  • Bathurst FTW

  • Bathurst!

  • great video!

  • just beat gran turismo

  • i love this man(no ohmo ;)

  • Great explanation of the racing line! I've read a lot of books about this, but never heard it summarized so well. I want Leo to pop-up when I tell people that I track my car and they ask "oh yeah? what's the fastest you ever went?"

  • all this can be read in the driving skill book of walter röhrl^^only better(guess available on amazon)

  • awesome good stuff

  • preciate tha info bredren been using these tactics but u broke it down more detailed.

  • great tips on racing..im taking this to the go kart track!

  • this is what 90% of Hot Pursuit 3 Racers fail at.

  • why is the thumbnail for this a pic of an R32 Skyline???

  • @101RealTalker To sucker us all in!! >:-O

  • @TheBox67 lol, 4real

  • i already knew about this racing line stuff stuff. show me something else.

  • @emailjosh87

this is not for you... this is for everyone.

  • thumbs up if i clicked this video because of the r32 in the thumbnail

  • more Leo more

  • 3:35 Bathurst!!

Like the second best track falling under Nurburgring Nordschifle

  • this is nerdy...for sho

  • I know the owner of that red golf gti when he mentions understeer. i wonder where he got that picture of his car though?

  • the other shakedown racing tips should be linked here or the link should be posted on the detail box for those who havent watch it yet.

    great tip btw!

  • 5 people drive CAMRYS!

  • @KINZERS13GTR whats wrong with camrys

  • April 16th and 17th!

SSE's insane TA Evo comes out to race at the Hyper meeting 2011, going down in 4 days at Tsukuba.

First time Christine is going to play at the CT230r and CyberEvo home turf... I can't wait.

  • these are great, keep em coming... more SD is better.

  • Nice and informative. Keep up the good work Leo.

  • I <3 Shakedown

  • Best shakedown to date. I'm going to try some of this in GT5 then apply it to the abandoned backroads by my house (no traffic). Thanks man!

  • This is great, even useful for motorcycle riders.

  • You guys mention the Toyota GP at Long Beach but not Formula D at Long Beach?

  • The racing line depends on what you are facing next the late apex is used for corners entering straight aways. It's far too simple to just say late apex every corner that doesn't work.

  • Leo knows his stuff.

  • Comment removed

  • where is the new EP ? is this daily or what ? if its not plz remove the word daily.

  • This guy looks like he is going to explode at any second..!

  • Awesome even if i know most of this i learnt a lot still!!!

next time make an episode on sharp corners and especially shifting gear while taking a corner!

  • He should also have include something about planning thinking ahead for the later corners.

  • Most Porsche's have oversteer to hit the inside apex hard and stay off the exit outside wall. Most AWD have understeer push including GT-R.

Traction control brakes the inside rear tires to reduce understeer, this is major reason I pass on getting a 650i or other Grand Touring cars.

928 has Weissach axle which rids understeer w/o driver aids, automatics still kick in limiters from the ecu which retard power to rear wheels to avoid spins, manual 928 would let drivers power out the slide.

  • Sweeping a long turn +100mph with bumps, most will turn yellow when they see the outside wall and try to dive to inside, only they end up sucking straight into the wall at exit, I always hug the outside until the last moment and shoot for the apex corner like a Kamakazi ending up behind the inside car but throttle thru the turn far from outside wall past apex, the other guy is scrubing off speed to avoid outside wall and is sawing the wheel for traction. Most cars have understeer and ride walls

  • Un-related question about blown diffusers. That raspy noise at part throttle, are they retarding the spark like in anti-lag system to maintain exhaust gas energy so there's less drop in downforce? I would ask on the SD forums but we're still waiting for that.

  • @scarble Think you are thinking of it tin the right direction. Not exactly sure waht they are doing, BUT I have read about running the engine in sme way to maintain exhaust flow for stabilized downforce.

  • @LeoParente Where did you get the picture of the red GTI because that is my old roommate. he has a number of track videos and that car is very quick! check out meatstick. It will only understeer if he forces it to but we all know that is not the quickest way so he doesn't. He has battled porsches and ferraris.

  • @LeoParente it's at 5:01 if you need a refresher

  • yay, awesome episode. Sure I already know this stuff, but it's still good, needs to be hammered in sometimes right? I don't know how useful it is to tell people who don't know this, either you get it or you don't? I've tried teaching people, it's a slow process. Is racing natural or can it be learnt?

