I read something about this group back in 1967 but I have never heard them before. Their name just came to mind and sure enough here they are. Thanks for posting this.
i can't get this g.d. song to play through. i was about 17 when i first heard of this group, and was the only one of my friends that were into them at first. i have 2 mint copies of this album. machines was the theme song of this house me and a bunch of hippies lived in around 1970
@degjr123 Uhhhh......no. Plenty of people had experimented w/MOOG's and theremins before Lothar. Ever heard of an album called Pet Sounds? Still, their futuristic new wavey sounds wouldn't come into vogue until the Talking Heads, Gary Numan, and DEVO, so props to them, all the same.
omg i cant believe someone posted this! my FIRST concert age 10 was this band! they just blew the main act (the Byrds) away LOL thanks for the memories :)
I have two of their albums, saw them many times at the Trauma in Philly. Funny no one in Colorado ever seems to have heard of them, always thought they were from Boulder?
Manfred Mann did an excellent version of this--any of the mentioned, form Blue Men to Kraftwerk to Les Claypool, could do a really excellent remake of it!:)
I'm captivated by that weird walking machine @ 0:38 - anyone know anything about that? I been all over "robots" and such on Youtube but never seen anything like that.
Thanks, I loved it! That's been rattling around my head for the last few months - never thought I'd hear it again. It's still a cool and relevant song - someone needs to do a remake.
agreat band from NY that played in Philly constantly...saw them many times. My friend Jim Allen in Brooklyn- who writes for Mojo and others- got hired to write the linear notes for a reissue to happen this year.
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
PLEASE check out my channel. I also have to use machines to breathe for me, and have disorders, but I DO NOT LET THEM GET ME DOWN, and pLEEASE do not feel sorry for me. Even though my disease is fatal, I don't complain.
Something very similar happened to me, Papawillie. I found a weed growing in my yard called the devil's trumpet, aka jimsom weed. I ate some and the next thing I knew, I didn't eat any at all but I was floating in a beautiful cloud high above Nicaragua. Jonathan Winters was there and he spoke to me just as rainbow, arched across the shimmering blue, speaks back to the sun that made it. Try it out, holmes. J.I.M.S.O.M. It may work a wonder.
@bjorsak Read the book A Yaqui Way of Indian Life, by Carlos Castadada. In the book they make a paste from the root and rub it on their forheads...pretty trippy.
Guys, I had 4 copies of the album, three still un-opened... I actually got loaded on Gypsum Weed the other night and smashed them into oblivion.... i then talked ot the ghost of my ancient ancestors for the next 9 days... it was sooooooooooooooooo fun...
I have gotten so many cool comments on this video. It's bringing out all the old guys like us that remember playing this way back when! Another favorite of mine was "Ars Longa Vita Brevis" by the Nice. Do you remember that one?
Of all the sixties synth bands, Lothar & the Hand People were the drunken rowdies at the science show. It's like the Holy Modal Rounders had invaded KlingKlang studios. Gotta love 'em!
This is classic stuff. I actually have this album and have been a fan of this group for years. "Lothar" is an electronic musical instrument that makes sounds by moving your hands around a standing rod. There is a photo of it on the back of the album. These guys were pioneers of the moog synthisizer which was just coming into use at the time (69/70). Wonder what happened to them? I enjoyed this clip, Thanx.

How advanced was this group for the time of this creation!
By the way I was a teenager and owned this "album" (I know it is an antiquated word lol). Terrific stuff and it STILL ROCKS!!

Do you recall the 1966 song "Mechanical Man" by Ben Bolt and the Nuts? It's another good robot song. I can't find it anywhere.

@6motion6 It's by Bent Bolt and The Nuts. Hope that helps

They were the first group to play electronic music - theremin - but never get recognition for that.

Yes, thank you - I found it! It was featured at Burning man, too. Some genius named Theo Jansen made it and a number of other things.
That song sure sticks with you, don't it? I've been hearing it in my sleep even. Now, I've listened to it about four times today. Arghhh... LOL

OK, so you think you know where it came from. It's actually a derivitive of a " Therim "
used in early sci - fi movies in the 50"s
