  • Somewhat sensasonalistic, but great exposition!

  • cool channel

  • to slow your done.

  • hury up.

  • your too slow, a salesman mistake.

  • be carefull.

  • so you acknoledge the rederal reserve act of 1913 and the american banking act of 1864??

  • After listening to this man, I can say two things for certain:

    1. He does not know what art is.

    2. He knows even less about mathematics.

The above holds true for his audience.

It would be nice to assume as much as he, however he never figures in step potential or spinning, twining, and fining which largely opposes the ultimate deterministic math he alludes to. However, he does have a good voice, and a good line of bullshit. He's not even wrong. So good for him.

  • @TheFaustianMan Oh, and if are into this dated hypothesis you should watch the movie "Pi" it was done much better there. However, it is presented as "fiction" which is in inherently more truthful than this presentation or algo-trading.

  • I think my mind just exploded

  • Anyone was reminded by Metal Gear's "The Patriots' AIs"?

  • This gentleman should be a writer. He could produce some stellar fiction based on this.

  • Actually he says actually less than a typical TED speaker, right.

  • Interesting.

  • This is inhuman and sick.

  • iPad ad?

  • What an absolute beast!

  • Another guy that loves to hear himself, does anybody know what alorithm means in math? I love the pictures but, and but, I am a mathematician and I did not understand, I do unerstand this guy has a good mouth and people may like his talking, and again "but" does he know what he is talking about? OMG, one of my students reccomended this video...???

  • @contcauba it seems you are full of your self

  • @contcauba You are a mathematician and you don't know what an Algorithm is??? Based on the content of your comment I would have guessed that you are a freshman in high school who gets easily frustrated by simple algebra. Seriously??? Yes, he knows exactly what he's talking about. He's a physicist who works in financial mathematics, do you know what that is? Nevermind, I'm pretty sure everything I said went way over your head.

  • @contcauba I just read your comment, after typing my own. Mine echoed the very sentiment of your comment. If I had known I would have given you a thumbs up. Alas, I still am, but it amazes me how these people at TED (which is supposed to harbor some bright people) swallow this. How did this get past the monitors? Did they think he was Dr. Ian Malcolm? He obviously does. Did you catch the butterfly example?

  • Has anyone seen idoitcracy?

  • free market...ya, sure...its all manipulation.

  • It wasn't enough for Wall St. to destroy the global economy, now they want to destroy the planet earth too?

  • @sysunder Oh look, another guy that doesn't know what he is talking about.

  • Artificial island investment should begin to rise in the near future, I imagine.

  • Everytime I see TED I realize its a friggin joke and pretty-much worthless for anyone who has a real job. Its feel-good crap.

  • @brainlife What you don't realize that what once was this feel-good crap, gave you the job you have today and this feel-good crap you see right now gives your children & grandchildren a job. It's the future, what you don't see. And if the future is a worthless joke, then you should make a good one and kill yourself.

  • I'm 14 And i cna't really understand this... Teach Me please!

  • @yoyoyokiller "[algorithms] acquire the sensibility of truth". Meaning they create truth in a very subtle way. They are computers communicating with themselves, but they are performing real functions in reality with very little human supervision other than maintenance. And because they are allowed to function on their own they create their own rules, which are arbitrary and can lead to the downfall of entire markets. They can often do very impressive things, but when they operate on their own...

  • thumbs up if youre here for your computer science class

  • amazing amazing talk respect sir u r awesome

  • This is plain bullshit

  • This is plaind bullshit

  • awesome.

  • If Epagogix decided to create a genetic algorithm to make the ultimate movie script, I would watch the hell out of the resulting movie. Anyone else with me?

  • This man makes my argument for installing a basic 5-10 second "tick-tock" to the electronic trading markets to prevent that microarbitrage garbage that does nothing but suck money out of the market like a leech.

  • @goneutt Doesn't work. Reason being, the ability to suck money out of the market comes from being faster than everyone else. A market tick would reduce the frequency of that sort of thing, but those with less latency (and there /will/ be latency) can still react faster and thus have an advantage.

  • @VinuVonVin those with less latency (ping) would get their reaction registered at same time as others, so it would work.

