Well, remember this song being played on the radio when it was a hit in 1971 and I was 12 years old. I like the lyrics and the way he sings them, and although I'm way more into rock than country music, I really admire Charley Pride. He was born in Mississippi back in 1938, and we all know that state wasn't a great place to be a black man, so I admire him ever more when I think about that. I'm 52 now, and the song sounds way better than when I was a kid.
@MrRazorblade999 Nice to know you liked Charley........When people say that life is rough, I wonder, compared to what?" i..............s a thought provoking lyric
@digger22082061 Thank you for your kind comment.I saw Charley before he was "BIG" at a USA station in the north of Scotland...........I was maybe 17/.18yrs but his voice always stays with me
I've heard that Charlie Pride wrote a song specifically for opening his concerts. He sang it to make fun of the people who would walk out just because he was black.
Can anyone tell me if this is the song, or is it another one?
Two years ago I used this song for a video presention with pictures of my cowboy steerwrestling husband who passed away in a logging accident. It sure suited him as he never thought more of himself than he should - He was a real"I'm not the worst or the best, I'm just me" kinda guy, but we thought he was the best!!
Thank you for singing from your heart you are the best country singer I saw you at the Stafford Centre the end of July may the GOOD LORD LORD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ,God hAS GAVE YOU A VERY SPECIAL TALENT, I sure would like to see you singing again and you give me your autograpg
Had the pleasure of seeing Charlie perform live. Charlie is not just a great singer; Charlie is also a fantastic Entertainer. Too bad we don't have Country Music like this anymore!!
@1Sharon1Contois1 Thank you for your kind commet Charley has been a favourite of mine since I saw him at submarine base in the north of Scotland.I think in 1964/5
I love Charlie Pride He is a true gentleman I have been to his concerts early on in his career and his sound and his attitude are for real i met in Miami Beach and fell in love with him as a musician.Country Charlie is a dynamic force in country music , he is an icon a legend .God Bless Charlie Pride. He is a blessed entertainer and I think cma should put him in the hall of fame right with his peersPorter merle and many others thanks a greatful Florida Granny
CHARLEY AND HIS WIFE CAME I TO THE GAS STATION WHERE MY DAD WORKED IN DALLAS TEXAS BOTH VERY NICE GREAT MEMORIES MY DAD HAS SINCE PASSED OF CANCER THANKS JESUS MOM DAD CHARLEY PRIDE
"I'm just born to be exactly what you see," that is Charlies way of telling us that yes he is proud to be black, but on the other hand, he is just himself.
@JUMPMASTER1963 jerkoffmaster1963 only fucking hillbillies will like this shit, stupid polack canuck, you are too damn old to live. hahaha fucking old fart should die.
This is who, I am just me! Everyone has to remember we can and what to be some one else but you can never change who you are! So be happy of who you are because I sure the do! Much Love Punk ass Tully
That's a bit of nonsense that gets written in a lot of Charley Pride albums and promotional materials.
Charley sold a lot of records for RCA, I'm sure, but not nearly as many as Perry Como, Dolly Parton, or Alabama, among others. He never really "crossed over" and country records were not big sellers in those years.
Summer, 1971, I was 8 yrs old riding with my dad in his truck hauling pulpwood to the papermill in Erie Pa. They had a Country station and we heard this song most everyday. Takes me right back to that time. Great song, and great memories
