  • I appreciate your videos as a physical geographer by interest and degree. Toowoomba, in Queensland, Australia was struck by a very damaging flash flood on 10 January 2011. Caused several deaths and cost the Queensland State Government several hundred million to fix. Can't post a link because I'm having trouble with Youtube, but try searching "Toomwoomba flash flood" and clicking the one with 7 million hits.

  • @kiwigeofreak

Thanks Kiwi. I have seen that video a few times ;) Amazing footage.

  • @rankinstudio

It is interesting watching the various clips you have compiled here. Some seem to be rather thick and don't move as freely as a purely water based flow would. Others seem to flow more like a lahar. I imagine it is quite exciting to be on the spot when one of these events happens.

  • @kiwigeofreak

It is a lot of fun for sure. The behavior of the floods tends to come from the amount of debris in the way. If there are multiple floods in one year, they "clean" out the drainage basin. If there is only one or two, they tend to be carrying more logs and bushes and take on that more lahar look.

  • Awesome! i seen these on planet earth, apparently they can travel over a hundred miles from the source thunderstorm.

  • @bugatti102

Thanks. Yes, they can. Some of the ones I film have traveled well over 40 miles.

  • Wow you can see why they say dont camp in creek beds if that mud hit you u'd be cactus man it would just grind you up.

  • You need to take "Amazing" out of the title. Boring. Zzzzz.

  • @mercy777ish

OHH LOOK! Another critic on the internet. What a surprise.

  • Wow, great vid shoot...man your guys RocK!

  • wow that's a really thick sludge rolling from the mountains

  • Just curious, but what kind of soil would yeild the white foam we see in most of these clips rather than the darker color in the first one, which I assume could indicate a high clay content?

  • @ripplecutbuddha

Yes, very high clay content. It is draining in late cretaceous sediments, coastal deposits, and shales.

  • dont get caught in that--that mud and debris is thousands of lb's and it would knock a strong man down and drown him in 3 to 4 inchs of water due to him not able to get back up.

  • @Stan6468

Yup, the density of water is close to silicate rock. So it is like a rock flow in density. Doesn't take much to wash you away.

  • @rankinstudio so u can walk on that water?!?!?!!?!?!! that would be awesome

  • @supertrain99

As it exists in a different state than rock (solid) water (liquid). No, you can't. The average density of water is 1g cm^3, sedimentary rock is about 1.7 - 2.3g/cm^3. Water is some dense stuff. You want to walk on water, you can always go find a frozen pond.

  • @rankinstudio not stand on it like jump on it cuz u said it was like silicate rock. so if is as dense as it you could walk on it or like jump on it like corn starch and water

  • @supertrain99

You are getting your states of matter and densities confused. You cant walk on molten lead, but it is more dense than rock. It is a liquid lol. This is a flood, it has a lot of debris in it including rock, but no, you can't come close to walking on it. You would be beat to death and drown at the same time.

  • 2:47

Me: Um dude look behind you

    Dude: Wha? OH SHIT

  • did u see the body in the froth at 3:04?

  • @XxMODERNWARFARE2x Then how r u commenting on dis vid?

  • @123viperdude Thats the point. Its a joke. And learn to spell.

  • TOO GOOD... GR8 JOB...

  • Why am I suddenly craving a latte with extra foam?

  • at 2:48 just looks really weird, great way to catch a flash flood tho

  • kayaking

  • it's all mud..

  • 2:40 that's intense looking, a wall of debris and water comin at you, wild

  • its kind of scary but really cool at the same time

  • Really great video, Well done

  • I tried to tell them not to build a vinegar bottling plant next to a bicarbonate of soda factory but they wouldn't listen

  • @joetol hahahaha

  • the most amazing flash flood footoges I´ve ever seen

  • @XxMODERNWARFARE2x Thats inbosible youre alvie -_-

  • Good God! I am glad I saw this...I am moving to Tucson and had no idea.....

  • @XxMODERNWARFARE2x

    Sorry to hear that.

  • Thank you for making me understand how arroyos/flashfloods work. Creeks in Ohio don't behave that way. They get dangerous, but they don't go from dry to roaaring in a heartbeat. Amazing.

  • Hey, curious, are u following the same river or different ones?

