  • Gorgeous tone brother just another example of why no matter what genre i'm playing, death metal, country, blues, I stick with my stratys...lol

  • @rustycj7 Cheers Rustycj7! Can't beat a Strat... Especially through a high quality tube amp... The guitars just sing!

  • @MikeGarveyBlues Most definately, I've got three strats myself. Stock 50's roadworn, 96' MIM with EMG DG-20, and an 80's scalloped necked MIJ strat. All of them are amazing with my Mesa or my Traynor.

  • ah and you know to use the c7! most people overlook that small, very important detail. xD simply perfect.

  • @JamesOscar56 Cheers James!

  • Great vid mate. You got the tone down. What pickup are you using in the middle. I know about the SSL-1 in the neck but what are you using to blend. Ive got a HSS strat and im whacking in a duncan pearly gates and this is exactly the neck/mid pickup sound im after

  • @StratShredder69 Hi bud, it's a reverse wound SSL-1 in the middle. You don't have to use reverse wound but if you do you'll get hum cancellation when using neck / mid and mid / bridge positions.

  • :D i'm droping a ssl 1 loaded pickguard on my vintage v6 on thursday hope it will sound amazing, i like with stock pickups but mounting these because i'm searching to that frusciante sound.... :D

  • @wretcheddog How does it sound? I've just raised the pups on my Strat a little recently... They sound even more amazing. Those SSL-1's and the SSL-5 are amazing. Wiring the bridge pup to the second tone and rolling it off a little gives a real nice clear, smooth tone!

  • @MikeGarveyBlues they were good until i sold them my vintage v6 now has a lace gold pickguard i got from sigler music (amazing online store, be sure to take at their store on ebay) lace sensors gold sound amazing but i somehow feel that the ssl 1 respons better to a slight/mid overdriven distortion maybe it's just me...

  • hi, very well played i would like to ask you something, i have a yamaha pacifica 112v a cheap but very well made guitar and i'm planning to drop a pair of duncans ssl 1 on neck and bridge and i have also a humbucker with split function on the guitar, but don't really know what to put on the bridge, do these pickups give a classic strato sound? and what could i do for the bridge? thanks....

  • @ivncdo0809 I have the Pacifica 112v guitar too. See my Cavatina lesson... It's a very good guitar for the money!

The Duncan SSL-1's will sound great in the Pacifica. Real vintage Strat pickups and much better than the ones in the Pacifica as you'd expect. Something like the Duncan SH-1 '59 may go well with the SSL-1's. Or something more modern with higher out put if you want more options. Not sure if the SH-1 is coil tappable...

  • @MikeGarveyBlues thanks mike, i was just looking into seymour duncan site and they don't say anything about coil tapping it's written only it has four wire connection, so i decided to take a look at the gfs ones too, their new '59 series for strats look cool , or maybe two ssl1 duncans and a gfs on the brigde really don't know

  • @ivncdo0809 Heard mixed things about the GFS pups. I have their Tubescreamer clone called the 'Greenie' which is great so I don't doubt the quality. Worth checking the Fender site too. I have some article somewhere that did a story on swapping out the pups in a Pacifica. I'll have a dig round for it and see what it says.

With the single coils... if you're looking for a classic Strat sound the SSL-1's are amongst the best you can get. I think you'd want the reverse wound for the middle.

  • @MikeGarveyBlues nice lesson!! having a great time learning that song, by the way i went to a guitar store today, and they have a loaded pickguard for an hss stratocaster ssl1 with a JB on the bridge but don't if strato pickguars fit the 112v i don't have a fender strato yet, i see you have both of them.... would mind to try if fender strato pickguard fits the pacifica 112v? and sorry so much for disturbing have a nice day :D !

  • @ivncdo0809 The Strat pickguard is very different from the Pacificas. On a Strat, all pickups are mounted to it but on a Pacifica the humbucker is mounted into the body and the two single coils mounted to the pickguard. It might be worth getting the SSL-1's for the pickguard and the JB for the bridge. Good combination! If the JB has 4 wires then it can be made coil tappable I think.

  • Im thinking about putting the same setup as u have, but on the seymour duncan website they say the ssl-1 works especially well with a rosewood fingerboard. I also use a maple neck, how is the ssl-1 going with the maple neck? how is the clean sound?. I have an american standard stratocaster all with standard pickups. Is it a upgrade worth while, the ssl-1 needs to be real clean and articulate in the neck. I want to put upgrade it like this :

    ssl-1 neck

    ssl-1 mid

    ssl-5 bridge.

    Thanks! Nik

  • @EspNik The SSL-1 's are very vintage sounding pups. Very Hendrixy. To my ears they sound very articulate. I wouldn't worry about the neck woods too much. It will make a slight difference to the tone but compared to the sound colouration from the pickups, effects and amp / speaker / cab..... Wood types a far, far more important on acoustc guitars than electrics despite manufacturers claims.

I always thought the US Std pups where pretty good. If it was me i'd stick with them.

  • @MikeGarveyBlues But the ones in my Mexican where ceramics. Really harsh sounding so they had to go.

