Quick note on this. Do *NOT* do anything like this using lighter FLUID. I did a similar trick at a party once and ended up in hospital with some pretty nasty burns :(

One thing I've done in the past is "pour" butane into a bottle, and then again pour that bottle into a flame of some sort. Sometimes you get a really interesting gust of fire accompanied by an interesting whistling sound.

@nooneyouknow22 exposer time. the flash of fire burns up to quickly to produce enough conducted heat to burn you hand. if you use alcohol, it takes longer to burn and thus more time to conduct enough heat to burn your hand. due to the rate butane burn at, you would need a lot to burn you hand. you can due this trick with propane but it produces more heat so be careful with it.

I used to do this in high school, did all sorts of tricks....fire all over the place. I made fire swords, fire fountains, slow burns over the fingers (can't do that too often....heat). Try both hands closed and ask a friend to pump the gas inside, about 10 seconds worth then spark it, you can pump your hands to direct the flame where you want it to go. One time me and a few friends were goofing off in drama class and I literally gave him a fireball to the face, no moustache and no eyebrows.

You can actually get the flame to burn longer before you open your hand, I used to light cigarettes like this all the time (when I used to smoke). One more important thing to stress here is that it will only work with a lighter that has the spark wheel separate from the gas lever. Many lighters have the two of them combined, so you can’t get the gas to flow without a spark.

@treehugrurthluvrsupr In my experience, if you hold your hand closed for too long after sparking it (there is a small flame burning at the opening at the top of your hand, which can't be seen in this video), then it can be uncomfortable. But no pain so far.

@YeeshaOfMyst ---Awww, dammit! You're right! At least the error was in the direction of my conclusion. Maybe you can gimmee a break, the only resources I had at the time of my epiphany was an empty bus stop at 11 pm, a stinky cigar, and killer back pain. I was just psyched I got it to work.

I'll chalk this up to my progress in overcoming my paralyzing perfectionism. :-)