Next, talk about hairpins, e.g. the three on Tsukuba. Do you really not "float" pedals on those hairpins? I suppose it's different in reality, with a clutch, to GT without.

  • Gets better every episode. Keep up the great work.

  • Wow im surprised, not one person here noticed that one of the first images they used for a corner on a track was from iracing :)

  • "Insert your joke here" ouch, bad choice of words.

  • @SsJets104 what? why? thats a great line....

  • See KIDS racing isn't as easy as it looks

    WRX Owner

  • Awesome episode!

  • You are not ALWAYS looking for fastest exit speeds.

In some scenarios you are looking for fastest entry speeds.

  • @LaiPt Like which ones?

  • Now let's just say goodbye to Derek D for the next week :)

  • I was watching the ending credits to Gran Turismo 5 and recognize Leo Parente - PDCA Inc. I was like that could be this Leo on Fast lane daily, is he the same guy?

  • @ShinWR1 Yeah...... Helped them a bit with marketing, partnerships, and a certain OEM. Didn't know they were going to do that. Nice team.

  • @LeoParente cool thanks for replying!!

  • Very well explained, Race teacher Leo. Thanks!

  • love it love it love it !!

please make a separate play list for shakedown uni

  • I disagree a little with being on either gas or brake, but not both... In karting i learned to left foot brake and would use trailing brake with a little throttle to keep the clutch loaded and the revs a little high. This allowed a quicker pickup off the corner instead of allowing the 2-stroke to get bogged down.

I reemployed it in Solo events in a FF sedan to control four wheel drift on sweepers with a throttle blip to set the tail out & a little brake to reduce steering but keep accelerating.

  • @g00sampson And with a certain turbo I raced, I found myself doing the same [in certain corners]. This falls under the nuances of those complexity / special conditions. But, shows me you were thinking, aware of what was going on, then trying things to get the max exit speed, laps, etc.. Good job.

  • @g00sampson Dude he is talking in general circumstances, there is always going to be the other random scenarios where you can benefit from keeping the car under constant control

  • @Bansheeflyr : I was just adding my $0.02 and a little experience. We're all here to learn so what better way than to share?

  • @g00sampson I was just saying, there is no need to disagree because Leo is not telling you how you should do things, hes only teaching everyone with what he knows the same way you are. So i see we are at an impass?

  • @Bansheeflyr : Ah, I see your point. I wouldn't say it is an impass, we just both needed to explain ourselves. Good day, and we'll look forward to the next episode!

  • great episode leo!!

  • Leo can you talk about rally pace notes? PLEASE !!! P.S. i love shakedown with Leo best part of FLD

  • @cossaintnick Ugh. I know nothing about! But, added to the list of things to research and / or find someone who does! Sorry, but thanks.

  • my chassis snapped today :(

  • That's my GTI at 5:03! The picture is from an event at Daytona last year. I've got some in-car video with data overlay on my channel. Thanks for the awesome videos (as always). Keep up the good work.

  • This is helpful for gt5

  • can you talk about chicanes? those always confuse me, especially the ones with long/radius changing first bends. you know which track im talking about :O

  • @thewhitenight : I'm no expert like Leo but chicanes typically require you to sacrifice the first corner for a better drive off the second portion of the chicane. Long sweepers with a changing radius could require a double apex or a long apex that allows you the best exit out of the corner complex.

  • FLD is going to Long Beach?

Are any of you competing in the Celebrity/Pro Race?

  • Great shakedown this week, enjoyed it a lot.

Also, awesome footage of Bathurst. Undoubtedly the best race track in the world

  • @XR8xSHOCKWAVE sry,but no,nordschleife owns them all^^

  • i am from Bathurst and love everytime i see Mt Panorama in your videos. a lot of people may not know this but its a public road and anyone can go for a drive,,, speed limits apply of course!! thanks FLD been a fan for years. Greeting from Australia!!

  • wow that was really informative. very nice vids! keep them up!

  • @randomdaz Yeah, it's footage of Jenson Button going round in a McLaren F1 car :)

  • i love his instructional vids...

  • Thank you Leo, up until today nobody has been able to explain to me why the this way was better, so i had been using the geometric line haha. Leo, you're the best :)

  • thats bathurst at the top of the mountain

  • Leo should do a segment on driving technique like this sometime during the non racing season... or when nothing happens, make it it's own segment.

