyn64 4 years ago
You are only seeing what the AR fanatics want you to see. Videos cant be manipulated to show something other than what is on them. I saw two vets working to save a calf. That shows me the owner cared enough to spend the money to try and save it but this is not a perfect world and things do die. You don't know the story behind it expect what and AR site is telling you.

Why spend tag money on a calf to be slaughtering the same day?

you work on a farm or what?

Because law stipulates that if you transport a farm animal by truck, you must ear-tag them.