This latency minimizing is BS, unproductive and should be outlawed. Joke: Space aliens make facepalm for humanity because of this silliness.

    maybe 100 second tick!

  • Algorithms may put us ahead of each other, but do they put us ahead

  • Algorithm analysis is amazing.

I've believed for a few years now that these human made algorithms are not us tearing the world apart for technology, but merely following through with said "manifest destiny", our trillions of tons of metal put towards moving data is just another form of life, an extension of ourselves, and the future of the planet.

    And it's fucking awesome

  • I feel good being a comp sci kid and understanding most of this :3

    Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey

  • Fighting algorithms! Black box trading. Arrrrr.

  • Thumbs up if you watched this before the iPad commercial

  • @monsoon300 I agree with others, you are not too smart for school. You can't spell so maybe you should stop whining and be a responsible child so you can hope to become a responsible adult that is capable of learning from professors like Mr. Slavin. You have no idea what you don't know.

  • 64 algorithms took offense to this.

  • Interesting, indoctrination into the world of 'profitable' non-production, how long can people profit from nonproducting system just shuffling digits around? Sounds like a cover story for incresing technocracy and electronic data/mind mindreading/mining insanity for a increasingly orwellian world. Yes study of data can revel facts, but predict the future of peoples chaotic actions, hogwash, just justifiying a police state mentality IMHO.

  • That 9% loss is easy to explain - alogrithms are just a part of the big picture. DTCC (the largest bank in the world that no one knows about) made the 22% loss on black monday in '87 as a 'stress test'.. go figure.

  • this is an interesting video!!

  • Isn't it sort of unbelievable that we're according to this, going to terraform the earth to make sure that some algorithms run as fast as possible, only to make more of something that doesn't exist? All that money that is being transfered and "created" is just an idea, a system we've developed to make the exchange of goods a less cumbersome affair. and now we're blowing up trenches to lay cable to make sure what is essentially cheating the fairness of that system? Ape's are weird creatures!

  • Maybe the only thing all that imaginary money being created represents is the force and ability to produce such dramatic alterations on the physical landscape in the 1st place. Money is the driver and technology is the vehicle right, but where's it going? Reshaping the world so that technology can do a better job at making more money which it will use to fuel even more technologies that will help it make even more money still, is pretty scary. Good one!

  • I clicked "like" on this video and Youtube's algorithm immediately recommended four other videos I may like.

  • I wish he could be more specific on some aspects. Like, what kinds of trading strategies are promoted by the shuffler and the knife and why do we care? I know this is complex but so is the world. A little more context could make this even more powerful.

  • intelligent inter-connections of algorithms (structured codes ) forming and connecting the world wide web, is serious maths. i salute mathematicians, scientists and intelligent minds alike. People tend 2 take things like technology for granted

  • @testman Because we have these programs running large parts of our society and they are beyond our understanding and control. Besides the obvious tomfoolery that common sense would tell you is going on, they could crash the market, crash the grid or do something unforeseen. We may all rue the day we made something the puny human brain could not possibly compete with.

  • @RippDrive Dude seriously... wtf? Did you actually watch the thing?

  • @hmspinaforethisisspa I'd take fluff over some busting math rocks any day.

  • @RippDrive Maybe you should go back to the annoying orange vids. It's obviously much more suited to you.

  • wtf did monsoon300 say? i can't find his comment!

  • @salahabuhijleh All monsoon300 did was respond in a relatively intelligent way to someone who said the video was boring. You can read his comment by clicking the "View All Comments" link at the bottom of the page and then using the Find function of your internet browser to search for "monsoon300".

  • @friarkhan Never even knew my browser had a find on page function. Now I do...will save me lots of time in the future. THANKS!

  • Congratulations TEDtalksDirector your channel was the theme of one of the articles at todaysfivecom, This was one of the top five videos, visit our channel for more information or visit our website to see the actual article.

  • amusing and interesting but pointless talk. yay.

  • i just saw this on google+ G+ Cliff Baldridge

  • nice vid. just shows how strange this stuff is getting...

  • Anyone see the film "Pi"? So, I guess that's a documentary now.

  • Did this talk scare the crap out of anyone besides me?

  • @MegaHigster.... Ummmm no?

Why would this "scare the crap" out of anyone?

  • is this guy jeff goldblum's brother?