  • Thats some seriously cool shit

  • Looks like near Moab, UT.

  • Grab a tube, go for a ride

  • Water from the ocean to the land and travelling far. The water isn't deep.

  • So thick lol!

  • Never expected the frothy appearance...

  • One of the scariest things I've ever seen.

  • 0:22 water

    3:04 mud

  • where you standing in the path that it was coming because that was cool how it was coming to u

  • Kind of reminds me of the Universal Studios flood set except your footage is WAY MORE COOLER!!

  • Neat footage.

  • For some reason, I wan't to pretend it is a monster and run away from it.

  • that looks soooo weird!

  • Amazing footage. In some shots, I'm reminded of the movie "The Blob".

  • Looks like a landslide, those western flash floods arent no joke!

  • Wow. Sludge!

It's amazing how it moves so fast, even after it's caught all those plants/rocks/branches and a lot of earth in it, :D.

Would have loved to seen these for myself...sadly I live in England :(

Not much chance of getting to the desert XD

  • Nice! Are you Rachael's brother?

  • @matthewfahey

I am actually. You must know her from working on the river?

  • Comment removed

  • Wow it's moving so fast! Now I tsunamis can engulf a city whole!

  • You guys should get a gopro HD Hero.

  • yes the dessert is the best place for flash floods

  • Comment removed

  • kinda looks like a flash flood of lava in some clips ... cool video tho ...

  • Fantastic footage! Brave men!!! Thank you for sharing this extraordinary footage!

  • How did you resist drinking the second flash flood? It looks frothy. I would have started drinking it and saying 'mmmm, cocoa!'.

  • Awesome videos!

  • These are amazing videos.. well done. how did you manage to be there right before it happened?!

  • @Elahe1958

    Lots of waiting around. :)

  • @rankinstudio Is this something to do with your profession or you follow floods (if that is what one should call it!) as a hobby? I am very ingrigued ..

  • @Elahe1958

Hobby, but the footage does get leased for programming on tv.

  • @rankinstudio Is this something you do as hobby or is something to do with your profession?

  • i never saw a better video of flash flood, ialways wondered how water can occupy vast flat area all of a sudden.great work.but isnt it risky/

  • Saw this in my Geology class. Excellent video

  • 2:45 I would have been well over the banks by that time.

  • Thank you for doing & uploading this Sir

We don't get the likes of this in southern Poland

  • Awesome footage - well done.

  • the people who disliked this either hate 240p videos or have lost loved ones to flash floods

  • How did you show up at the right time to video these?

  • I have never seen the begining of a flash flood before. That was great....thanks for sharing!

  • Very nice videos of southwest flood events!

  • i like the sound of the water lol

  • Great footage! Thanks for sharing.

  • thanks for risking you safety to let us see this amazing stuff :)

  • i wonder if any animals got trapped in it

  • awesome footage

  • 30 dislikes? Maybe they need to find a world where floods never happen. As for me, I'm glad folks like rankinstudio catch these amazing events of nature, for us to see.

  • Brilliant footage mate.

  • Where did this happen?

  • @jeep4jeep

Southern Utah. It is multiple floods on different days over a few years.

  • @rankinstudio

    Tell me something.......

How long does this go on for and how far does the water travel???

    Amazing vid by the way!

  • @hearts76100

Depends on the amount of rainfall. They can run from 4 - 12 hours long. Sometimes longer. The water sheds are massive and the drainage systems are very long. They can travel 50 + miles.

  • Quite remarkable footage; gives you an idea of the relentless power of flowing water and mud. Did you see film of the massive flash flooding in Towoomba (Queensland) earlier this year? This was described as an "inland Tsumani". An entire small town downstream was erased from the face of the Earth in the blink of an eye. Some of the dead have still not been located. Nature can be ferocious.

  • looks like a giant wave of santorum!

  • looks like my explosive diarrhea after mexican food nite =P

  • How in the world do you get ahead of these floods? Pretty amazing. Also, in the second flood the water looks almost like marshmallow fluff. What caused that? Thank you for the incredible footage.

  • hop in a kayak and let the flood take you to werever it wants!

  • In the very beginning as the water is coming down, how tall would you say the water is at that point? It looks like its somewhat deceiving from where you are standing... I have a feeling its quite high.

