I just found out on Friday that I got the role of Mme. Dubonnet in my high school's "The Boyfriend" and I couldn't be more thrilled! Thank you for posting this. It's excellent.
Dubonnet is fantastic. Yes, Polly needs to be considerably softer in volume than Dubonnet but this Polly couldn't even hit the High Bb in the second of the two octave slides and her sound wasn't focussed at the end.
I first saw this yesterday when my dear friendly Kate played the Headmistress she was fantastic with a perfect french accent and all :) I still enjoy this version although I'm biased towards Kate :p This version has the upper hand on atmosphere and set snd such
Mme Dubonnet has a very impressive voice! It's not an amazingly easy song to sing (i know, i played Dubonnet myself) but this girl did a brilliant job!
My school's putting on this musical this fall! and I really want the part of Polly! Thanks for putting videos of the performance up. It helps me out a lot!
You must all go and look at candiapple89's poor little pierette. The acting she's talking about is overacting. I put a comment which she deleted!!! Can't take criticism. The acting involves flapping the arms like a demented albatross, she looks like she might take off. I think its so you don't notice that she can't sing!!!
I knew you drama types were bitchy, but I didn't think you were that bad. Whilst this is an undoubtedly a good performance, she is perfectly correct in pointing out that there was very little acting involved in this particular scene. She has no way of knowing the true extent of Polly's acting ability as we haven't uploaded any other clips of the production, and it is clear that the comment was not meant in spite.
In terms of candiapple89's performance, she certainly isn't flapping around like a 'demented albatross'. It appears that in her production she was told to remain in character, and whilst I don't claim to be an expert in musical theatre I'd wager that Polly's version wouldn't have sounded as good if she were to sing it with a heavy French accent. Furthermore from where I'm sitting it appears that candiaplle89 can carry a tune perfectly well.
It must also be noted candiapple89's performance appears to have been filmed by a member of the audience with a hand held camera, rather than the multicamera shoot we undertook with semi-professional equipment. Whilst I am in no way trying to suggest that this adds to Biddenham's performance, the rapid camera movements featured in her video does in part distract the viewer from the performance. It comes down to the fact that a live performance is always best as you were there.
Finally whist I realise you are free to post whatever opinions you have on here, I would suggest that you try to keep mindless criticism involving flying birds to a minimum, as it will only result in far worse criticism being directed back at this video, and any other parts of the performance we put online :)
PS - Sorry its seems I've posted so much, originally this was one long post, but Youtube won't let me post more that 500 charecters at a time!
Candiapple89 what u talking about. Acting can be subtle it doesn't have to be in your face. If you had seen the rest of the show you would know that she can act the pants off most people. She was great funny, sad the whole range.
Whilst I agree that perhaps my acting could have matched my singing better, it was an artistic decision that within the whole contxt of the play, this song was the least gimicky of them all, and such, it was to focus on the simplicity of the dance and the singing, therefore to "prance" around the stage would be missing the point :)
Who else thinks the dancer is unescessary???
BroadwayNerd123 1 year ago 8
@BroadwayNerd123 Not only is it unnecessary, but it doesnt fit the time period of the play. AT ALL. That's just crappy directing. The End.

beautiful song

@MattstradLmtd It is a beautiful song! YES! When people can actually do it justice...
inked017 1 year ago
this is supposed to be sung with a french accent..
and the dancing does NOT fit the era of the play.
inked017 1 year ago
@inked017 It doesent have to be. Its fine having different variations.
MattstradLmtd 1 year ago
@MattstradLmtd Not really. That's not being true to the playwrites. It is actually offensive, and just downright lazy. Bad directing.
