Ok, you're using distortion, but are there any other effect(s) you're using to get that "growl-like" sound. I love the way it sounds when you are playing this song. Appreciate all that you have taught me through your videos. You're the best. Thanks.
i use an Xotic RC Booster ALL the time and would highly recomend maybe checking it out. It has volume and tone controls but it also has a gain control to dial in just a bit of nasty. Thanks for the kind post and all the best with your music!!
Thanks for your instruction. I first started playing this on the bass and then I got curious about guitar. Recently, I've much more time to devote playing and I want to improve my skills. Thanks
Wow you play this flawlessly, killer job and awesome lesson. I was always intimidated by this song, but it actually sounds harder than it is. I don't suppose you have a video for the solo do you?
Dale! Thanks so much again for posting this... was only a casual fan of Journey in the old days and never thought about trying to learn their songd but watched a concert on Palladia today and my GF went nuts over Lights and said I should play it with my friends. So, all things for women... I looked on Youtube and as soon as I saw your posting I knew I was almost home. You're really good in my humble hack opinion. Enjoy your playing and teaching style. Beginnings was awesome too. Chris
hello Chris, i love a lot of Journey tunes but if i had to pick or play only one this is IT! NS is a monster and this tune is just something special. Thanks for your very kind post and i hope you enjoy rockin this one....your friend,
Thank you so much for putting this up, and taking the time to make it understandable! I love this song, and I am finally on my way to getting it right thanks to you
Hey. There you are again! Just found this video...
I'm a relative beginner (mid 40's dad with young kids trying to learn for almost 2 years now). I loved the Free Ride tutorial and this one is just as good, maybe better. Great tone/sound, great playing and great instruction. Thanks.
@tonedr Thanks Dale. I'm actually a musician by trade, just not a guitarist. I was a session player in NY for 10 years and now write and produce music, mostly for film and TV. It's a handy coincidence that my new mid-life passion happens to coincide with my work. haha. Thanks again man.
Very nice playing and tone, seems very Hendrix like. Looks like a nice use of the Am pent scale licks over that C chord section..if you or anyone understands the theory there, does that sound correct. As well as the solo being mostly based around the Bm pent scale. I love learning songs but like to also know WHY it works in theory. Thoughts?
thanks for your kind words and for taking time to watch the video! Am is the relative minor of C and Bm the relative minor for D - so you are correct. When soloing sometimes i find it good to think about playing in the relative minor of a key instead of just the major scale of the key itself.
What are you using for an amp? You nail that tone almost perfectly. I can't get it with either my Les Paul or Strat and my Marshall. Not sure what I'm missing.
i am using a Headstrong Lil King with 1x12 - i'm also putting the guitar through a Fulldrive 2 pedal. Thanks for the kind feedback.....greatly appreciated!!
Thanks so much for the post. I just recently picked up on your lessons, and have learned a great deal - THANKS. Have also had the chance to view some of your acoustic stuff - great job!! Often reminds me of Doyle Dykes !
thanks for your kind post and for taking your time to check out the videos! DD is a HUGE hero of mine who i'm glad to be able to call friend as well - all the best with your music!
i have searched all over the place looking to find out how to play this song and no one has made it sound right.... i have been a journey fan my whole life and i actually thaught you were neal schon for a moment!!! great tutorial man
lol - you are kind - in my dreams i'm Neal!!!! Sure appreciate you watching and great to hear you are a Lights fan as well.....just a GREAT old tune. All the best with your music,
it is a Headstrong Lil King, basically a Fender Princeton clone. It is i think around 12 watts, mine has 1x12. Thanks for your kind post and i appreciate you watching the videos - all the best with your music!
i did take my time and kept looking.i ended up getting.a g&l tribute legacy premium hb.. i highly recommend these guitars for anyone looking in this price.beautiful clean ,crisp and intoned perfectly.takes your playing to a whole new level. glad i took the extra time its hard to believe all the shitty guitars out there for under 700. take your time when looking and play every guitar possiable.deffinatly do not buy a guitar for looks play and listen.
MrPrivatedonut47 since this video he's posted isn't instructive enough maybe you can ask him to come to your house, arrange your L-hand fingers for you while does the R-hand work you, flim the whole thing, and play it back using hologram technology just to make sure you can pick it up you fucking complete and total DUNCE.
first I want to thank you for all the 5 star lessons.great job great songs and great lessons.you also have great collection of guitars.i am getting ready to buy a guitar(electric) for 500 to 700 and wondering what the tonedr would recommend for that price range
@raross6119 I recommend playing every guitar you can get your hands on,(electric) I look for a strait neck, very low action with no fret buzz, plays and feels like silk, great pick ups, not a lot of crap on the tremolo. maybe you can run in to an old guy willing to part with an old Gibson or Fender.
@raross6119 I was really fortunate to buy my first axe for 25 bucks a 65 Fender Mustang with case, still have it. I have all Fender and Gibson in my line up bought my last 17 years ago a custom Strat hand -built by fine luitier, paid him 500,thats the most I ever paid for one. You will come across a great deal just be ready for it. I did many times using this criteria all my axes play great the only problem now is the curse of arthiritus so these jems will be passed down to some fresh new fingers
You are an amazing player. I appreciate the way you break it down. I always enjoyed Neil Schon and you make it possible for someone to play the songs we all love to hear. Eveyone has their own"soul" and you definetly have it. Thanks so much.
Thanks so much. Been playing for a year and a half, and this is the one I've really been trying to work up to. Finally am able to play it :D So happy.
that is great - i hope you enjoy playing it for a long time! We just saw Journey last night - Neal pulled out the strat and once again just killed this tune! Hope all is good and thanks again,