Going from those cheap and nasty ceramic pickups to the Duncans made a massive difference but I don't know if you'd be as impressed with the difference between American Std pups and the Duncans. They certainly won't be worse.

The SSL-5 is a great pup. Needs a little taming though. I've wired that up to the second tone pot so I can roll off a little of the treble.

    Great Gilmour tones.

  • Dude mike! It's phillip! Hell yeah!

  • "Close enough for beginners....."!!!

Would you care to upload your version and show us all how it's done?

The only difference to my ears is that it's in Standard tuning and I use my thumb less than Hendrix. Why? Because it's physically impossible to reach some of those notes with my thumb!!!

  • Arghh... Youtube need to sort the comments function out!!!

  • wonderfull, thats accurate indeed, great sound and play.10 stars if possible.

  • @dcboogie Cheers Dcboogie!

  • @KoleBombs SSl-1 in the neck and middle. Middle SSL-1 is reverse wound. SSL-5 in the bridge. I'm using the neck and middle SSL-1's on this track.

  • @KoleBombs It's an SSL-1 in the neck, a reverse wound SSL-1 in the middle and a SSL-5 (A hotter version of the SSL-1) in the bridge. Im using position two on the switch which is the neck and middle pickups for the out of phase tone.

  • does anyone know what to do at 2:23 on the 1st and 2nd strings i just cant get it

  • Sounds good man! Beside the Duncans, what tone capacitor value and potmeters are in your guitar?

  • .022 250v capacitor

    250k CTS Pots

Inner cavity shielded with copper foil

Entire scratchplate shielded with medium guage copper foil

Need to replace Volume Pot with another 250k CTS as the taper is poor.

Replacing the cap with a Sprague Orange Drop .022 100v

  • Is the pickup you are playing on here a seymour duncan ssl-1? It sounds really good.

  • Hi, thanks for your question!

I have an SSL-1 in the neck, areverse wound SSL-1 in the middle and an SSL-5 at the bridge.

The comination i'm using here is the neck and middle for an out of phase sound.

  • wooow man! it's the same picks there I want in my strato! Nice sound!

  • They're amazing pickups Rafa!

    Well worth getting.

  • you should be black!.........lol.....

  • Sounds good man, I love the tone of your Strat, I am considering selling my Texas Specials and getting a set of SSL-1's.

    Thanks

  • Many thanks for this. It's a really good lesson, very useful !!!

  • And thanks for doing it in Jimi's style instead of SRV's. It seems everyone is always doing his version, and even though I love SRVs version, Jimi is overlooked a lot when it comes to this song. I think it's way better and underrated.

    Great lesson too

  • Cheers Popomczowzow!

You won't be dissapointed with the SSL-1's!!!

Not saying to learn it faster first though. Agree with you that they need to build up slowly.

Another way I look at it is this:

If you can play it at 110% then you'll be able to play it at 100% perfectly everytime.

I wasn't sure about the SSL-5 when I first put it in but love it now. Make sure your SSl-1 for the middle is reverse wound.

  • I know about the reverse wound thing, cause my current middle pickup is.

Also, I read your older comments so I know what you meant about the faster thing.

And just so you know, Jimi has almost no reverb on, if any at all.

And by the way, I raised the pitch of Jimi's version and played it with your version. It was a perfect match. 5/5 great job

  • This video has convinced me to go for the SSL-1 pickups for neck and middle. Some other videos already convinced me of the SSl-5. That's pretty much the perfect pickup set up for gilmour bridge tones, and hendrix neck/mid tones.

But I disagree to a certain extent when you say learn it faster first- I think they should learn it slower and then build up to going faster than the original song instead of just going fast right off the bat. You know, increase the speed till they're really fast.

  • thanks so much for not tuning half a step down...this way I can learn..

  • A new, more in-depth version of this lesson coming soon!!!

  • Perfect man...

  • Cheers guys!

  • almost holy shiiit perfect

  • please upload the patch when you get your boss gt 10 back from roland

  • Had to get a new one from Roland. Had a problem with the power supply or something. Will dig out the patch and upload it to Boss GT Central soon.

  • i must say....very great playing, clean tone, great..!

  • That's amazing! I honestly had to check the key of the Hendrix version to tell this apart. It sounds identical.

Which Duncans are in the neck and middle (I know it's SSL 1 and SSL 5, but what order)?

  • Cheers Bud!

SSL-1's in the neck and middle (Middle is reverse wound) and the SSL-5 in the bridge position.

Incidentally, for any Gilmour fans out there, it's the same pickups as in the new Gilmour Sig Strat

  • 0.0 holy shiz. my guitar teacher just taught me this today though i forgot it. hehehe... thanks 4 refreshing my memory.

  • nice one

  • that was pretty good man

  • wow holy shit perfect

  • Wow! That's the perfect sound!! What strings you using??

  • Cheers for the comment!

    Rotosound Rotopinks Guage 9 - 42

  • yee it is

  • Cheers for the coments guys!

