yes ....it is a delta blues song and the original....has several variations...true story compiled from disasters not unlike the flood in Louisiana 1927.....but I do like Led's best!!!!!!
I like the alternate take. Sometimes songs sound better with a higher pitch. It's still got the D minor feel to it (or F major, judging by the fact that Jimmy and Paul are playing an F more often than not), but it just sounds better.
Missed the concert in Buffalo,NY when Robert Plants son died and they cancelled the remaining concert dates. My all time favorite group and that goes along way considering all the great groups of the 60' and early 70's.
how can this song be about katrina if it was first recorded 80 years ago? 76 years before hurricane katrina. it's about the mississippi flood in 1927. i don't know where everyone's getting new orleans or hurricane katrina from. the lyrics don't even mention new orleans, and they definitely don't mention hurricane katrina.
The last 7 minutes, i closed my eyes, i laid back and i just simply enjoyed this song. My mind was gone, i was thinking of nothing else besides this great song. Like i went in a sort of trance. Something only Led Zeppelin could achieve.
Let us just pray that one day, there'll be a new, fresh group who brings us the same emotions as Led Zep did.

...."intended for New Orleans"? Yeah Zep is so badass that they made a time machine just so they could travel to the futeure to write a song about an otherwise unforeseen deluge. The real question is why didn't they warn us?
I didnt mean it was intended for the New Orleans Hurricane! If I meant that I would have mentioned something about Katrina! What I meant was that they intended the song to have a New Orleans-ish sound! YOU should read ALL the comments before talking because mine was in response to someone else's experience of the song! This is the real rock & roll, my favorite Led Zeppelin rock song of all & won't get tired of playing over & over again I think .this one is even the best version on my own opinion. Real classic rock!!!!!!!!!
Yes, the song is intended for New Orleans, but the beauty of music is that it can take the Listener anywhere as he or she interprets it. It's also the soundtrack to our lives so, if the song reminds someone of a particular event, so be it.
this is indeed a classic zepplin great its got that meniacal hook that pulls you in although the vocals are flawless this song doesn,t really need them. no offense to the great robert plant of course. heres a wierd question do you suppose that when hurricane katrina hit there was some old hippie hangin out on his roof playing this very song. question was not intended to offend anyone affected by the disaster long live led zepplin
One of my all time Zep favorites, anyway it is played, or heard, thanks. It reminds me of a story a teacher told us about a flood in Ms, and how they all had to climb on the roof to be saved, way back in the 1930s.

there's a bootleg record out there saying "alternate studio takes" or something like that. There's songs on it like 'Jennings Farm Blues' (which has been changed to an acoustic version and finally has been pressed as 'Brom-Yr- Aur Stomp'), an alternate Solo on 'Fool In The Rain' and tons of other material. Check it out, it's out there on YouTube for sure. I think Conneyfogle posted them up, not absolutely sure now tho.

