@Shellyz2u Actually, it doesn't, I-64 splits just a hair further down the interstate, right in town... goes to Beckley and Huntington... Just after the I-77/I-79 split, it is just I-77 for a mile or so.
Great vid, have entered the Charleston area so many times at that I-77-79 split coming down from Wheeling but had never seen it from that perspective. Thanks.
thats pretty cool...my grandparents live right below the runway on the elk river...i have spent a lot of time there and have seen a ton of planes fly in and out of there but have never seen what its like on top...
Landing there will get your heart started, especially on one of those small planes with the briggs and stratton engines. lol

To build the airport they cut the tops off two adjacent hills and dumped the spoil into the valley between, smoothed it flat. Sorta.
Back about 1968-69 a Piedmont airliner undershot the runway and slammed into the hillside, nearly everyone died.

Yes, it's on a hilltop over the city and I-77/I-64... They just completed a major runway extension as well...

Is this the airport on top of a hill in Charleston?
ace102692 2 years ago
No wonder the airport is so small, not a lot of tourrists. But still a lot of people in the Charleston area.

That has to be a 300 foot drop at the end of the runway...probably scarier to land there than take off.
iratepiratemike 2 years ago
300 sounds about right.... big drop...
mcgervey 2 years ago
Actually a 900 foot drop.

I lived in Charleston for many years. I never flew out of Yeager - it's nice to see what it looks like.

That is nice. I grew up near Ripley, so I've traveled through that spot so many times I can drive it in my sleep.