  • ! Garbage !

  • Algorithms...the third evolutionary force **awed**

  • Who is Ted? And why is he in a rainforest cafe?

  • @JoeyWillNihalTrio Best comment ever!

  • Kevin Slavin is best.

  • I dont really have an interest in stuff like this but this video made me have an unusual appreciation for these type of things. Great video!

  • eggsellent

  • an excellent speaker

  • Its a pretty exciting future.

  • humans are outdated, the economy doesn't need them anymore.

  • He used that double-is a few times, like, "You see, 'the thing is' is that..." or, "When you get down to it 'the goal is' is that..."... some people don't notice they're saying a word needlessly twice twice.

  • poeple are nuts

  • Is someone setting up a codebreaking game in the comments with a bunch of spambots?

  • @roidroid homepage my visit!

  • @gabydewilde fuck no

  • i'm rather shocked to see so many people commenting that they don't understand what the video was about.

  • the sound of this guy's voice, is wonderful.

  • There is A BOMB in there!!! counting down !

  • I want to marry him. Seriously.

  • I would like to have Kevin continue his thought by discussing the relationship between "algorithms" and complexity theory.

For example: How can we think about algorithms searching for each other; or bumping into other unrelated algorithms in a way that causes a radical change to a new stable state of some cultural system?

  • saying algorithms are shaping our world is like saying guns kill people...

algorithms, computers, bombs, weapons, etc. all of these only inflict harm when they fall into the wrong hands.... I guess it is worth noting that it seems there are an ever increasing many ways to cause harm and do damage... Here we have math (algorithms), a modern weapon

  • Algorithms feel like the beginning of the entropic end of mankind.

  • So, what the hell is the Boston Shuffler and the Carnival?

  • @Skippan They are two different algorithms, mentioned earlier on the graphs in the presentation.

  • good to know

  • Wow this guy is great

  • so basicly... you found out that there is something to learn O_o good job

  • Damn u Scary Kevin Slavin

  • If all he wanted to say is that algorithms can physically shape our planet, because people are using them when acting in their economical interests (such as financial trading, natural resource consumption, etc), he could have said that straight in 23 seconds. Waste of the other 15 minutes of my time.

  • Once you start hearing the stubble on his face scratching the mic the entire time, it cannot be unheard.

  • i have no idea what he said

  • writing things we can no longer read... that was an awesome quote.

  • uhh im guessing they made those with computer software?

  • i didnt really understand shit

  • @licandres01 That good it only means there is the possibility of learning MORE than the people who do understand. Keep learning on till learning becomes fun and you will never grow old.

  • @rattytheraccoon well said friend

  • this guy is a total stoner

  • great talk!!!!

  • Something that shape our world, affects us all, whose complexity is beyond our comprehension. Sounds like the definition of a "god"...

  • @a575981735977018

Its funny because its man made, just like god.

  • @a575981735977018 "Singularity" can be a better word for it ;)

  • @roidroid Sure maybe "singularity" is a better word, I just read that mathematically singularity just means a discontinuity, which many could agree with. But I'm not sure that what the video talk about needs to be a discontinuity, maybe it's just simple exponential growth...

..hmm, the "god" definition I talked about translates to something like a power greater than ourselves that can control us, but that definition can apply to rich and powerful people aswell, so I don't know...

    cheers

  • @a575981735977018 i mean the Technological Singularity. It's prettymuch the God that we'll inevitably create.

  • @roidroid Radical man, radical.

  • If you need a good architect, you should get Ariadne. I hear she's the best.

  • Is this the spoiled kids club? Right..... I'll stand by the door...

  • Anyone else seem to get a "doom's" day message out of him when he was talking about the market and how it seemed like it was going to crash...?

  • cpp1, you are a knucklehead!

  • I've never listened to such a cocky bastard who speaks with such affectation. What an ass.

  • do you like oasis and cat power? /watch?v=cGeJNnyDAWA

  • All for nothing, when the market crashes...

  • Big ..... words...... arrggghh......

  • @GTAmerc Wait, what big words? Ok i'm a CS graduate, i should probably shut up.

  • @GTAmerc what big words? Seriously there was almost zero math talk, i think the biggest word was "algorithm". I mean come on man get onboard the IQ>90 train there's nothing to be afraid of!

