@lmnguy i am speaking for myself, i like when people also incorporate exotic scales and microtonal ideas in a western, especially jazz context. the possibilities are endless is all im saying man, its not some bash against anyone, just a push to further expand and create new sounds.
Yes, Johny, playing sitar is so simple that it is not even funny. Especially the bending part. i bet you can relate to that. You seem to know a thing or two about bending if catch my drift. Find yourself a sitar and touring. Let me know if you have hard time selling tickets. If you do, you can always make a living by bending wink wink .
As far as I know the best sitar maker is Hiren Roy in Garihat Road, Kolkata. Vilayet/Imrat and their entire clan get it from him. Sitar made out of burma teak (or at least a portion of it from this wood) is supposed to be the best though it takes a long time for the sitar to sound nice when constructed out of burma teak. trust this helps.
His Sitar name tag says Yousuf Mirajkar. But its not made by him. It was made by BM Sitar maker in Miraj. However now he gets from most makers there. But the main one is from BM.
Shahid Parvez is playing Raga Charu-Keshi here. He is displaying a particularly unique interpretation of it as he usually does. Since Charu-Keshi is an adaptation from the south, Norther musicians interpret them in their own way. His gat using the muk ni dha, RE GA is interesting for this raga.
I medicate with the herb to Indian Classical music too... both expand my mind and take me away from the pain of arthritis, I just wish this piece was a lot longer, about 1/2 hour or more. Very Beautiful and restorative.
Ravi Shankar was the man to make Indian Classical popular in the west, but there are so many sitar players much better than him, and Shahidji is by far amongst the best.
How does he pull the string so far without it breaking? At 1:27 he pulls from shuddha re to komal dha and I have seen another video of him when he pulls from shuddha re to komal ni. Any info/comments are much appreciated.
i would say because of the fret curvature-/or wideness of the neck-my sitar is not a gayaki but it does meed about 6-7notes ( because i had it custom w/ very thick high frets &wider neck) and i think when you do a very far meend you always keep 2 fingers- you never do a long meed without both fingers-(i learned it the hard way lol) it doesnt add direct pressure to one point, but at 2 points which make it more flexible.
most every good sitar you can pull at least 5 notes (sa to pa for example)from every fret above the low pa on the ma string. sometimes you can pull 6 (pa to komal dha). on the karaj string, if you have one, you can pull from re to sa. the string wont break.
I am not talking about performance. My comments are only for the madhya laya bandish. It is different than normal imdad khan style bandishes ( masitkhani or razakkhani). Shahidji's performance is always imdadkhani style.

Ustadji and players of his ilk don't use store bought sitars. His sitar is crafted to his specifications by a master craftsman.

Its not just bending in the western music sense; there are shrutis aka microtones that are used specific to a raga .
