People, get over it. Its Christmas, that's what it is. This "happy holidays" crap belongs in the same bin as civil "naming ceremonies" instead of Christenings. Its a stupid invention for non-believers that are too stubborn to to recognise it for what it is, & yet insecure enough to feel the need for their own special greeting.

And what's with being offended? It's like an athiest sneezing & then cracking it when someone says "God bless you". Maybe the recipient should be the one to adapt.

it's easy for someone of a christian background to ask why people get offended.

Think of it this way. Every year without fail every public place has Christmas decorations. Christmas music plays on the radio non-stop and everywhere you turn it's all Christmas. People ask you what you're doing for Christmas and you feel really awkward.

So imagine being a kid growing up where every winter you feel awkward and left out for the entire Christmas season.

Thats why it upsets people. Just say holidays.

When they commercialized christmas, I had nothing to do with it, but I get riled when Hanukkah gets commercialized the same way as Christmas gets commercialized. In the way, its about marketing, gift giving and having a huge tree with all the trimmings and less is being said for the origins of Christmas. Now we live in a world when competition for dominance is all becoming apparent. Hanukkah is not about giving gift. It is about celebrating the win by the Maccabees and the miracle that happened.

The only people who get offended by any form of well-wishing at all are the people who simple WANT to be offended. They want to be higher than others, so they get "offended" and beat the other person down in whatever way they can. As such, my policy is to go by spur of the moment, whatever I want to say at that particular time. If they're going to get offended, then I can't really stop that, can I?

I never really experienced this problem, because the polish equivalent of Merry "Christmas"/"Happy Holidays" simply means "happy holidays" :)

but about "taking Christ out of the holidays" - is Christ really still anywhere in Christmas? in the day of total commercialisation of almost ANY holiday you coul think of? I think Christmas "suffered" the most and it's not just the XX century - the christmas tree for example is a PAGAN TRADITION!

I actually don't say Merry Christmas until its actually christmas, or night before I'll say merry christmas. Maybe about the beginning of December till the week of Christmas, I'll say happy holidays. No reason really.
