This movie is a classic. It's a hidden one that's found its audience but it deserves to be bigger. If none of you have seen it, do so. It's wonderful.
Love this movie! It was one of my favorites as a child. I used to act out stories and change things around. This was one I liked to do, I always wanted to be Fiona.
I love the way irish people talk! I love it! I sure wish i had a lovley accent like that. When Irish people sing, it's amazing~ when they talk it's amazing~ I think it's so cool!
Aye, just finally saw it, and I'm glad I finally got to. The black irish are some hard workin' fishermen, they are, perhaps I was in a life before, lad.
Very powerful mythology when told by a 90+ old woman wearing a shawl, in the Gaelic language, as we looked out to sea as children. Patting my black head of hair and saying that one would recognise their own and try and take me was far more powerful than anything I could see in a film.
My grandmother made me watch this movie when I was maybe nine years old. Not only did it scare me to death, I thought my grandmother, who also made me watch movies about homosexual romance and drug use and other things I did not comprehend at nine or ten years old, was crazy. I have a feeling I'd have a better appreciation of this film now.
the selky is a scottish story. I heard it years ago, about the seal woman who married a sailor, and then she had to go back when she found her skin. but it was a scottish tale no an irish one.
lovely movie though. The evacuation is a bit like the one that happened on st kilda.
@Rowan07001484 The Scots were Northern Irish originally who sailed to Scotland and settled there, bringing Irish culture and customs with them, it is just a story that is common between us, and it is Irish, you would be hard pressed to find great variances between us, the Scots did not just appear one day, why do you think that Scots Gaelic is so similar to Irish?
@JAMD456 Is this true? Did some move back after the English started taking over? Is that why you get the term, Scotch-Irish Later on? Also what do the Scottish have to do with this? I am just curious, I love history.
Well ... the so-called "scoti" were gaelic tribes from Ireland. They settled from 3rd to 5th century in western Scotland and formed the kingdom Dálriada.
Eastern Scotland ( kingdom Fortriu & others ) was still pictish then.
@kardancer1 The Scottish as a race were are made up of the Piccish people first (A race of celts that lived there) alongside the Northern Irish of the ancient Dál Riata that claimed part of Scotland as their own. The Irish language and culture spread with time which is where the Scottish people got their language & culture and customs.
:: Thank you, CrowLord13, for uploading this trailer for this awesome Irish tale about selkies & their offspring. I only just saw it last night as a selection in my Netflix™ queue. A must-see, absolutely. Namasté ~ (•8-D
"T'aint a story" I was expecting someone to say at the end ;) Well you never know with selkies and the like hm? I think it's Kelpies who drown people though, and selkies just change from human to seal and vice versa. I could be wrong but anyway, I haven't seen this movie in so long..I need to watch it again. I'd understand it better if I did now. Thanks for uploading :)
You got it right. Typically Kelpies are the ones who transform into beautiful horses or men, and devor their victims. Selkies are usually gentle and most of the stories about them concern female-selkies, though there are male selkies too. ^_^
The folk song 'The Great Selkie of Sule Skerry' is about a male selkie.
Sule Skerry is a real place, btw, thirty miles off the north coast of Scotland between the Orknies and Cape Wrath. It's name is old Norse for Seal Island.
He (and his siblings) were rocked to sleep by the motion of the waves; it was tethered to shore. It's only at the evacuation that someone didn't tether Jamie, and the selkies took advantage of that to steal him away.
This mythical creatures based on the Sylkie legend from the Scottish Orkney isles. Creatures that transformed int a human from a seal. The tale spread south to the other scottish isles and then to Ireland. Just goes to show how the Gaels of scotland and Ireland are so connected we're the same people.
First time I saw this movie in the theater, I cried like a baby. I went a second time and another woman was crying just as hard as I did the first time. Just a wonderful movie.
@SallyImpossible me too. i just saw this movie and it made me cry a lot, in a good way. this was a good movie. love those selkies and those seal eyes are just too sweet. awww. great movie and story and acting.
THis is my favourite film ever.