  • damn that's the best freakin' sound of little wing I've ever heard. And all the notes were EXCACTLY like Hendrix's original one. Give it like three weeks or so more, and it will be played perfectly, 'cause now it was a liiiiittle bit sloppy. But it was truly awesome, now I know what to do tonight :)

  • well you played it perfectly, only problem is you need to put the neck closer to the camera cuz i could hardly see how you were playing it

  • great version...I think you've nailed nearly every note here in the intro. Do you know which site has the most accurate tab? I've done searches and the tab I've found is missing key notations, hammers, pulls, etc.

  • i don't think playing it fast is a good way to learn to play it perfect. Because when you play fast you play some notes wrong, and it's no point practising bad habbits.

  • Hi AbbeyNO, thanks for comenting!

In a way, that's my point. Though I agree that playing something fast before you can play it right will yield bad results and sloppy playing.

What I mean is that people should learn to play it right at the correct tempo... Play it slow to start and build up the speed. However, I think it's useful to then learn to play it faster, and to try and get it perfect when playing faster so that you'll always feel more comfortable playing it at normal speed.

  • I think sometimes people (And i've done this myself) build a piece up to the correct speed but are only just comfortable with it. It's just about going that extra mile. I would also advocate putting your own mark on the song once you've learned the notes. Put 'feel' into it, change some notes around. All good steps to becoming a better player!

But... Your comment is a valid one. Learning to play fast will not make you a better player... You have to learn to walk before you can run!

  • Yeah, ofcourse. If you build up the speed it's a good idea. I thought you meant to play it fast right away. You played it very well btw.

  • This song is meant to be played sloppy! You wanna get the emotion and soul in it? Fuck technicalities and accuracy. Save that shit for a solo or a soulless G3 tune.

This particular song is extremely freeform and open to expressive playing. Cherish that characteristic because it's one of the few songs that bares such a trait. Play sloppy.

  • Yeah, of course. But if you want to play it exactly like Hendrix you shouldnt play it too fast and just start with bad habbits. If you want too play it with soul and feeling, of course you have to play it sloppy. Hendrix was the master of sloppy playing.

  • Thanks MGB great lesson i could see where i have been making my mistakes...Thanks Bud oh and welcome to G blast as well.

  • Cheers Ogopogopark!

Glad the video helped you. Look forward to being an active member of the Guitarblast community!

  • A big thank you to the idiot who's marking all my videos with one star.... Grow up!!!

  • Ok I've heard a lot of versions.. but you come closest to jimi!

  • I got a GT-10 myself and I saw you got this sound from there! Its awesome! I would be very interested if you would want to tell me on how to get this sound or how you just did in a few quickly steps would be REALLY appreciated! :-)

    5/5

  • very nice

  • Very, very tight - but feel is also spot on.

    Jimi would approve!

  • Very nice....Master!!

  • your sound is perfect, just 100% perfect!

  • Thanks Bobbieflash!

Very happy with the tone I got from my GT-10 and Strat!

  • Great cover and great sound! Considering your only 18 it's even more impressive! Cheers!

  • Oops, sorry, got it wrong... I thought you were someone else! I thought while writing "That's bizarre, he seems older than 18!"... :o)

  • I wish I was still only 18!!!

    :)

  • Hi !

can you rate the Seymour Duncan SSL-1 Vintage compared to the fender custom shop 69s ?

  • Hi Marc!

I've never had the pleasure of playing a Strat loaded with 69's but I can say without a doubt I love the sound of the SSL-1's and the SSL-5 in the bridge!

Very Vintage sounding. Well rounded and always gives me a seet tone. The SSL-5 in the bridge gives me some extra bite when I need it without being to harsh and trebly.

  • woah i would kill to play as good as you

  • I'm just copying the master!!!

No murder needed... Just a lot of practice!

  • Great tone! Would love to know which GT-10 patch this is based on.

  • Very good of you to post - thanks! I think it might be even more helpful to have the camera zoomed in more on your left hand, to see just what you're doing. I don't really need the pick hand... Of course, if you don't have a camera operator, it's difficult to keep the hand in the frame...

  • Got some new equipment and software so I should be able to get better results, including picture in picture. I might do a follow up vid to this and break it down lick by lick so it's easier to follow / learn.

    Thanks for viewing!

  • if can master his song, my life will be complete

  • this song is amazing and you did it good thank you

  • best tuition i have saw for this tune, grt job done.

  • great playing and tone/effects check my srv/hendrix mix if you have time

  • WOW! That's like a perfect sound! You play it actually right, too!

  • Rhanks for the comments so far, I appreciate it!

  • NICE SOUND LOVELY PHRASING

  • could you make that a little bit slower please?

  • May do a follow up video for this in the future where i'll break it down lick by lick.

  • yeah, that sounds awesome dude

    really great

  • Dude.. that tone/sound is pretty damn close to the original. Well done! =)

  • Cheers Sean! Got my Boss GT-10 to thank for the tone. Excellent piece of kit. Added a touch more 'verb post production.

  • Awesome Mike, great tone and fingers.