This kicks some serious ass. One of my favorite songs of all time, I love the alt version. Nothing, but nothing, that is or ever was comes close to Led Zep.
what an incredible drum fill at 5:14. despite the tiny bit of crossed sticks, one of the finest rock fills ever heard! (not used in the final take of this song.)
the song is by Memphis Minnie, not Zeppelin. great cover version, however. the song is about BOTH pent up sexual desire AND black sharecroppers wiped out when the levee broke forcing the sharecroppers, some of them to, "go to chicago.'
too many hung up on lyrics... they are apt but not essential... need to be the young beast and allow the drums and bass lines drive you... we would smoke a bit, than when this song started we amped up... our chests expanded, our nostrils flared and we hungered and and hunted ... the levee is methaphor for that pent up sexual desire....going on 40 years ago and this song still stokes the fires...... thats the way I felt it anyway....
Zeppelin kicks ass my fav songs from zeppelin imaggration song when the levee breacks stairway to heaven and dazed and confused all bad ass LONG LIVE ZEPPELIN
thank god for Led Zeppelin.... Beatles ruled 63-70 till they came.... They're ok but light...Stones were good Blues with an edge... than Brian died and we were left with Mick prancing around stage... LZ hit a primal note.... instead of being 13-14 we were now 18-19 ... power passion, DRIVING DRUMS and lots of younger chicks... GOD those were the days the happy days for predator 18-19 yo's males.....we weren't PC just free...
Yes. Nowadays kids spend their time inside with games n' such. We don't go anywhere, we're not as active and influenced by good music as you were back then. Our resort? Youtube via technology. It seems that as time progressed technology took music's place. What a horrible trade off.
But anyway dude, you're story has passion. I wish we have what you had back then. You were a lucky guy to live through those times.
You've got it backwards. Technology, the internet, and (sometimes) even YouTube allows kids now to find and appreciate good music. Actually, I'd go as far as saying the internet has brought on a surge of appreciation of music for teenagers.
that may be true for the slight number of people that listen to the right music.
but for all the idiots that listen to crap, its bad. very bad. this technology is throwing the bad music into peoples faces. its hard to get away from it.
Pretty sure this song was a cover of an old blues song. The only thing thats similar though, is the lyrics. Zeppelin made this song into their own. And it fucking rocks.
amazing led zeppelin song i can play this on drums i play it like 5 hours a day its so crazy good! LED ZEPPELIN FOREVER! i agree music today sucks too bad we zeppelin fans lost the best drummer ever john bonham damn these guys would still be amazing and you know it!
hey HAZMATCOM1 stop posting comments on youtube you make these comparisons on too many vids. Its not a rap vs. rock thing both genres suck today and both were great in the past. Its about quality vs. shit.
Plus Rap's not all bad, nd i bet a lot of older musician's would agree with me on that. I mean, most of these new breed of so called "R&B artists" (please) and Hip Hop artists make me wanna cut off my ears, but some 90s and 80s rap is good. I find that for rap, and a lot of things, people don't hate it, they just hate what it's become. Music doesn't even mean anything anymore. If it has a hook with some tard singing into a vocorder, it's a hit. Heck I like Classic Rock, Grunge, Blues and Rap so
dude everyone knows that led zeppelin was the first ever metal band!!! They were voted the heaviest band in history by Rolling Stone! Dude have you even heard Immigrant Song or Whole Lotta Love? That's more metal than any Gorgoroth crap I've ever heard! But Zeppelin's also Blues, Psychedelic, a lot of things, which is what makes them so great!
man, it is a given led zeppelin is the greatest rock band ever. but im not sure their the first ever metal band, a lot of people will say that it is Cream who started metal... it's always debatable though
They would be ashamed to hear you say they started Heavy metal. Jimmy Page freaked at a reporter once when he was asked about being Heavy Metal and he said "We're much more complex than that smashing of power-chords like Mountain called Heavy Metal" or something to that effect.
Awesome! If they had just left the in the lyric "ya know ya gonna die." (2:56) it would have been the heaviest/darkest song ever recorded in the history of rock.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You say Jonas Brothers I say Led Zeppelin
You say Lil Wayne I say Page
You say Hannah Montana I say Iron Maiden
You laugh at me because im different I laugh at you because your all the same
You say rap I say MEAT(A)L!!!
i love metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!
92% of American teens have gone over to the rap/hip hop side of music. If your one of the 8% that's still headbangin' and disturbing the peace, copy and paste!
i kno where your coming from how rap sucks and yes led zeppelin is a metal band but nothing like Iron maidan also they hated being called a heavy metal band this song is 100% blues
anyone can use when the levee breaks its like in the national archive or what eve like that camp town racers sing this song, song. didnt steal just Used the lyrics.
I prefer the other version but if only this version had been released it would still be close to my #1 Led zep song. Bonham's drumming is just fantastic!
Nice version! Sounds like the boys are experimenting a bit with different sounds and textures - classic Zeppelin light vs. heavy stuff. Robert really sounds like he's trying to find his own sound for the song. You can hear him moving in and out of Kansas Joe McCoy (the original recording) and Robert Plant tones and melodies throughout - check out the Kansas Joe version when you get a chance.
In any case, this seems to be a masterpiece going through the growing in progress. Real artists at work!
Check out When the levee breaks by Zepperalla.

Dancolehawk 2 years ago
man, it is a given led zeppelin is the greatest rock band ever. but im not sure their the first ever metal band, a lot of people will say that it is Cream who started metal... it's always debatable though
zep123dmc 2 years ago
or sabbath- i dont think this debate would ever die. because people will argure metal/rock/hard rock.
johnmonica 2 years ago
They would be ashamed to hear you say they started Heavy metal. Jimmy Page freaked at a reporter once when he was asked about being Heavy Metal and he said "We're much more complex than that smashing of power-chords like Mountain called Heavy Metal" or something to that effect.
xKinseh 2 years ago
Awesome! If they had just left the in the lyric "ya know ya gonna die." (2:56) it would have been the heaviest/darkest song ever recorded in the history of rock.

92% of American teens have gone over to the rap/hip hop side of music. If your one of the 8% that's still headbangin' and disturbing the peace, copy and paste!
RAP=retards attempting poetry

Wiki is sadly at the mercy of us all. Levee Drums were recorded through a firepalce, and down the Hall from Laird Bonham. Period.

I'm thinking of letting my band listen to this. WE've always wanted to play When the Levee Breaks, but none of us can play harmonica
The0d0r1c 3 years ago
just get a harp in the same key, practice for about 3 days, you'll get something useable.

The drums in this song are fantastic. I love them.
TheGematria 3 years ago 3
No one can really blame Zep for stealing the original WTLB lyrics because in a way those werent the actual lyrics they used to begin with.
scarfacedan09 3 years ago
anyone can use when the levee breaks its like in the national archive or what eve like that camp town racers sing this song, song. didnt steal just Used the lyrics.

i definately have to say tha tplants harmonica skills were underrated as a part of the band. great stuff
spearchucker37 3 years ago 4
you can tell this is before they slowed the track down......
Queenfan778 3 years ago 2
Yeah, mainly because of the vocals.
TheEssence12 3 years ago
sounds faster allright....the whole take is slowed down on the original???....i guess the vocals are realtime?
zealberg 3 years ago 3
well wikipedia says it was played at faster speed and about a half step higher, and then during mixing it was slowed down,
Queenfan778 3 years ago
I prefer the other version but if only this version had been released it would still be close to my #1 Led zep song. Bonham's drumming is just fantastic!
chrisb1953 3 years ago 2
Anyone know how page does that last little riff?

I love this version. This seems kind of slick to my ears. Good, but slick. I like both versions. I would pay top dollars for this version.
