@1HiMimi --- Actually, Christian Thielemann is a very rare bird. He's very sensitive to the singers he conducts ... and he doesn't compromise his musicianship.
Thanks for posting this. I had never heard of or heard this tenor before and if not for Wunderlich, this would be my favorite recording of this great song. Looking at the comments, it's always amazing to me what people hear when they listen to singers/recordings. ingolato e brutto? I think not. Not every singer has an Italianate sound, nor would it be appropriate in all songs. I love Pavarotti, but not singing this song. All singers have flaws. Look at Domingo's tongue.
Has that whiney ping at the top of the voice folk associate with tenor singing post-Pavarotti. Villazon's an edgier, more brooding instrument. Both vail in their way, though this sound always makes me think of breadsticks in an Italian restaurant!
I heard him a few weeks ago in La Boheme at the Met. I waited for nearly 6 hours on line to get discount tickets because I wanted to see him specifically, and I was not disappointed. His voice did seem a little small at first, but overall he sounded great. He got very enthusiastic applause, and it was well deserved. He's young, so hopefully we will be able to enjoy him for many years to come. I plan to see him next season in Romeo et Juliette, and he is scheduled for a few Bohemes as well.
well, he DOES replace villazon... I heard rumors he now sings all bohemes which were planned with netrebko/villazon (promotion tour after the movie...)
@reynaldo7899 Villazon doesn't seem to care what happens to his voice, even though he has had to take time off to rest his damaged vocal cords. Back in 2002 before anyone knew who Villazon was I heard him in Gianni Schicchi as the young boy Lauretta is in love with. He was wonderful back then. I wish he had taken better care of his voice.
@reynaldo7899 No, please don't let him repace Villazon. Let him do his own repertoire he is capable of. That is what has made him improve his qualities to date.
@reynaldo7899 I think he's far better than Villazon, too. I heard Beczala live in San Diego this past season. It isn't a big voice, but it is so pure and lovely. To be fair, Villazon sounded very good when I first heard him live in Los Angeles in 2002, but he hasn't been careful of his voice since then and it shows. It's a shame, he could have been a wonderful tenor.
This tenor is singing this song excellent. Do not take it as an excuse to downgrade Villazón. He is a great singer and a healthy element of the opera culture.
It would be nicer if we all write about what we do like and as far as possible tries to avoid
@reynaldo7899 That's gonna be hard because Villazon is the most marketed Tenor around. He's not the best by any stretch, but there's a powerful marketing machine behind him. I think Beczala and and Joseph Calleja are better, but neither one is well marketed.
@reynaldo7899 Agreed. Villazon seems hell bent on ruining his voice. I first heard Villazon live in Gianni Schicchi in 2002, and thought he was marvelous. Sadly, he has misused his voice since then and has damaged it badly. Beczala, however, always sings with beautiful technique, lovely vocal tone, and elegance.
He is certainly in the tradition of these great artists: Wunderlich, Gedda, Bjoerling but he is also very much his own person. What a joy to listen to.
With regards to size, Wunderlich never had much chance he died at 35 so he never made his prime, Beczala will and it sounds very fine right now, Bravo.
I am not surprised he sang at the tucker gala recently and was very well received, will be shown on PBS TV soon. This was not at the met or in a big house like Chicago but friends tell me he was outstanding Most lyric tenors get larger with age like Gedda and Neil Shicoff. I heard Neil in 1979 in house Chicago, Boheme and again in 5 different opera's in the same house (and others) over 26 years and by the late 80's his voice had become quite large he never pushed it and it lasted, thanks
I agree, Beczala has grown in the past 5 years and if he goes on with his clever career planning and his non-pushing he will definitively grow and grow the upcoming years...
I know he has been at the met for two years but why not before? His reviews I am told where not raves but judged from you tube and several arias they should be if he sounds like this, Bravo!
I can imagine why Mister Beczala has waited quite a while before going to the Met. I think his carreer planning is very clever. I heard him 5 years ago in Boheme, he then had an even lighter lyrical voice. Since then his voice has really grown. He sang an astonishing Werther in Munich this year. Still it is not a very big voice. I think therefore it is very clever for him to wait a while before going to the big big theaters. First building up the right repertoire in a bit smaller theaters...
THE GREATEST TENOR VOICE SINCE NEIL SHICOFF IN THE 80's this is a voice in the tradition of wunderlich and he sings as though it was studio here, so perfect.

Indeed, I agree with puddingwithcookies (great name), Wunderlich came immediately to my mind when I heard his first notes. Bravo, tenore! We need more like you!
wie ein Fritz Wunderlich. Elastische Stimme mit weichem Timbre und Höhe, und vor allem viel Sprachgefühl für das Deutsch. Schön, daß ein polnischer Tenor dies realisiert.
