16:20. WRONG. A bacteria tents to get immune to a type of antibiotics quite fast. In the future we might get in terrible trouble because there won't be any king of new antibiotics coming out anywhere soon. The research to create new antibiotics is long, the costs are high, the time it takes is 10+ years, and the amount of time the company's can sell the antibiotics is slim because bacteria gets immune to it fasts.
I really would like to see a playlist with him taking sides on debates, it would be interesting change to have someone smart and educated to do it for a while.

One mistake Sal, bacteria is 10% of the mass if water is removed. So if you weigh 150 pounds, around 70% water, if you remove the water. You're 45 pounds of non-water, so 4.5 pounds of non-water bacteria? It's hard to determine I guess.
I just wanna say thank you! For me you are the best teacher I have ever come across. I like it when you repeat things, remind us again and again. I am going to watch all your videos 59 of them. So far I am very happy and it is very easy to understand you even for people like me with English being my second language. Keep up the good job Bro!!!
rodents carry a bug that make them behave suicidally, and humans can also contract this bacteria. I think it's called Leptospirosis. Other bugs cause insects to climb grass stalks to get eaten by sheep so the bug can get into the sheep's liver, where this little "fluke" continues its life-cycle. Bacteria are probably also in charge of main stream politics.
MRSA-Staphylococcus aureus-is a pretty damn tenacious bacteria, especially when it's acquired in hospital (HA-MRSA). If it reaches the lungs, the patient seems doomed even though medication exists to try to control it.
I've seen bacteria, when I was in paramedic school. I couldn't find one that wasn't ugly. Thinking of them being all over me grossed me out.
Bacteria are classified into two groups, gram-positive and gram-negative, based on differences in cell wall composition detected by Gram's staining. Gram-negative bacteria are more dangerous to other life forms than gram-positive bacteria. Bacteria are extrenily adaptable with regard to their physiological adjustment to changes in the enviroments. They are the principal decomposers a of most ecosystems.
some people make light of your videos, disrespect , but my opinion is that they are nothing short of informational seminars. Keep up the GREAT work Sal!
The majority of prokaryotic organisms have cell walls. That means that both Bacteria and Archaea do *tend* have cell walls, but they're not made from cellulose (so they're not the same as the ones you'd find in eukaryotic plant cells, for example).
great video .. love the colours and the diagrams .. im amazed at how well and fast you can draw a human head !! i cant draw to save my life :P oh.. i also love how interesting you make biology xD
would it be possible, just possible, given enough time, that bacteria could form large creatures like us? could they form larger colonies that incorporate different bacteria that do different functions, like us? If there were aliens made out of bacteria, I want to meet them.
Bacteria don't replicate. That's supposed to be the difference between bacteria and viruses. I don't remember how bacteria multiply; but viruses attach themselves to your RNA and copy the structure so it can consume the cell with copies of it itself. That's why finding a cure for viral diseases is so difficult. They can't kill the virus w/out destroying the whole cell.
That's not right. Bacteria do replicate. Like an animal cell they can replicate their DNA and split in two. Maybe what you're remembering is that viruses cannot replicate on their own - rather they must infect a host cell.
Viruses don't multiply the way you described. They have their own genetic material, DNA or RNA, and they get the cell they infect to copy their DNA and to produce the proteins necessary to assemble new virus particles.
@vickiormindyb HAHAHA... bacteria don't replicate?? may be before posting this comment you should of simply googled it. have you heard of bacterial replication? bacteria and human cells replicate in a very similar manner, so they do replicate. and there are viruses that affects your DNA as well not only your RNA. there are so many successful medications available for viruses.. yes they do have some side effects but can get rid of the virus from you body.
Binary fission is considered different than mitosis? Both still have cytokenesis and probably the whole prophase/ metaphase/anaphase/telophase thing. I suppose bacteria don't have centromeres and theres probably not the same mechanism for pulling the DNA apart and distributing the genomes between the two new cells.
Don't think I've head an classes talking about prokaryotes since 8th grade or so.

@crismesa I used to live w/ a guy who was a doctor of medicinal chemistry. He was a biochemist.
He used to try to explain this to me but always went way over my head. If he'd explained it the way you did, I would have understood it- a little.
BTW I always thought gram-positive were bad. Isn't MRSA gram-positive?
As a health technician, I've seen the horrors of MRSA. Now I'm going to have to look it up.

i think the most interesting fact in this video is that approximately 10% of me is bacteria working in symbiosis
also according to the statistics he gave, the mass of a typical bacteria has about 180th of the mass of a typical human cell

I didn't say that right. Bacteria DO replicate, they just don't need a host cell to do it. Viruses use cells, b/c they can't replicate without them.
This information came from my supervisor, Britt--Senior paramedic.
