Ugh, if Borel wouldn't have dumped him for RA he would have caught her, and he still did a Win-Place-Show in the Triple Crown. I don't hate RA but I hate her connections and my heart will always be with a closer. They work so hard and if they don't get the right trip they won't win. Who dumps the Derby winner in favor of a rabbit stuck in the race to spoil the odds of a Triple Crown? It's just bad sportsmanship...but considering her owners it's not even a surprise.

@ealaman62 Well RA excels at this distance wire to wire more or less. MTB was a longer distance horse, but there were also some trip issues for him here. However RA was absolutely phenom in this race, she won it fair and clear!

If the race had been longer, the early pace would have been slower and RA would have had more left in the tank to hold off MTB, she would have won by a larger margin. MTB really proved himself in this race, the Derby was not a fluke, he was and is a solid runner. He can sustain a long long move.

I'm sure Mike Smith did everything he could to get MTB there first but everyone was on the rail so there was no other option but to go to the outside. To me it looks like he rode him like Zenyatta which is good! He just didn't have enough closing power,dont get me wrong I love Rachel But if there was some room on the rail MTB would have had it.

RACHEL ALEXANDRA would have absolutely no trouble whatsoever handing a 1 1/2 race. Am I the only one who see's that MTB was outgalloped by her after they hit the wire and she got alongside him....MTB would have an even more difficult time catching her with more ground because he would be more exhausted from the longer distance...MTB WILL NOT WIN THE BELMONT...

"After" they hit the wire? Of what relevance is that? The jockeys are pulling them up after the wire. Look at the dozen or so lengths MTB made up on her down the stretch despite having to weave through traffic to get there... that is a better barometer. The Belmont is over 1/4 mi. longer than the Preakness. MTB needed only 50 more feet to pass her.

Her own camp doesn't even think she'd have a chance at the Belmont, obviously, or they would have entered her. That speaks volumes.

Actually the galloping after the wire is relevant my friend...Also there is no reason whatsoever to enter her in The Belmont because #1 She is not going for the Triple Crown, #2 She has already raced two monster races recently, #3 Unlike MINE THAT BIRD who is a gelding and cannot garner any money as a stallion, RACHEL is a valuable commodity who needs to be preserved and not run into the ground...MTB will be run into the ground because he has no value after he's done racing....

rachel is not a 1.5m horse thats why she is not running. She struggled to win the shortest one and MTB came charging with full speed.

This was a very well run race! Mine That Bird is a very nice athlete, as well as Rachel Alexandra, but I agree with some of the other comments. She might have difficulty in the 1 1/2 mile race. They make a very intresting race still..and I'm very glad for the jockey! Seems like such a loving spirited type of guy! (:

I am IN love with MTB. If you could use time elapse photography, I bet all four feet are in the air more often than any are touching the ground. HE FLEW! I hope they do not run Rachel in the Belmont. For whatever reason, she WAS struggling. The thought of RA and Curlins offspring gives me chills. I hope they do not risk her as this is an opportunity for ALL. In the meantime, I am upset with the lack of coverage on MTB's run. THIS scrappy lil Bird deserves HIS due. BTW, 2009: The Year of Borel

Mine That Bird is so exciting to watch! He just blows past the others like they were standing still. Always in dead last, and boom, kicks in the turbo and bye-bye horsey.

If he didn't have to swing wide to get through, Rachel wouldn't have won. Bad luck for Mine That Bird let Rachel win.

Can't fault Smith on the ride. The rail move isn't there every race. Rachel was the better horse, to run those fractions as wide as she was and still have enough to last to the wire makes her the better horse.

Two Times Mine That Bird came from the southern tip of South America(the back of the pack). One time he was successful, the second time oh so close. WOW. To see that horse move, I can not describe it. WOW WOW WOW!!! Play him back in slow motion in both races.

I simple love watching him at the top of the stretch. I think he will take the belmont. Rachel Alexandra is too much of a front runner to lead a race for 1 1/2 miles. I see Mine That Bird taking the belmont by at least 5 lengths.

I disagree that 1 1/2 miles would be too long for RA. She struggled on this track for the last 1/4 because they had laid the dirt so deep in anticipation of rain. She likes a hard track and it was too soft...wore her out at the last. I think the Belmont will depend on the conditions of the track. She won't like it soft but Mine That Bird won't have a problem at all. He'll take it if the track is soft. He would have taken this one if Mike Smith could have found a hole.

What a run! What a filly! Congrats to Rachel Alexandra, winning the Preakness against the boys is no small feat and should be praised. I won't be disappointed if she doesn't run in the Belmont, if the trainer thinks her health would be jeopardized then no need to risk it. She's proven that she can run with (and beat) the best, so if she skips the Stakes I'm okay with that.

Did you see how Mine That Bird ran past the rest of the field like they were standing still, from last place....again? No credit taken away from the filley but Mine That Bird is FOR REAL. Just wish the jockey would have let him open up just a few seconds earlier. We could possibly be going for a Triple Crown race in Belmont. Either way, the Belmont is going to be a great two-horse face off.

I think that if her connections are smart they will pass on the Belmont. If they do run in that race I will be there to bet everything against her. I know she will not get the distance.

There's no need to run her in the Belmont, she beat the boys and has nothing to prove. She'd be better off running in the Acorn. Why risk getting her hurt in the Belmont. Besides they have to be looking at the bigger picture - a face off with Zenyatta in Ladies Classic. I doubt they'll send her to the Stakes.

The distance is irrelevant - its a risk issue. There's no reason for her to run against colts again. She'll probably run the Acorn, one prep race after that and on to Santa Anita and Zenyatta. If we're lucky we'll see her run as a mare.

The distance in this case is totally relevant. Any horse that's just ran a wire to wire job going 1 3/16 miles and labors towards the end will be risking injury trying to stretch out to 1 1/2 miles on just 3 weeks rest. After todays run RA needs a few months off she has nothing left for the Belmont.

I was looking at the situation as though they were considering running in the Belmont. In that case the distance would be completely relevant. It would be suicide to run RA 1 1/2 miles with 3 weeks rest after that grueling wire to wire run today, whether she ran against colts, filly's or mules.

Only 22 fillies have run the Belmont in 140 years and only 3 have won. Also, there has never been a filly who won 2 legs of the Triple Crown series so the odds would be greatly stacked against her. Overall, its just not worth it.
