Great explanation of the racing line! I've read a lot of books about this, but never heard it summarized so well. I want Leo to pop-up when I tell people that I track my car and they ask "oh yeah? what's the fastest you ever went?"
The racing line depends on what you are facing next the late apex is used for corners entering straight aways. It's far too simple to just say late apex every corner that doesn't work.
Most Porsche's have oversteer to hit the inside apex hard and stay off the exit outside wall. Most AWD have understeer push including GT-R.
Traction control brakes the inside rear tires to reduce understeer, this is major reason I pass on getting a 650i or other Grand Touring cars.
928 has Weissach axle which rids understeer w/o driver aids, automatics still kick in limiters from the ecu which retard power to rear wheels to avoid spins, manual 928 would let drivers power out the slide.
Sweeping a long turn +100mph with bumps, most will turn yellow when they see the outside wall and try to dive to inside, only they end up sucking straight into the wall at exit, I always hug the outside until the last moment and shoot for the apex corner like a Kamakazi ending up behind the inside car but throttle thru the turn far from outside wall past apex, the other guy is scrubing off speed to avoid outside wall and is sawing the wheel for traction. Most cars have understeer and ride walls
Un-related question about blown diffusers. That raspy noise at part throttle, are they retarding the spark like in anti-lag system to maintain exhaust gas energy so there's less drop in downforce? I would ask on the SD forums but we're still waiting for that.
@scarble Think you are thinking of it tin the right direction. Not exactly sure waht they are doing, BUT I have read about running the engine in sme way to maintain exhaust flow for stabilized downforce.
@LeoParente Where did you get the picture of the red GTI because that is my old roommate. he has a number of track videos and that car is very quick! check out meatstick. It will only understeer if he forces it to but we all know that is not the quickest way so he doesn't. He has battled porsches and ferraris.
yay, awesome episode. Sure I already know this stuff, but it's still good, needs to be hammered in sometimes right? I don't know how useful it is to tell people who don't know this, either you get it or you don't? I've tried teaching people, it's a slow process. Is racing natural or can it be learnt?
Next, talk about hairpins, e.g. the three on Tsukuba. Do you really not "float" pedals on those hairpins? I suppose it's different in reality, with a clutch, to GT without.
I was watching the ending credits to Gran Turismo 5 and recognize Leo Parente - PDCA Inc. I was like that could be this Leo on Fast lane daily, is he the same guy?
I disagree a little with being on either gas or brake, but not both... In karting i learned to left foot brake and would use trailing brake with a little throttle to keep the clutch loaded and the revs a little high. This allowed a quicker pickup off the corner instead of allowing the 2-stroke to get bogged down.
I reemployed it in Solo events in a FF sedan to control four wheel drift on sweepers with a throttle blip to set the tail out & a little brake to reduce steering but keep accelerating.
@g00sampson And with a certain turbo I raced, I found myself doing the same [in certain corners]. This falls under the nuances of those complexity / special conditions. But, shows me you were thinking, aware of what was going on, then trying things to get the max exit speed, laps, etc.. Good job.
@g00sampson Dude he is talking in general circumstances, there is always going to be the other random scenarios where you can benefit from keeping the car under constant control
@g00sampson I was just saying, there is no need to disagree because Leo is not telling you how you should do things, hes only teaching everyone with what he knows the same way you are. So i see we are at an impass?
@Bansheeflyr : Ah, I see your point. I wouldn't say it is an impass, we just both needed to explain ourselves. Good day, and we'll look forward to the next episode!
That's my GTI at 5:03! The picture is from an event at Daytona last year. I've got some in-car video with data overlay on my channel. Thanks for the awesome videos (as always). Keep up the good work.
can you talk about chicanes? those always confuse me, especially the ones with long/radius changing first bends. you know which track im talking about :O
@thewhitenight : I'm no expert like Leo but chicanes typically require you to sacrifice the first corner for a better drive off the second portion of the chicane. Long sweepers with a changing radius could require a double apex or a long apex that allows you the best exit out of the corner complex.
i am from Bathurst and love everytime i see Mt Panorama in your videos. a lot of people may not know this but its a public road and anyone can go for a drive,,, speed limits apply of course!! thanks FLD been a fan for years. Greeting from Australia!!
Thank you Leo, up until today nobody has been able to explain to me why the this way was better, so i had been using the geometric line haha. Leo, you're the best :)
If you botched the previous corner (or sacrificed exit speed to make a pass), you can push the braking point for the next corner back a bit, as you won't be going as fast.
In the dry, once you figure out your braking points and line, it's pretty much a matter of just executing that plan consistently. But when it's raining, your braking points change every single time around the track depending on how wet the track is.
Also, concrete and painted berms are very slick when wet!
Very nice Leo, very nice, althought; can you tell us again -why is it that you don't do the Shakedown on Mondays?? It seems kind of pointless to do a race review show almost a week after every other race.
Also, love that Italian track map and you should definitely keep it as a background.
@mellowdalyricist How was that comment supposed to be anything but ignorantly insulting. The women in the South are not all fat. You do know America has more than NASCAR, right? Grand Am, SCCA World Challenge, Indy/CART,, Time Attack, ALMS, just naming a few US series using road courses.
Also try not to "LOL" your own comments. Laughing at your own "joke" is just an admission you know it isn't funny.
Wow wow wow.... The knowledge is just gushing out of Leos mouth. Thanks for clarifying the myth about the racing line. I didn't know there was so much involved with that.
i was jackin it in the computer room completely naked and my mom walks in and i yell for her to go away, but she just stands there kinda looking around, then she walks OVER TO ME and grabs the stapler which is like right next to me. and walks out. i just sat there for 30 minutes because i couldn't believe she actually walked over to me. then i watched FLD and felt a little better
teach me if I'm wrong. I feel the late apex line is more useful for cars with more power. if you're driving a road car under 200hp, you may better off driving on the geometric line, the car is under powered that you won't be able to make up the time you sacrificed at corner entry and in the corner. unless there's a really really long straight ahead.
i've been trying to get a certain lap time in karting so i'll put these tips to good use and shave that extra .010 seconds off the time. thanks Leo! you did it again!
