The reason they "faked" things in the trailer was to show what could be possible. As a form of proof of concept, what they were aiming for gameplay wise.

yeah...this is one of the many reasons people want a time machine, so that they could go back and make sure they RELEASE THIS GAME! ..or at least the OTHER one that seemed to have a good female matchup to Duke which would've made a funny game to have him try to hit on her and fail so many times! and bullshit to the paradox! I paid $16.99 for my copy of this game, thankfully I didn't pay full price, and it's one of the most boring pieces of shit I have ever played.This is why I never buy anything new. The regenerating health and load times were such hunks of dog shit...I loved how 2 shots would kill me b4 the gay health bar refilled and then I"d have to wait 45 seconds only to be killed by a dildo boss again. Also, it seems 80% of this game is walking around and touching shit for some pointless shit 2 happen. FUCK!

This version looks badass. It even had a different story. The aliens were actually parasites which infected citizens and EDF soldiers, turning them into monsters. A "Cycloid Empire Strikes Back" kind of story with no emotional impact, humourless jokes and dull linear levels...
Why wasn't DNF released as this? This looks amazing for it's time. Yet Broussard "thought it wasn't good enough"? Fuck you George Broussard. You are the biggest douche of the industry along with Bobby Kottick, Peter Molyneux, and Peter Moore. The final product isn't the worst game ever, however after looking at this trailer again, a lot of things seem to be same as the final project. This old code must still be out there. Someone needs to find it and release it in it's original form.
I read an interview a while back with an Ex-Dev at 3D Realms. Basically he said this trailer was 100% mock up. Non of this was real, they just faked it all for the trailer to give the false impression that the game existed in some playable state.
@TrewstuffMusic Actually, a dev cleared this up. The game wasn't near halfway, but 70% of this trailer was implemented and playable, including the Riot shield, motorcycle, boat, and shrink ray.
I got the game expecting this, but I was very disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's still a fun game, but if they released this back in the day it would have been a million times better ='/
The people who are calling DNF game terrible didn't even bother playing through half of it and they are just mad that a game that took 12 years to come out turned out to be an above average/ decent game and not the masterpiece they wanted so they are calling it a terrible game because of it not living up to any of the hype and imo no game can live up to such a long hype specially a game thats has been transferred and tossed around as much DNF has.
This would have been waay better than the final product we got now but I still like the current version I found it to be a fun and decent game it is not terrible as people and critics are making it out to be, bad story? it was serviceable and DN games have never been about story, corny humor, lines and Duke being outdated so you people wanted Duke to turn into a serious, angry or mute muscleheaded guy and DN to take everything seriously the ones who are saying this obviously never played DN3D.
Duke Nukem Forever was good but if had came out when it was supposed to then we would've got a helluva game;14 years only to become good or average is just unfortunate as Id've liked it to be truly memorable but alas no. 3D realms worried too much about other competitors which is why the game engine kept changing again and again. This Duke Nukem Forever's closest rival would've been Half Life 1 had it came out and it already looked better than Half life.....
@ZephernVideos In all fairness Gearbox finished what 3D realms started. Pretty much everything in forever was all 3D realms; the most gearbox did was patch it all up and polish it. Duke Nukem Forever ultimately suffered from inefficent dragged out development thus keeping up with the times was second to impossible. We can judge gearbox based on Duke Begins as that will be a product entirelly developed by them :)

how does a game thats in development hell for 12 years or so end up being made into a worse product in 2011 than it was in 2001.

