This is great. I've been a big Mike Campbell fan for 25+ years for the same reason most of you are. I learned a lot from him that did me well in 25 years of playing live in local bands. Play inside the song and remember a good hook is everything. In my opinion his best work came after this was recorded. A under rated player.
My best friend loves Mike /VERY/ much along with Tom. Especially the way he looks in this video! <33 :DDDD
She calls him her bunny. x33 [: and she has Mike-attacks to things like this with him. i'm sure she's going to love this. Love you, buddie! :DDDD <333 ^___^
@TheBeatles433 I'm with you hear, but I don't see Mike. I just see alot of great guitar by Jeff Lynne. I would be thinking maybe I got Mike & Jeff mixed up, except Mike has his mustache. Always has to my knowledge. Please correct me if I am wrong. Mike, Jeff, George all played Slide Guitar.
@theart1rm Before anyone goes to correct me. I just corrected myself. I pulled up a Jeff Lynne interview. And now I know Mike is the smooth good looking face and Jeff is the bearded good looking face. Glad I cleared that up.
The American George Harrison IMO....perfect notes every time that do not stick out yet each song is so much less without them. The perfect guitar player that complements a master songwriter.
I love at 5:10 how Tom steals the Confederate flag from an audience idiot, wraps himself in it, obviously thinks twice about wearing it too long, and hurls this stupid symbol at Stan Lynch, who looks seriously worried about getting hit by SOMETHING from Tom.
Nice touch when the tour theme is "Packing Up The Plantation."
What goes through your brain is simply that you are pulling off a riff you know really well, and it is working. When you know hoe to play like this, it is not that big of a deal.
@lightmyfir3 It's all probably mostly muscle memory, so he's probably just thinking about dinner plans, or if the hair's still lookin' good. (I'm not crazy about the horn section and backup singers. Ugh)
dont understand a lot of this guitar talk but hey all i can say is that man the guy can play and its so true that EVERY note is from his heart.. nothing more nothing less.. a master!!!
i believe it's called a Thinline Tele.. although i'm not sure if it's the pickups that give it the name or the semi-hollowbody aspect...either way, they sound quite nice, my buddy has one.
he's using a slide. on the record he's using a 12 string (RICKENBACKER 660) so it sounds MUCH better but yeah thats how he gets it. its a [bottleneck] like in the beginning of free bird (lynyrd skynyrd). if you dont play guitar its used just touching the strings not pushing down and it gives a smooth harmonic-like sound
MY GOD! He's so frickin good. He's so underratted to. Him and the guitarist from The Knack. The My Sharona is done with tapping. Kinda like campbell. They are gods. And rolling stones doesn't know shit about the top 100 guitarist. The gave places to the most well known, not the most talented. Given that Hendrix is godlike, he isn't the most skilled, he may have been the most influencial, but they're are a lot of guitarists. Like Eddie Van Halen, #72 =/ I mean come on.
It's impossible to please everyone with any kind of list on a topic as subjective as music. Granted Rolling Stone magazine has a hard time pleasing anybody with their lists...but I think Hendrix belongs at the top of most guitar lists simply because he basically started it all.
And I agree 100% on Campbell being underrated...all melodic guitarists are. Campbell & George Harrison are two of my all time favourite players.
Oh yeah, Mike Campbell is tres tasty. A tele with humbuckers and a bigsby. Frankenstein time! Very melodic and a distinctive sound, great tone. I don't know what kind of amp he uses.
Very underrated. Awesome. Surely, I thought I would find him the Rolling Stone Best 100 Guitar Players. He wasn't or I didn't find him. I was stunned. Been to 5 T.P & HB concerts. They're fantastic. He is awesome.
Mike Campbell def deserves to be on the top 100 list, but that list is lame, the only few i agree w/ is Duane Allman & Hendix as my top two otherwise the list goes haywire, eddie van halen #72 or somethg what?? he's like top 10 w/ beck/page/srv/blackmore..
mike campbell is flat out the shit. and benmont and stan kick some major ass too. but campbell, my god, i'm going to go listen to some the criminal kind, or it ain't nothin to me
right, most great bands have a team of two & sometimes three major players/writers/singers
as no exception w/ Petty & Campbell. like Page & Plant, lennon & McCartney,Townshend & Daltrey, etc. the list goes on, but its rare that all the members contribute equally.
favorite band of all time. just saw them for the 4th time at summerfest... awesome guitarist but not as good as richie sambora. sorry its just the facts on that one.
there are so many guitarists better than Sambora & Campbell is way better, Bon Jovi are a good show band but thats where it ends they are way over hyped, so is Sambora, give me TP & HB any day now thats a real band w/ great tunes, Bon jovi has two decent songs & they are way over played & a too much bubble-gum. they fit in well in the 80's w/ the big hair bands, now they keep rehashing the same crap, they can't even compete in the country genre..
A Tele with TWO 'buckers?? This guy has some bizarre axes, like a Les Paul goldtop with Gretsch Filtertrons. He can have anything he wants with the way he plays.....
actually the reason his goldtop might look like it has filtertrons is because the original covers for the pickups had been removed. He wanted to get the pickup closer to the strings and the late 50's plastic had started to warp and "gas-off" as vintage guys say. So he just removed them, and those early pickups were actually made with a clear "bobbin" so you can see the copper wire inside the pickups, making them look a little bit like a filtertron pickup cover.
Mike Campbell is the most underrated guitarist ever. He is easily in the top 5 ever. His speed, the way he hits every note so clean, the emotion and of course the melody. He is the master. People stand up and show some respect.
WOW...unless I missed it, Im suprised "running down a dream" wasnt on there. Thats a Mike Campbell classic too. I always watch him when that song is played.
