i dont like that consistently on opera videos the camera people often insist on a wide shot on singers high notes... Like her beautiful A#6 @ 4:14THEY PULLED THE CAM AWAY??? WHY??????
GREAT SINGER...IT IS A PITY SHE DID NOT HOLD THE LAST NOTE A LITTLE LONGER...SHE COULD BUT MAYBE WAS TOO MUCH SHOW OFF???....GREAT INTERPRETATION THOUGH !!!
@simisimi9 In the Met Galas all the arias are a little bit faster and shorter than usual!! Quivar is just insane, having the dramatic soprano highs and the Contralto lows, her range, timbre, legato etc, is just amazing!!
I am shocked that I have never heard Florence sing until tonight. What an amazing voice. Completely underrated. I have lived in Philadelphia all my life and maybe heard her name twice but never heard her sing. Just simply amazing. The Voice and interpretation is wonderful. Thanks.
She's clearly got it all down. No question - beautiful voice, beautiful technique, and she fells the music more than most.
But she's playing fast and loose with the tempo here, something I'm more accustomed to in Wagner, and maybe early Verdi, but very much not later Verdi.
It's obviously intentional, and I applaud her for finding a very unique and stirring portal of Eboli, but I can't quite tell how I feel about it. Given the razor sharp tempo of the rest of the opera I'm torn.
Stunning! The short cut C-flat doesnt bother me at all. It is at least sung and is on pitch - not screeched and flat by so many other mezzos and even sopranos. It is really baffling why she was so underrated. The voice is so beautifully even, rich and creamy and she was always so stylish in whatever she sang. I heard her sing a wonderful Adalgisa live!
She always sings from within the music, there are no gimics or effects. A big hit with the audience, she makes a beautiful sound and if the high c flat is short on this occasion-- a live performance where mishaps can happen- she is still great here.
Brilliant!

One of the most versatile and refined mezzos the MET had.

Florence sounds great as always, and she looks FABULOUS...didn't she used to be a lot heavier?