  • Pity you weren't in West Minot, ME in August 2008. We had a storm that dumped over five inches in less than an hour when we'd already had a ridiculously rainy summer. A stream that was barely ankle-deep was moving one-ton boulders, took out a bridge, and nearly took out the culvert downstream. Another, even smaller stream almost took out a second bridge; it flowed into the brook and cut back at least a six foot by ten foot section of bank. And as far as I know, nobody filmed it.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I've always wanted to know what the start of a flash flood looked like without being swept away !!

  • it looks like wet cement rollin down the hills

  • @diesesmadchen

It has a similar consistency as well. The stuff is very dense, carrying a lot of rocks, mud, and debris.

  • @rankinstudio Nasty nasty stuff

  • @diesesmadchen it is.....

  • That water looks delicious...

  • Awesome. Nice job and cool Jeep. I had a 74 Renegade back in the day. Great vehicle. Cheers, A

  • the force of that water would be epic with thousnds of tons pushing from behind most drownings occur when people think flash floods are harmless then get caught in a powerful current trying to cross or swim in the deep ones are a worry but any flash flood can be unpredictable

  • it looks like a living thing !

  • That water? looks very very very dirty.

  • k whats the dif between a flood and a flash flood

  • @fallinghairlesscat

A flood can happen over the course of hours, days, and even thousands of years. They can be tides, or shifts int he amount of water held in ice caps. A "flash" flood usually shows up within minutes. Takes you by surprise.

  • @rankinstudio Especially nasty if you camp in a riverbed. Happens a lot here in Oz. The rain can be off, beyond the horizon, and the flood will still follow the course of the riverbed and take out a camp site.

  • @rankinstudio hence 'FLASH' !!!!!

  • 29 dipsticks have watched this why the hell would you dislike this freaking troll's.GET A JOB!

  • @TheGrizster

    Sir, you are awesome.

  • poor ants

  • loojs like a goo monster

  • how the hell did u get out of there alive????? : /

  • What. Are you superman or something? How did you keep getting in front of it like that. Cool.

  • its amazing how water can do all that

  • one more thing... are these river beds being filled up again or are these flood paths?

  • nice. nature is beautiful when it is not deadly. it can also be beautiful when it is deadly. i like how you risk getting swamped to get a few last seconds of video in. they were definitely worth it! also i have never seen flood waters that white foamy color before. any idea what is causing that?

  • @eeoy this is what is called a debris flow. there is so much sediment in the water that it no longer behaves like water, more like concrete, which explains the relatively low speed at which it moves. these flows can float large boulders and cars because the fluid is so dense. they occur in areas with steep terrain and a dry surface which is easily erodible, and are therefore often seen in areas recently affected by wildfire. search debris flow to see more, they can be very energetic and scary

  • you would be dead if you slip and can't get out of it's way in time. Dangerous stuff but good footage.

  • chocolate milkshake flood

  • how did u get ahead of the flood in so many places? the flood iss moving so fast, i am glad u are safe

  • new road pavement technology

  • This is really cool! Nice shots. It's got a rumble to it I've noticed.

  • @RaelinMaePan

Yea, the rumble is pretty intense when you are standing by them. Large rocks are smacking on the bedrock of the wash and it shakes the ground a bit.

  • This is really amazing footage you got here rankin, you were very brave to stand so near the dangerous flood. Thank you for showing it for all to see and enjoy. Watching this reminded me inmediately of the japanese tsunami of march 11, 2011, in both instances i felt like the flood was alive, eating and swallowing everything, like a hughe liquid hungry worm with its own will and determination to digest and mash all things in its path. A strange worm with inmense strength but short lived.lol.

  • @otirudam

    Thanks :)

  • Awesome

  • Ment to say they put a minutes new York for day after tomorrow tsunami part?

  • That would be cool for making miniture scale films!!!!! Is that how 20th century made DAY AFTER TOMMOROW? did they use this then put a minutes New York for the tsunami part?

  • lol a miniature japan

  • I have to say it was A PRIVILEDGE watching your work!

Thank you so much for posting this. !!

  • chocolate milk and regular milk????

    jk

    but that is scary

  • Dam.....that tumbleweed at 3:51 didn't stand a chance......nice footage!

  • that looks awsome

  • Great footage,,, well done!!!

