A slightly stumbling beginning but afterwards full of fire and panache, and as always she made the piano sing like no other... I loved her Chopin in particular but in Schumann she was also superb.
She was 74 and a bit past her prime, but despite the missed notes and over-pedaled passages, much of the old Novaes magic was still here--the resplendent colors, imagination, spontaneity, and grand style. The inclusion of "Sphinxes" was something new AFAIK, but the omission of "Paganini" may have been due to her tiring or feeling less up to its formidable demands. Even with this performance's shortcomings, I adore Novaes' playing of "Carnaval" above all others--she's my favorite pianist!
Guiomar was one of the greatest pianists of all, and she will be forever!!!
Wonderful Carnival!