  • FLD should have SHAKEDOWN U on fridays and SHAKEDOWN racing news on monday

  • @evan1855 Everyone should thumb up evan1855's comment.

  • what??? is there no line that tells you where to brake and accelerate on the track that disapears on the straight. i was told gt5 was a sim??

  • @thebossisheretostay Lololololol

  • Great show as always Leo. I think we need a Leo show 5 days a week.

  • EVO FTW!

  • Thanks for the tips. Gonna go race now and see

  • loved the bumper view over the top of bathurst

  • So many people

    So little F1 seats

  • A few more tips:

If you botched the previous corner (or sacrificed exit speed to make a pass), you can push the braking point for the next corner back a bit, as you won't be going as fast.

In the dry, once you figure out your braking points and line, it's pretty much a matter of just executing that plan consistently. But when it's raining, your braking points change every single time around the track depending on how wet the track is.

Also, concrete and painted berms are very slick when wet!

  • Great show Dude !

  • I love this show

  • awesome

  • Now thats what I'd call a great show .. ...

  • Explained in Forza 3 guide.

  • great tips

  • Leo's a guru

  • Very nice Leo, very nice, althought; can you tell us again -why is it that you don't do the Shakedown on Mondays?? It seems kind of pointless to do a race review show almost a week after every other race.

Also, love that Italian track map and you should definitely keep it as a background.

  • FLD = Finally we get Leo Day!

(Though much love to the other guys as well.)

  • Thanks Leo, I always raced with the "shortest line through a turn" mentality. I'll put you're advice to good use this summer!

  • Great stuff Leo

  • Drawing a line around a beautiful woman would be a very interesting way of drawing up a new track layout. Kinda' like the Nazca lines.

  • @DocWolph Thats what they did with Nascar, only problem is that women in the south have lost their curves due to all the KFC in their diets. lol

  • @mellowdalyricist How was that comment supposed to be anything but ignorantly insulting. The women in the South are not all fat. You do know America has more than NASCAR, right? Grand Am, SCCA World Challenge, Indy/CART,, Time Attack, ALMS, just naming a few US series using road courses.

Also try not to "LOL" your own comments. Laughing at your own "joke" is just an admission you know it isn't funny.

  • @DocWolp wow you have to be the most oblivious person on youtube. its called a "joke" you fvcking mongol.

    btw, lol.

  • Keep it up FLD. Superb job Leo!

  • Leo should have been the technical editor for Need for Speed shift. That game fucking SUCK ASS!!

  • DAM! thank you Leo so much! the greatest relative video by far!

  • great show! hey, why not upload this videos to a separate channel? or is there a dedicated playlist for this vids?

  • awesome awesome show leo!

  • Do you know the background looks like Dominoes not carbon fiber.

  • Wow wow wow.... The knowledge is just gushing out of Leos mouth. Thanks for clarifying the myth about the racing line. I didn't know there was so much involved with that.

  • Wow, some good info there. Ithink really great drivers don't even think about all that stuff though, it's more just feel and memory.

  • leo good show!

  • Actually i wanted to hear about KIMI

  • i was jackin it in the computer room completely naked and my mom walks in and i yell for her to go away, but she just stands there kinda looking around, then she walks OVER TO ME and grabs the stapler which is like right next to me. and walks out. i just sat there for 30 minutes because i couldn't believe she actually walked over to me. then i watched FLD and felt a little better

  • MAKE ME WANT TO PLAY NFS SHIFT 2. unless you know any more realistic games o.O.

  • @bobiscool07 F1 2010 way better most realistic game . shift is arcady

  • leo do you offer coaching?

  • This is like a cheat code for GT5

  • Where's Derek D?????

  • Hey I love these videos, but i cant never find any schools or anything that can help me get into racing. Any tips?

  • THANKS LEOOO!

  • teach me if I'm wrong. I feel the late apex line is more useful for cars with more power. if you're driving a road car under 200hp, you may better off driving on the geometric line, the car is under powered that you won't be able to make up the time you sacrificed at corner entry and in the corner. unless there's a really really long straight ahead.

  • @TheRacingwits wow, that was bad..

  • stop telling people our secrets Leo. =O

  • @ImTheSlyDevil WHAT, TO STOP US MOSQUITOES FROM SPAMMING YO ASS!?

