There's more BS in these comments than you can shake a stick at, if that's your idea of a good time.
Rolex is not and has never been about status, but rather achievement and Rolex at the forefront of wristwatch technology throughout the 20th Century.
NASA chose the Speedmaster because it was the only chronograph that met their standards that could be bought off-the-shelf and the hesalite crystal was a big reason that the watch was chosen.
A vast proportion of the cost of Rolex and others goes on advertising and sponsoring celebrities to wear them. Many manufacturers buy in movements and a little research can find other makes with "high end" movements at a fraction of the price from lesser known but equal makers. Look how many watch manufacturers buy in ETA movements and the huge disparity in prices between makes with the identical 2824-2 movement. Likewise with vintage Landeron chronograph movements, used in many brands.
Rolex sells 750.000 watches followed by Breitling with 150.000 watches each year.
I can tell you that those high class watches are not better than a watch for 700-1000 bucks. For example: In many watches you will find a Valjoux or ETA 7750 movement. But how can it be that a Breitling Windrider Chronomat with a 7750 movement and Pilot bracelet cost that much (3800 Euros) when a no name watch with the same movement cost only 1000 Euros?
@ganimed1976 Movement doesn't always define the price (it does have to be carefully selected, tuned etc). You're looking at case quality, satin/polish, edge definition, bracelet quality, CLASP quality/complexity (is it machined from one piece of steel or just thin pressed out tin can thin clasp). Also the face, bezel (ceramic, machined, stamped or maybe just painted)... and there is prestige (I guess what You call "the name") - a thing that dissapears in todays world filled with chinese product.
@ganimed1976 I can guarantee that the fit and finish, as well as the accuracy and precision, will be much better on the more expensive watch. The extra money isn't all in the name.
@ganimed1976 Rolex and breitling arent really all that high class except for the name as you say. If you want a true piece of art you need a Patek or Breguet but that will set you back 20 thousand Euros at the very least so its up to you.
@jezza1789 My next watch will be an Omega Speedmaster Professional, maybe a pre 1969. Many watch collectors say that the Omega Speedmaster Pro has the best and most sophisticated movement ever. I need to know if that is true ;)
@ganimed1976 Hey, I'm not trying to burst your bubble and that's total bs. Omega makes nice Watches that are very overpriced like Rolex but no watch that Omega has ever made has ever been ranked in the top ten of the Finest Movements ever. Zenith and Patek(two name a few) make some of the finest movements ever.
Rolex does Indeed make some Excellent watches but most all are Incredibly overpriced and Status more then Substance. I'd love a Zentih watch with the El Primero. Patek 5960R!
@ryanjofre NASA decided to equipe their astronauts with Omega Speedmaster Professional watches back in those days because of their durability, accuracy and reliability. I mean, hey it's NASA, they should know their business. After all the Omega Speedmaster Professional was the first and (afaik) "the only" watch ever worn on the surface of the moon. There must be a good reason for that ;)
Exactly. Again. Like Omega, Rolex and Breitling are more Status then Substance. Many would argue that point about all the later and especially Breitling. Rolex flat out Lies about how long it takes to make their watches. Girard Perregaux makes works of art as do many , many others like Zenith, IWC and the German company whos name escapes me.
At the end of the day NO ONE can beat Hamilton for value in a real swiss Automatic. Hamilton with a 7750 is all I need.
Seiko Spring Drive movements trump most if not all swiss counterparts. Many brag about in house this in house that, no one is more in house than Seiko. The even make they're own jewels right down to the oil's for the movements. I use to be swiss watch snob but saw the light.
@superfast30 Maitres du Temps, Armin Strom, and my favourite Bulgari also make everything in house, right down to the smallest screws and finest springs. And actually not all Spring Drive watches are 100% made in house. Only those in the high end lines like Grand Seiko, Credor, Ananta, and Seiko Premiere are 100% in house. In any case, what's the point of wearing a $4000 - $10,000 watch if it says Seiko on the dial?? People are going to assume it's a $300 fashion watch
That's absolute BS that a Rolex can "take well over a year to complete". They make an average of 2000 watches each day. They're nothing extraordinary; for around the same price you can buy a Bulgari with a completely in-house made movement, case and strap.
@EpiphoneArchtopLover I heard what you heard, but I think they mean to say it takes that long to design a movement from idea to production. Then yeah, they can make many a day.
I'm just going to say it. I'm happy that I'm of European descent. 300 years ago, my ancestors were building fine watch movements while savages in other parts of the globe were still sleeping in their own fecal matter.
Hey I saw a video that was taken in Rolex factory in Switzerland and some mid-bracelet/band pieces were empty inside them, they were just curved. I was shocked and I still don't understand how that's possible in such a great company's manufacture section. WTF!? I'm still in shock. Check out the YouTube video titled: A look inside the Rolex factory. And the shameful scene I'm talking about is at 0:54... I prefer a high end replica after seeing the video rather than a real with curved mid-band.