  • @jesuspaid4u it scares you. doesn't it? Coming here ranting like a mad person won't change a thing, for the computer that your writing your msg on, is the thing you stand against and the thing that will propel us to the status of gods. Your god will be succeeded very soon. You have lost the battle, but you still need to comprehend that. Obey nature: adapt or become extinct. Your choice.

If god made us; then our destiny is to become like him. Farewell.

  • 11:20 to 11:25 you can see a guy pass out with his mouth agape.

  • Ok, I'll admit, I had to watch this twice before it started to sink in.

  • is he talking about teleportation?

  • @jetlorider no

  • i can take this big massive thing and turn even bigger

  • "is is"? XD

  • So what this guys is telling me that there was a mysterious force in the web that magically fines its way into other compaines and messes them up a little.... Got damit im confused.... Im 16 and im confused...

  • I DONT GET IT =D I wish I could lol, stock market is confusing

  • we are evolving into machines...skynet

  • I know a litlle about this stuff, im a bachelor and i have written projects on artificial intelligence. When he says that 70% of the stock market... what he means to say is 70% of the trades, not 70% of the value. So yeah, i called BS at 04:57 and left the video.

  • @nerrant01. Theory: "a supposition or a system of ideas intended to explain something, esp. one based on general principles independent of the thing to be explained" - Straight from the dictionary. If someone doesn't believe in something that is factual, it is there by a theory. So yes, your point is invalid. The Bible not only says the Earth is flat but it also says the Earth is about 6,000 years old (also proven false). As well as countless fairy tells and even a fucking talking snake.

  • how about when android(robots) mesh those unseen algorithms could it produce artificial life?

  • Why does he have such bad cotton mouth??

  • i don't buy this crap about low latency trading being useful because it provides liquidity to the markets. All it's doing is skimming the markets and extracting profits from the rest of us. Nothing is contributed. Imagine what those 2000 physicists could achieve outside Wall Street, for the benefit of us all.

  • @nerrant01. I know someone who doesn't believe in space. There's people out there that reject that we've even BEEN in space. So your point is invalid. I've done plenty of research on religion. There's nothing surrounding any religion with factual information. You referenced mankind's idiotic past with how they thought the Earth was flat. The Bible even says the Earth is flat. Coincidence? Religion was nothing but a way to explain things. Learn your shit before you talk it.

  • @DCjackass Don't bother. Religious people are better left behind in their ignorance. It's no use getting into youtube arguments with them.

  • "New songs... Drift, REsistance, Memories, In my childhood dream, Light and Shadow""

  • I pick up women with the use of algorithms. It fails every time. :(

  • FAKE AND GAY

  • also that book " the making of a fly costs up to 10,000 dollars on amazon"!

  • The static/crackling sound is the mic brushing up against his stubble. Didn't leave any space between the foam tip and his cheek :P

  • @nerrant01. Everything is a theory. GRAVITY is a theory, yet we all know it exists. We call them theorys because there's always people that are in disbelief or in denial saying it isn't true. And since when is any religion ever been factual? A theory is just an idea. Theories like gravity and evolution have tons of factual information backing the theory up. Religion, has none.

  • @DCjackass gravity is a thoery we assume it exists. we know there is something holding us down. but the theory is that the earth has energy pulling us down.

  • By "not always correct" I mean by human standards. Technically, it could be completely incorrect every time.

  • Hehe, nice video - but if he'd shaved right before he went on stage, maybe his facial hair wouldn't have brushed the mic so intensely :P

  • there is a weasel located in this video

  • What the FUCK is that ANNOYING sound in the video?

  • @ElPicos310

I think it's the microphone scraping against the guy's face.

  • if an algorithm tells you to jump off a cliff, do you jump off a cliff ? maybe not. but if it tells you to blow up a mountain...

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • I Like the Piano , I Thought he would arithmetically play something :(

  • I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT HES TALKING ABOUT

  • Epic news , always count of this channel for groundbreaking information Looking forward to more videos

    John

  • i wanted to watch this video becaese of the cover picture

  • in other word, the machine take over is eminent, and he just hinted at how the stock market is not natural but controlled.

  • Pretty Birds:)