  • Leo, how could you tell everybody our little secret. Now every kid on Forza and Gran Turismo will try that and my advantage is gone

  • @BiggWormdpg What you said. I thought I was the only one in the world who had a late-apex bias

  • i've been trying to get a certain lap time in karting so i'll put these tips to good use and shave that extra .010 seconds off the time. thanks Leo! you did it again!

  • Hopefully I can help a LITTLE with those who have trouble understanding a BASIC line. What I've learned when I first started karting is that the straighter your wheel is when turning, the faster you're going. Ofcourse there's many variables and flaws in what I just said, but you start changing it up once you have more experience. This is how I(as in myself) started out getting faster, I'm sure it's not the most efficient way, but it's how I learned. I still have a lot more to work on though xD

  • Pause. Think. Rewind. [Repeat]~~~ Awesome show!!

  • leo should have his own youtube channel

  • that was a nice footwork clip near the end, was neat to see some pretty slick rev-matching going on.

  • awesome!

  • good show leo

  • thay need leo in the next grand turismo.

  • best segment of fld

  • FAVOURITED!

  • heh... concrete has more grip than tar, right?

  • Best Show Ever.

  • Leo is the best teacher I have ever had...

  • I loves this.

  • Awesome part from 1:08

  • leo next tip show me how to set up my car on nfs/gt5

  • Continue the good work, hope to see similar videos from you

  • Leo, great show as usual. Love the driving education.

  • This video was so good, you guys should do this more often with more topics, like physics between rally racing and tarmac circuit racing and so on. Cheers.

  • HELLO FLD!!!

  • I now have a gretaer respect for professional racing drivers

  • Awesome show, Leo!

  • Leo, are you gonna be at the NYIAS? cause i just wana shake ur hand and say this show is awesome

  • The hardest thing for me is actually finding the breaking points on the track... :( because of that my time still are pretty irregular, and I always have different entry speeds...

  • @OSemeador going a little slower to get more consistency will give you more of a "feel" on were and how to go faster, otherwise your time will be spent more on not crashing rather than getting faster.

  • @OSemeador don't some people use trees or other things on the track to help?

  • @OSemeador buy gtr2 or f12010 and practice the same track a LOT! done closed

  • @OSemeador the time at which you break depends on the exiting speed of the turn before, if you break as late as you can all the time and exit fast all the time then it will be easy to keep a consistent and hopefully faster lap time just try, and when luck points you in the right direction you go from their and remember the breaking points and the speed you exited the turns, you'll therefore know when to break.

  • @1123anon Thanks for the tips guys... xD I'll start writing the breaking points, I'm hoping that in doing so I'll start remembering the different breaking points in different corners and in different tracks...

  • @OSemeador if you your car isn't screaming bloody murder on the exit, it means push harder, push and push to get out the corner fast, then when you approach the next corner always hit the breaks on full and make sure you are brave hit it late if you go offtrack then you know to break earlier, just don't crash, also when you break and turn the turning force is reduced because their is deceleration so break before the turn so you can turn easier and faster

  • @OSemeador obviously their is a lack of turning while accelerating too, but thats no where near as time killing that the decelerating force can do and also you have to accelerate halfway through the turn anyway. their are some turns that proves that deceleration effects turning. at times you think you have to break but in reality you just have to let off the gas, which has deceleration but not as strong as breaking so very little turning force is lost, or if possible keep a constant speed.

  • @OSemeador but also don't crash lol, i hope this helped you buddy, i kinda have the feeling you know all this already but i hope i have taught you something :)

  • @OSemeador That's what Leo is saying: You need to pick out un-moving reference points for your braking points, such as "a car length past the 300 foot marker" or "right before the big crack in the pavement". Start conservative, then adjust them until it feels right. Write em down if you have to, then you'll have a good starting point for next time.

  • @OSemeador this is where walking the track comes into play. If you can walk it you get a better feel of how much space is actually between the corners. Then start picking actual braking points represented by physical points on the track. Most tracks will have something out there to mark braking points. it can be anything. Something on the wall a crack in the track whatever. Then the key is to string all those corners together and get consistent entry speeds.

  • loved this show

  • best show yet

  • Fast lane daily is getting better and better. You have really improved the last two years! KEEP IT UP GUYS!

  • Bathurst! Nice!

  • @trehhz button at bathurst to be precise

  • @o0bananaman0o Yeah that's what I assumed too.