  • Its Frothy Man !!!

Wow great footage and example of an unstoppable force from mother nature. Hear those rocks tumbling and grinding like a million tons of concrete being poured out !!

    Good job Rankin !!

  • @stevesvids

    Thanks Steve :)

  • 1:26

Look at all that coors light! :D

  • hell yeah!

    awesome video....loved it!

  • thankyou i enjoyed it. look up tidal bore and nova scotia two islands parsborough. water fascinates me

  • seen a great flash flood back in the seventies in the de grey river in the north west of west australia, was an amazing site ,river was about 30 metres wide at the point where i seen it,came as result of a cyclone that dumped heap of rain far inland, there were dead sheep trees and cows floating in the Tzunami of a wave in front, that were probably in the riverbed when caught by the flood, wish I'd had a video camera then....

  • @sulray Had a friend caught in a flash-flood in Australia, so she climbed into a tree, so did the spiders.

  • really thick muddy sludge. I was hoping to see footage fromw hen the water becomes more clear but that probably wont happen would it?

  • @vncnzo Naw, the water is carrying a lot of sediment. This is part of the Colorado River drainage system. Before the built a bunch of dams on the Colorado, the water was very muddy all year.

  • Lol towards the middle of the video, that doesn't even look like water anymore, just sliding mud.

  • wow thats amazing. thanks for putting it on :)

  • It's like a desert tsunami. Crazy how dangerous these are.

  • i think the one at 2:37 would be scary shit to see coming at you

  • had one here in england like a year ago the only one iv seen it was sunny then 5 mins later 3 foot of water xD

  • I'd be getting my gold pans out after it dried up.

  • scary stuff. this just happened here where I live, in Australia. you want to be glad you're still alive to tell the tale mate. anything could have happened.

  • excellent job keeping ahead amazing footage fantastic to see thanks for posting

  • excellent job keeping ahead amazing footage fantastic to see thanks for posting

  • 0:44 that's how u make a rain milk shake lol

  • It's life Jim, but not as we know it.

  • Thumbs up if you saw Pantera - Floods before you saw this!

  • End of the world - -- - - oh yeah!!!

This is just footage of a natural

occurance that allows you to have

another drink of water and be able

    to flush your poop away.

    GREAT FOOTAGE THANKS -

  • every flood plain was made this way. lots of silt = great film job.

  • Thats not water...

  • Excellent footage. It's a shame that these discussion boards, whenever dealing with a phenomenon even remotely in the sphere of science, always bring out the religious nuts. Overcompensating, perhaps? Regardless, this is wonderful footage of a mild flash flood that is common to the American Southwest, although rarely so nicely captured on video. I'm afraid it's not a sign of the apocalypse that some seem to be hoping for, but, in fact, is an extremely common event in geologic time.

  • That is some great footage. Thanks for sharing.

  • that waters grotty

  • @soledejay2000

Thats interesting. I figured these processes have been going on for millions of years...helped shape the planet. Crazy theory I guess.

  • @rankinstudio

    LOL I know, right?

At least that's what I always believed. I think I'm going to remain skeptical until the very end. The only way I'm going to believe that the world is ending is when it actually ends.

  • @soledejay2000 ALLAH AKBAR!

  • @soledejay2000 I find it so hard to believe people still think floods earth quakes are caused by god or gods please read some books on science or thor will lightning bolt your arse.

  • @gongme brother whatever your science are saying Allah says in Quran 1400 years ago. you should read the Quran and findout.

  • @soledejay2000 on judgment day, you judge YOURSELF

  • @77DonkeyKong77 My dear brother,On judgement day allah will judge everyone.Nobody can get away from him.If you read Quran you will find the solution.

  • @soledejay2000 thats right

    and you are allah

    allah is your inner child

the further you have strayed from your true being, the greater will be your fall

I know because i am he

    Daniel

  • @soledejay2000 thanks. since your judgement day is already here. i hope you will stop doing jihad now

  • Thanks for the great footage!! Probably wont catch something like this in city life.. All the angles were nice and took alot of effort to keep getting ahead of that..

  • @TRUTHBETOLD10

    Thanks :)

Check out my most recent video, its in 720p and a very large flood.

  • @TRUTHBETOLD10
