  • Hi, using tips shown on a Kikopup video I taught my dog how to carry several items (including a metal spoon!) but now I want her to present me those items, as it's done at the obedience exercise with dumbells. The problem is that when I ask her to sit she opens her mouth and let the item fell, if I tray to hold her mouth close with my hands (softly) she shakes her head, how can I freeshape or teach this behaviour? By the way, great tutorials!

  • @1coris That is a common problem... Do you have a hold cue? That is what I did was teach them to take it, hold it, and drop it. I also would have them hold it in a sit and then stand. Most of the time they will not drop it from a sit to stand. I am not sure why that is. Or you could have them follow you with the item. Say Drop it and click for them dropping it. Whatever you do, you want them to know that they should hold it until you say drop it. Kind of like a release word. :)

  • Great video. I am having trouble teaching my border to lift her back foot (I would like to teach her to lift both separately and on cue). She can back up steps and I have been trying to use that as a starting point. Many thanks, Lynne

  • @lynnehelm Have you tried touching her back leg to see if she moves it when you touch it? Then if she does you can click and treat that, then keep doing that until she will lift her leg right before you touch it and click & treat that. Then do it about 10 times and as she is about to do it, use your new cue. Hope that helps some. You can also have her target something with her hind leg and then lift the thing higher. Easy button, book, post-it, etc..

  • How do you shape the "boy dog" trick?

  • @manatts5 Do you mean the "Peeing" trick?

  • Do you have a website? I would really like to see your content? Thanks.

  • Wow! Even Isabelle is in the video! That's great! It is quite rare for her to be in the videos. Include her more in your videos. I love her! :)

  • wow! your dogs are amazing! i'm currently teaching my 1 year old cocker spaniel to hold a basket (she going very well) thnx for the great video

  • @AllyandBonnie Thank you! That is awesome that you are training your cocker spaniel to hold a basket too! I would love it if you would post a video response when you finish teaching it! :) Have a great evening! Pam

  • Oh what a wonderful picture at the end!! Twix is so smart. Of course if you want a pretty demonstration, you just have to have Isabelle do it! (I was so excited to see her!!!) Bandit was so cute with the Ball Hunt! You have done such an excellent job with your beautiful babies! Ann and Daisy

  • your written description of the steps and then the video make it so easy to understand how to do the things you teach.

Toward the end, after he sits up with the basket, he lifts his back leg and for a second I thought he was going to pee in the basket! :O

  • @anniequilts Thank you! I guess my day job flows nicely into dog training. I am a full-time PE Teacher. :) I love teaching! Yes, that was his "go number one" trick. hehe! He loves that trick! So, I thought I would throw it in there at the end. :)

  • Twix is so leggy!

I've been trying to teach this to benson, but have been slacking off lately! This video encouraged me to try again!

Bandit is so clever, putting the ball in the basket, and Isabelle is gorgeous as usual!

  • @jaymejamjar Thank you! I know how that is about slacking! I have a list a mile long that I need to train Twix to do. ARG! Oh well, in time! The best thing is to just have fun with your dog and all that other stuff will come with time! Take care!

  • great job : )

  • aww cool :D

  • Thanks

  • Great job!! I loved how Twix was a little frightened of the basket in the beginning, but as the video progressed, he really gained confidence. :)

  • @motleymuffin I know, I was very happy that he gained confidence and got over his fear. It was really great for him. If I would have just waited a little longer to do the video because he knows how to carry it now. ARG!

  • Great tutorial! Twix is such a very fast learner! Love Bandit's tricks at the end too!

  • Excellent video, Pam! Very good tips on teaching this behaviour. I see Twix picked up the concept of this trick fast! I am in the process of teaching my cat Kaiser this trick; he's picking it up very quickly. :)

Have a great weekend! We love all your videos. :)

  • @NanaBorderCollie That is so awesome all the amazing tricks you do with your cat! I love it! Twix did pick if up pretty quick even though he was a little afraid of it in the beginning. :)

  • Great point about the letting go clicking... my dog thought he was suppose to let go and we are having some trouble working back on it. I really want him to learn this! One day!

  • Great tutorial, Pam!! :-D Thumbs up and a favorite. Pride stayed 'puppy' for a long time and mouthed/chewed everything he picked up. :-D He finally got it, though. Check out his dumbbell foundations video. Keep the tutorials coming.

    Happy training,

    Marge, Rounder & Pride

  • @rogersmmr Thank you! I will have to check out your dumbbell foundation video! I tried to find my dumbbell, but for some reason it is missing. Shows you how much I work on obedience type behaviors. hehe! I could not even find it for video purposes. hehe
