OMG i took a lesson with John Stowell yesterday.. It was amazing! I have to say this man has open a whole new world of possibilities on my playing. He has definitely taken me out of the box
First came across John Stowell in the '89 GP issue "Unknown Greats!" Sure glad I looked into his videos tonite-I hear some of the musical values of Jim Hall and Lenny Breau-wonderful playing and concept.
@bedacoals I went to one of his seminars in Oswego like three years ago. Mike Stern and Gene Bertoncini also had seminars. SAdly no concert then by Mr. Stowell, but Mike played and was amazing. All also very nice down to earth guys BTW. Criminal that a talent as large as Stowell isn't a household name. Musicians in the know know this already though.
I think Manolian's reaction is something John is probably used to. I appreciate the very respectful why he put it. I know and love John Stowell both as a player and a person. He has changed my life in fact. Bluemonk82 is right. I think it just takes some of us a little longer to appreciate this man's awesome talent and originality. So hang in there and keep listening to him. As they say, I'm sure glad he was born!
Thanks for watching and for your kind words. I do get to the Midwest sometimes. Hope to meet you if I'm playing in Cincinnati. Trust that you're doing well.
I love your playing. What I dig about you is that you're a harmonically driven player and this makes your playing so much more interesting. You're not a single-note guy. I mean it's obvious that you play them, but you have such a great harmonic vocabulary that makes your playing fresh and really helps round out a group of musicians.
Just remember that when you have John in your band you don't need a pianist!
I am a guitar player from Toronto and when I saw you play you reminded me of a good friend of mine Lorne Lofsky. He is very influenced by Bill Evans and his pianistic approach to guitar is very much similar to the manner in which you play. Your playing John is very beautiful and passionate. You guys should do an album together -- wow!
You are a wonderful player matched by a wonderful personality.
Thanks for watching and for your kind words. I think Lorne is a great guitarist. I'd be happy to play with him in the future.
I'll be at the Montreal Festival playing solo on July 2 and at MIAC in Toronto in late August. I also have a gig in Toronto with Don Thompson at Chalkers on August 24. Hope to meet you when I'm in town if you're free. Trust that you're well. Let's stay in touch.
I love the blues but how does the four note blues solo video come up as a suggestion on a John Stowell page?....just sayin'.

I do not hear tension and release in Mr Stowell's solos, which in turn makes for boring listening, but great technique and complex musicality though.

I can only say open your ears, because it's very apparent that you're missing something.