This is actually the very first time I've seen this 2001 trailer. And I've got to say, it looks pretty phenomenal. What happened to this build of the game? It still has to be around somewhere, right?
The problem is, people are looking at the old games and compare them today.
I find DNF is pretty damn good compared to the FPS we usually get today, it atleast tried to add in some interactivity into it.
The reason DN3D looked superior to DNF, was that DN3D had 2 things; Nostalgic value, and simplicity.
You couldn't really do much more for DNF, the only few things I have complaints for DNF at the time was being a few weapons (should be all of them), and the iconic jetpack should be there.
I wish we got this game rather than the disgrace that they made at Gearbox. If this was released in the early 2000's like it was supposed to, all the drama would've been avoided.
Funny thing is, my big brother told me he actually got to play a demo of an earlier version of DNF. He claimed it was in third person and had a jetpack. Lucky guy... Yeah, it's sad, because this version of DNF looks like so much fun, especially with the half-life 1 style graphics. I love old school games like this...
Guys you have to realize none of this was playable or was even a part of the game. It was one of those teasers to hype up the game and pretend to show like they did anything
I'd rather play this than the new one. If he had voice acting in this one. (DN 3d, he spoke sometimes, but he didn't swear his head off.) People should make games that play well, not games where the main character spouts off profanity and crappy one liners. (CoD World at War is the only one I will forgive for this,)
I said it before and I'll say it again. If this game was released when it should of been, it wouldn't have the critics shitting on it. Instead it would probably be one of the best games of all time.
Gearbox really wasn't responsible for the way Duke Nukem Forever turned out. When they bought the rights, they thought they were getting the amazing game we all hoped it would be. However, there's only so much you can do to a buggy, boring game in the short time they had with it, and they've said, "We didn't go in and say, 'Oh, we know better, this is how it should be done.' We remained faithful to what 3D Realms had made. This is still their game."
They should have released this other than what Duke Forever wound up being. What made Duke 3D great was that the humor and charisma was there, but took a backseat to incredibly revolutionary gameplay. Forever tried to take the humor and sell the game on it, while the lackluster gameplay and repetitivity ruined the game.
I'm glad most of what we saw in this trailer made it into the game in some way or another. The Pregnators getting in your face, General Graves, that keycard scene, the pin ball machine etc.
Hearing an EDF Soldier ask me "Hey pal, what are you gonna do? Save the world all by yourself?" made me smile and laugh a bit. :D
The final DNF was a good (objectively)/great (personally) game, and I hope Gearbox makes an even better game next time.
How can people defend the game we got a month ago? Stupid fanboy's cant admit they spent 15 years on such an awful game. I hate COD and Halo but any Cod and halo game is better than this.
1 more thing. you know those bastards at Gearbox have enjoyed playing these versions no doubt. they got to play the E3 2001 content, and whatever was completed around 2003/2004 which was when the game looked to be at its peak. they are sure enjoying themselves over there while we got shit on :/
@journeytosilius Dude, you have no idea what you are talking about. Everything in this trailer wasn't formed into a game (as far as we know), everything was engine written to make this trailer. And where did you hear that Gearbox got to play the older versions?
Well if they can make those areas and designs in 3D for a trailer, why cant they adapt it into the actual game? why do they make incredible locations and scenes like this only for trailers. it looks like a rendered in-game trailer too, not some CGI stuff which is impossible to put into gameplay.
Btw i just assumed gearbox/triptych got to play the older versions since they acquired all work done on the game up to that point. surely there were playable parts from during the development.
@journeytosilius Well, I'm sure they did have some of the stuff from the trailer into the actual game but we have no idea how much made it in until they scrapped it for the next version. BTW I read that on the Gearbox forums that if you look through the files on the demo then you will see that there are 15 singleplayer levels planned for DLC. Don't hold your breath but maybe some of the levels will be levels from this trailer or something.
Man I sure hope they do add more content for single player in the DLCs. Most FPS games just add lame multiplayer maps for DLCs and nothing more. But heres an example where more singleplayer is sorely needed. I saw that the single player content was finished by triptych like 2 years ago, and only gotten a little polishing done on it since. Well gearbox only had the game for what 2-3 yrs at most? i hope they've been taking this time to ready more of the "lost" content for release.

@journeytosilius I'm in agreement that the 2001 version looked far superior but I must disagree that Gearbox got to play the 2001 material. That stuff was most likely scrapped after a couple years. George Broussard never could make up his mind and that's what caused the game great delay. He would always change his mind and want to add or remove features. He changed the engine the game ran on at least 3 times during development so I'm pretty sure that stuff is long gone.

just finished playing duke nukem forever.... the actual level design, not even caring about the graphics, but the actual levels and gameplay they included in the final product is disappointing to say the least.
looking at this trailer and the 2003 gameplay footage video.. where are all the cool things from those? las vegas lit up at night levels, driving machinegun boat, jetpack battles, better looking ghost town, riot shield, terminator robot.... WHERE IS ANYTHING COOL in the final game?! argh!

The most interesting thing about this trailer is that Duke doesn't say anything. The 2011 version of this game made his one liners the focus, but in Duke 3d (and I guess this version of forever) they were always more of just a bonus.
Too be honest, I liked the atmosphere of this game far more than the final product because it made Duke look like an actual hero. Besides that, Duke Nukem Forever 2011 was immature, predictable, too scripted, unresponsive and filled with glitches.

@shadowkid1993 meh duke 3d still better than any serious sam game all he has are huge levels with little detail and million to one odds that just make the enemies seem dumb. Serious sam 1 final boss reveal was most epic moment of the franchise although the way you killed him was just silly. Jumping platforms around really? Sam's personality is also less memorable.

I would love for 3D realms to continue on the legacy. This game looked like the shit and should have been released. @ZephernVideos In all fairness Gearbox finished what 3D realms started. Pretty much everything in forever was all 3D realms; the most gearbox did was patch it all up and polish it. Duke Nukem Forever ultimately suffered from inefficent dragged out development thus keeping up with the times was second to impossible. We can judge gearbox based on Duke Begins as that will be a product entirelly developed by them :)

how does a game thats in development hell for 12 years or so end up being made into a worse product in 2011 than it was in 2001.
To those comments on don't be hard on the developers, what sort of people do you know that would allow a company to dick around for a decade without a finished product, its amazing they were not sued sooner.

