Depends on many variables. Mainly whether the scope is zeroed properly and whether or not the shooter is any good or not. This video is useless. I shoot better with my 17hmr than my 22wmr. The 17hmr is way more accurate.
this looks like a joke to me.....hmr shoots 10 shots and 22 mag shoots 2 or 4 whatever....hardly a fair competition but im assuming thats why your chuckling in the video.....but i would like to know WHAT is the accuracy difference of the two rifles jokes aside and what guns you were firing and if any modifications have been made to triggers bedding etc.
I think in wind and maybe longer ranges that might be right , but that group from the 17 was pretty bad and that doesnt seem to represent 17hmr's maybe the gun didnt like the ammo , wind , shooter?but we got people hitting dimes and people hit qauter size groups of 5 rds with a HMR, I thinking either with ammo it likes are gonna be so close the difference is more human then mechanical , course thats likely often the case, tighter toleranced ammo has to be better for accuracy all other things =
take the 22 wmr out to 200 yards or so i get a 1 inch group with mine i shoot fiocchie rounds 40 grain with a bc of .157 and a speed of 1910 feet per second with equivalates to 14 inches of drop or 7 moa up and at 300 yards 42 inches of drop and 21 moa up
what i find weird with the 17 and 22 rounds is that the standard .17hmr has much better penetration on steel. i was shooting at a steel target made for .22 caliber ammo and the 17 hmr just almost shoots thru it in one shot, now they are i think somewhere from 1/8 in. to 1/3 in of steel and the 22wmr barely makes a dent even with full metal jacket rounds. just amazing how they produce that much more of a crater... so yeah it takes more rounds from a 22 wmr to match 17 hmr shot
@reno93535 .22WMR is MORE affected by the wind! Check Federal's Ballistic data on their cartridge selector. The Ballistic Coefficient is worse for .22WMr vs. .17HMR, that's one reason why .17HMR is so accurate. Jesseshunting(.com) also had an article stating this, but said that BOTH are affected by the wind enough that it's about the same.
@FastZrider Is it a wider crater or deeper? I would think that a V-Max bullet would make a wider crater due to it's explosive nature. Be sure to use similar bullet styles when comparing the two. What exact bullet design were you using with the .17HMR? Often it is stated that .22WMR is better suited for Coyotes than .17HMR due to it's heavier bullets. They carry more power to 125 yards. Now I read if you shoot Coyotes with .17HMR, do a Headshot.
@ntrudr800 its both wider and deeper, i tried 3 or 4 different kinds of 22 wmr rounds and nothing made as big of a crater as the .17hmr. now this was on a spinning target too, ill get a pic of it or a vid and post it up on here
Lol dude I dont know what kind of rifle you were shooting there, but a decent rifle like a marlin or savage model 93 will kill it with a small group all touching eachother. I would check that riffle.
@ae86razer marlin an savage arent decent rilfes mate there the in the lower end in build quality an finish. CZ, Anschutz, Browning are far better rifles all round yes i know that the Anschitz is a really pricey gun but you get what you pay for. I have a CZ 452 an so does my best mate an they both do a 3 shot group in 1 MOA at 100m ive got the Lux an he has the Varmint with the heavy bull barrel. Im not having a go at ya mate but just wondering what isnt as good as marlin or savage ?
@ntrudr800 heres the title to the video of my targets from the 22 and 17 rounds.... " 17hmr vs 22wmr...VErsus steal target " Youtube is being dumb and wont let me copy the url into the post
@ntrudr800 well gun is the 1 with the regular barrel. It is true the bull barrel doent heat up as fast an coz its heavier you get less flick from the barrel so in a way his is more accurate but thats not to say mine isnt, ive nocked off foxs at 200 odd meters with mine no problem
90 percent of these comments are terrible. If ppl added that .17 HMR was the most accurate RIM fire round.Maybe thats what they mean i dont know. And not to knitpick but stop calling the .17 HMR a rifle. The statment "accurate rifle" refers to the GUN, not the caliber its chambered in.A rim fire can never compete with a centerfire round to round..a 17gr bullet in 5mph wind is blown 9 inches at 200yrds 3.5 at 100 any one of those flyers coulda been due to a gust. 17 HMR is good but its not ALMIGHTY
@devonwesticles You can have accurate cartridges such as the .17HMR. It is designed with precision vs the .22lr. You will not see the .17HMR cartridge in low quality bulk packs. It's design precision is why it's so popular.
@CHOPERUS23 I was thinking maybe the guy shooting the ,22wmr sucked, or maybe the gun was not as accurate. BUT I hear the .17hmr guns are very accurate vs. .22lr/wmr.
a retard ahahahahhaha love it!!!!!! and yeah the 17 will out do the 22 wmr its got much better accuracy especially when coming out of a savage bull barrel hooked up to an accu trigger!!!!!!!
@jono999s Don't compare those rim fire rounds to a .223 or .308 pal, remember the .17HMR is a rim fire round with a velocity at the muzzle being around 2,550-2,100 fps and the bullet is around 17-30grains in weight. Nothing like a center fire .223 at all. They're several reasons as to why these groupings are like that. Maybe the wind was acting up which can greatly affect the light .17 round. Maybe he was being an asshole and doing that on purpose to make the .17 look bad who knows?
???? "the most accurate rifle out to 200 yards" ???? REALLY? Not even if we were just talking rimfires would that comment be true. The 17 hmr is a pretty accurate round but at anything over a 100 yards, even a 5 mph cross wind is going to ruin your day. 22 WMR holds up better in the wind, that's just a fact. Especially if you're shooting out to 200 yards (Something a rimfire isn't made for).
Bullshit! have you ever fired a 17hmr? probarbly not then. The myths about wind are myths indeed. even in wind I have hunted foxes with a friend out to 250 yards using a savage varmint barelled 17hmr and it's bang on. Please have some education regarding the rifle you critisise before doing so.
@CHOPERUS23 Gotta call bullshit on 250yd. shots in the wind. Good rifle scopes have bullet drop compensators but nothing to compensate for the wind at 750ft. The small .17 bullet is susceptible to wind drift at ranges as close as 100yds. With your rifle sighted at 200yds. the bullet drop is over 8 inches at 250yds. I have shot many .17s and even with the heavier bullets the wind is always a factor at any distance over 125yds. Please educate me, I'm doing something wrong!!!
You must be doing something wrong mate. Are you canting your rifle? Get a spirit level attatched to your scope to make sure your level when you shoot as canting right will make your point of impact be more left. The .17hmr is a fantastic calibre that up to 300 yards in wind will hardly be beaten due to the high velocity. Only thing that will beat it its the .270 and .240 as they are also very high velocity as im sure you are aware.
@CHOPERUS23 The .17, as fantastic as everyone wants it to be, is still not a great flat shooting round. The energy is barely sufficient at 100 yds. for consistent kills. At 200yds. the energy is only 79 ft.lbs. at 300yds. it would be approximately 34ft.lbs. and that is shooting the highest velocity 17 gr. bullet. The velocity of that round at 300yds. would be around 800ft. per sec. . I will stick with my .22-250 40 gr. at 300 yds it still has 600ft.lbs. and is going around 2600ft. per sec.
2 shots don't make a group.

@FastZrider .22wmr creates a wider channel wound and packs more energy. It's also less affected by wind.

Why not try some different brands of ammo in the HMR? Maybe you have but do a side to side test with the ammo that shoots best in each rifle.
Also a comparison of the effect of crosswind on each caliber would be very interesting.
