That part of Saw confuses me. The guy is a doctor, he could probably cut off a toe or two, or part of his heel, and easily get out of the contraption without having to cut off his leg.

Or he could do the smart thing, and use his shirt to pull the phone towards him. Someone could say 'he panicked and was not thinking straight', but the guy is highly educated, and that scene, meant to be shocking, just reeked of stupidity to me.

Turns out in the most recent movie or the 3d one which ever one that is that he's in on it apparently or maybe shortly after this he joins up with that jigsaw guy once he escapes, don't know why he would cut of the entire foot though I totally agree with you!

the phone would have done no good, he couldnt tell his wife to send police to his location because he didnt know where he was, and the phone was rigged so it couldnt make outgoing calls, it could only receive them. and if he were to only cut his heel, his foot would still be useless without it plus it would be more painful and harder to do because the bone is stronger there

If you've seen the movie, you know that the hacksaws were only capable of cutting through skeleton and not the chains, they tried cutting the chains but it didn't work.

@AccidentalGhost The blade was changed, however, to cut through bone. Hacksaw blades are replaceable, cos they can break or go blunt very easily. In the film the blade has been replaced so it can cut through bone., as they may also do in a butchers.