Hopefully I can help a LITTLE with those who have trouble understanding a BASIC line. What I've learned when I first started karting is that the straighter your wheel is when turning, the faster you're going. Ofcourse there's many variables and flaws in what I just said, but you start changing it up once you have more experience. This is how I(as in myself) started out getting faster, I'm sure it's not the most efficient way, but it's how I learned. I still have a lot more to work on though xD
This video was so good, you guys should do this more often with more topics, like physics between rally racing and tarmac circuit racing and so on. Cheers.
The hardest thing for me is actually finding the breaking points on the track... :( because of that my time still are pretty irregular, and I always have different entry speeds...
@OSemeador going a little slower to get more consistency will give you more of a "feel" on were and how to go faster, otherwise your time will be spent more on not crashing rather than getting faster.
@OSemeador the time at which you break depends on the exiting speed of the turn before, if you break as late as you can all the time and exit fast all the time then it will be easy to keep a consistent and hopefully faster lap time just try, and when luck points you in the right direction you go from their and remember the breaking points and the speed you exited the turns, you'll therefore know when to break.
@1123anon Thanks for the tips guys... xD I'll start writing the breaking points, I'm hoping that in doing so I'll start remembering the different breaking points in different corners and in different tracks...
@OSemeador if you your car isn't screaming bloody murder on the exit, it means push harder, push and push to get out the corner fast, then when you approach the next corner always hit the breaks on full and make sure you are brave hit it late if you go offtrack then you know to break earlier, just don't crash, also when you break and turn the turning force is reduced because their is deceleration so break before the turn so you can turn easier and faster
@OSemeador obviously their is a lack of turning while accelerating too, but thats no where near as time killing that the decelerating force can do and also you have to accelerate halfway through the turn anyway. their are some turns that proves that deceleration effects turning. at times you think you have to break but in reality you just have to let off the gas, which has deceleration but not as strong as breaking so very little turning force is lost, or if possible keep a constant speed.
@OSemeador but also don't crash lol, i hope this helped you buddy, i kinda have the feeling you know all this already but i hope i have taught you something :)
@OSemeador That's what Leo is saying: You need to pick out un-moving reference points for your braking points, such as "a car length past the 300 foot marker" or "right before the big crack in the pavement". Start conservative, then adjust them until it feels right. Write em down if you have to, then you'll have a good starting point for next time.
@OSemeador this is where walking the track comes into play. If you can walk it you get a better feel of how much space is actually between the corners. Then start picking actual braking points represented by physical points on the track. Most tracks will have something out there to mark braking points. it can be anything. Something on the wall a crack in the track whatever. Then the key is to string all those corners together and get consistent entry speeds.

This video was so good, you guys should do this more often with more topics, like physics between rally racing and tarmac circuit racing and so on. Cheers.

The hardest thing for me is actually finding the breaking points on the track... :( because of that my time still are pretty irregular, and I always have different entry speeds...
OSemeador 10 months ago 40
@OSemeador going a little slower to get more consistency will give you more of a "feel" on were and how to go faster, otherwise your time will be spent more on not crashing rather than getting faster.
prodriver1 10 months ago
@OSemeador don't some people use trees or other things on the track to help?
larssonk22 10 months ago
@OSemeador buy gtr2 or f12010 and practice the same track a LOT! done closed
veigadevil 10 months ago
@OSemeador the time at which you break depends on the exiting speed of the turn before, if you break as late as you can all the time and exit fast all the time then it will be easy to keep a consistent and hopefully faster lap time just try, and when luck points you in the right direction you go from their and remember the breaking points and the speed you exited the turns, you'll therefore know when to break.
1123anon 10 months ago
@1123anon Thanks for the tips guys... xD I'll start writing the breaking points, I'm hoping that in doing so I'll start remembering the different breaking points in different corners and in different tracks...
OSemeador 10 months ago
@OSemeador if you your car isn't screaming bloody murder on the exit, it means push harder, push and push to get out the corner fast, then when you approach the next corner always hit the breaks on full and make sure you are brave hit it late if you go offtrack then you know to break earlier, just don't crash, also when you break and turn the turning force is reduced because their is deceleration so break before the turn so you can turn easier and faster
1123anon 10 months ago
@OSemeador obviously their is a lack of turning while accelerating too, but thats no where near as time killing that the decelerating force can do and also you have to accelerate halfway through the turn anyway. their are some turns that proves that deceleration effects turning. at times you think you have to break but in reality you just have to let off the gas, which has deceleration but not as strong as breaking so very little turning force is lost, or if possible keep a constant speed.
1123anon 10 months ago
@OSemeador but also don't crash lol, i hope this helped you buddy, i kinda have the feeling you know all this already but i hope i have taught you something :)
1123anon 10 months ago
@OSemeador That's what Leo is saying: You need to pick out un-moving reference points for your braking points, such as "a car length past the 300 foot marker" or "right before the big crack in the pavement". Start conservative, then adjust them until it feels right. Write em down if you have to, then you'll have a good starting point for next time.
jmalsam 10 months ago
@OSemeador this is where walking the track comes into play. If you can walk it you get a better feel of how much space is actually between the corners. Then start picking actual braking points represented by physical points on the track. Most tracks will have something out there to mark braking points. it can be anything. Something on the wall a crack in the track whatever. Then the key is to string all those corners together and get consistent entry speeds.
