Now, I wasn't even alive when this game came out out, but this looks really innovative for its time. I'll have to try it someday.
It is kind of a shame as to what has become of Electronic Arts. I mean, it has never been a gathering of saints, but they had published a lot of good games. The older Medal of Honor games and American McGee's Alice come to mind. EA just doesn't make those kinds of games anymore.
If you have an Atari 400/800 and 4 people I really can't think of a better game to play. Its a total blast. I've had it for 20 years and still play it. Even though I have a i7 9 gigs of ram and ATIs best this old game has something that can't be found in any of the new ones. They are attempting a online remake of it. Go to planetmule dot c
. Still not as good as the atari version but it will give you a taste.
I played this game so many times that I can still hear the music. I no longer have a c64 and miss this game. It was the best game of all time, even if the graphics are crude by modern standards.
This game is still elegant enough to be worth playing. It's a rarity: an old game that one can actually grow into, despite having been raised on much more technically advanced interfaces.
You need human opponents though--AI is terrible even now, and it was abysmal then.
Dan Bunten (or Danielle after the sex change) was an awesome game designer. My favorite C64 game of them all was Modem Wars also designed by him, this was a rock solid game you played over the modem, one of the first of its kind with realtime moves and chat (no turns), no bugs, no out of syncs ever.
My friends and I always swore by Mechtrons, we were convinced they had an all-around better efficiency with running around and planting MULES.
I did an experiment once and chose the one with the long neck, thinking it might give me an advantage in the auctions by "sticking its neck out" and bidding first every time... results were inconclusive.
One of the best games of all time for people who have played it. And yea it does look like et running by doesnt it lol. I have this on my commodore 64. Very addictive and the mule tune is something you never forget definatley one of a kind.

If I try really hard I can.

@Schnitz1 I still think spore is good. Though the maxis version is better, and EA changed it :( you can't even get the old version now...

Man, that intro is insane for the 2600. Quite impressive. Nice and long music, too!

This is actually the C64 version. A 2600 version is a great idea, however. Homebrew 2600 community, get on that one!

This tune is in Spore <3

Cool, I just fell into the Spore time sinkhole yesterday, where is the M.U.L.E. theme in the game?
Umma6umma 3 years ago
It plays randomly when you are selling/buying things from another race during space phase.

Ha ha, hilarious. Thanks for the info.

Wow, that's quite a nice easter egg from the Spore developers. Awesome. :D

This game was the culprit for missed deadlines at university for me and the boys back then.
Awesome C64 game.

This was one of the best games ever! Makes me wish I had my c64 still!

Fun games can be made that arent ultra-violent, game designers are just lazy.
You could get 4 young kids and set them up with this game today. And once they learned it would have a blast playing.

It was pure brilliance. While trying not to be a game, it turned out to be one of the greatest classic strategy games of all time.
I can only home that someone, someday, codes together an online multiplayer remake. Maybe even one for more than four players.......

You said it. Easily one of my favourite computer games of all time, probably only beaten by Civilization in terms of time spent playing it.
