so what kind of iodine can i use? I just see the antiseptic one in stores. the 2 percent iodine ones. Is any iodine ok to use for this purpose? I see the ones were its says call doctor if swallowed.
@eyecantcu2 People with thyroid problems need Iodine actually all of us need about 150mcg 244 would be ideal you would need 20 times that to show any problems at all. most people get between 50 and 75 mcg of iodine a day .
If you hold the opening downstream, you will get less crap in the bottle.
Povidone is also great for disinfecting wounds and all kinds of infections, ulcers, etc.
And another thing: in case of a nuclear event, the iodine intake will prevent your body from absorbing radioactive iodine-131 (a uranium and plutonium fission product) that may be in the environment and would accumulate in your thyroid gland and give you thyroid cancer.
Good video, well thought out. just a short note. Iodine should not be used by persons with an allergy to iodine, persons with active thyroid disease, persons taking medication that racts to iodine or pregnant women. Iodine also reacts to the starch in foods turning it blue. (It's a little weird eating blue oatmeal!) it won't hurt you, but it looks unappitising.
Hi, I like your videos you always have a lot of useful info. I have a question for you. How long could/can a person use iodine for water purification before it became harmful to your body or would it harm you?
I had a complete failure of 2 water filters, this weekend (labor day) i wish I had some iodine, I hate having to boil water in an already hot environment. In order to cool your body down you need to drink something cold, same if you in a cold environment, if you need to warm one of the best things to do is to warm the body's core or cool the body's core. Putting boiled water in a lake, creek, river is the best way to cool it.
I looked at some liquid iodine in CVS pharamcy, but all of them say "external use only" on the bottle. Is this the type you have? If not, where did you purchase your iodine?
Umm, can I use 5% iodine solution? Isn't that too strong or something? Instructions say you can't intake it by any means. If it can be used, I'll need a lot less drops proportionaly (my bet is 2-3 drops per liter).
Good idea allowing some of the Iodine/water mixture to seep through the cap onto the threading. That is one of the things that makes me a little iffy about treating water with my UV light pen. Once the light is off the treatment stops, making it impossible to treat the cap and the threads.
@conleytgn Really important point you raise here. You can get round the the UV pen thing by having a small funnel to carefully insert into bottle so when pouring water in - it only makes contact with the inside of bottle. I appreciate it's another little possibles item to have on your person but worth considering when utilising the pen.
After drinking what I thought was pure mountain water once I will never assume anything again :) I was sick for 3 days in the middle of a 5 day trip. Lesson learned!

A liter is bigger than a quart. Why do you put 3 drops in a liter and 4 in a quart?

Iodine should be added to are tap water then.
omega4chimp 1 year ago
@omega4chimp Tap water actually isnt as bad for you as bottled water. So there is no need to add it to the tap.

@outdoorguy1215
You can taste it a little.
After a few days of using it, your throat will get a little soar and you'll want to take a break from it for a day.