The problem is, people are looking at the old games and compare them today.
I find DNF is pretty damn good compared to the FPS we usually get today, it atleast tried to add in some interactivity into it.
The reason DN3D looked superior to DNF, was that DN3D had 2 things; Nostalgic value, and simplicity.
You couldn't really do much more for DNF, the only few things I have complaints for DNF at the time was being a few weapons (should be all of them), and the iconic jetpack should be there.

I wish we got this game rather than the disgrace that they made at Gearbox. If this was released in the early 2000's like it was supposed to, all the drama would've been avoided.
Funny thing is, my big brother told me he actually got to play a demo of an earlier version of DNF. He claimed it was in third person and had a jetpack. Lucky guy... Yeah, it's sad, because this version of DNF looks like so much fun, especially with the half-life 1 style graphics. I love old school games like this...

I'd rather play this than the new one. If he had voice acting in this one. (DN 3d, he spoke sometimes, but he didn't swear his head off.) People should make games that play well, not games where the main character spouts off profanity and crappy one liners. (CoD World at War is the only one I will forgive for this,)

Gearbox really wasn't responsible for the way Duke Nukem Forever turned out. When they bought the rights, they thought they were getting the amazing game we all hoped it would be. However, there's only so much you can do to a buggy, boring game in the short time they had with it, and they've said, "We didn't go in and say, 'Oh, we know better, this is how it should be done.' We remained faithful to what 3D Realms had made. This is still their game."
So, yeah, blame 3D Realms.

They should have released this other than what Duke Forever wound up being. What made Duke 3D great was that the humor and charisma was there, but took a backseat to incredibly revolutionary gameplay. Forever tried to take the humor and sell the game on it, while the lackluster gameplay and repetitivity ruined the game.

I'm glad most of what we saw in this trailer made it into the game in some way or another. The Pregnators getting in your face, General Graves, that keycard scene, the pin ball machine etc.
Hearing an EDF Soldier ask me "Hey pal, what are you gonna do? Save the world all by yourself?" made me smile and laugh a bit. :D
The final DNF was a good (objectively)/great (personally) game, and I hope Gearbox makes an even better game next time.

Well if they can make those areas and designs in 3D for a trailer, why cant they adapt it into the actual game? why do they make incredible locations and scenes like this only for trailers. it looks like a rendered in-game trailer too, not some CGI stuff which is impossible to put into gameplay.
Btw i just assumed gearbox/triptych got to play the older versions since they acquired all work done on the game up to that point. surely there were playable parts from during the development.

@journeytosilius Well, I'm sure they did have some of the stuff from the trailer into the actual game but we have no idea how much made it in until they scrapped it for the next version. BTW I read that on the Gearbox forums that if you look through the files on the demo then you will see that there are 15 singleplayer levels planned for DLC. Don't hold your breath but maybe some of the levels will be levels from this trailer or something.

Man I sure hope they do add more content for single player in the DLCs. Most FPS games just add lame multiplayer maps for DLCs and nothing more. But heres an example where more singleplayer is sorely needed. I saw that the single player content was finished by triptych like 2 years ago, and only gotten a little polishing done on it since. Well gearbox only had the game for what 2-3 yrs at most? i hope they've been taking this time to ready more of the "lost" content for release.

@journeytosilius I'm in agreement that the 2001 version looked far superior but I must disagree that Gearbox got to play the 2001 material. That stuff was most likely scrapped after a couple years. George Broussard never could make up his mind and that's what caused the game great delay. He would always change his mind and want to add or remove features. He changed the engine the game ran on at least 3 times during development so I'm pretty sure that stuff is long gone.

it makes me wonder where has all this vastly more awesome gameplay content vanished in the final game? what we ended up with are some incredibly boring and uninspired levels/gameplay. but as you can see in these earlier videos, all of this awesome content was created at some point. they didnt find it worth to to update these levels to the modern engine or what? they ended up releasing a piece of crap game. fuck!

just finished playing duke nukem forever.... the actual level design, not even caring about the graphics, but the actual levels and gameplay they included in the final product is disappointing to say the least.
looking at this trailer and the 2003 gameplay footage video.. where are all the cool things from those? las vegas lit up at night levels, driving machinegun boat, jetpack battles, better looking ghost town, riot shield, terminator robot.... WHERE IS ANYTHING COOL in the final game?! argh!

The most interesting thing about this trailer is that Duke doesn't say anything. The 2011 version of this game made his one liners the focus, but in Duke 3d (and I guess this version of forever) they were always more of just a bonus.

Too be honest, I liked the atmosphere of this game far more than the final product because it made Duke look like an actual hero. Besides that, Duke Nukem Forever 2011 was immature, predictable, too scripted, unresponsive and filled with glitches.

@shadowkid1993 meh duke 3d still better than any serious sam game all he has are huge levels with little detail and million to one odds that just make the enemies seem dumb. Serious sam 1 final boss reveal was most epic moment of the franchise although the way you killed him was just silly. Jumping platforms around really? Sam's personality is also less memorable.
